24. Inaugural Speech as World CARP Leader

Hyun Jin Moon
March 31, 2000

This is from the address given on March 31, 2000, at the inauguration of the President of World CARP.

Before I begin I want to thank all of you for coming out here today and attending this inauguration. I hope that from this day forward, in the spirit of the new age that has come upon us with the victorious foundation of our True Parents, something great can be accomplished, something that our whole movement can see and be proud of.

I know those are ambitious words coming from somebody who is newly appointed to a student organization, CARP. If you give me the time I think you will start to see that although CARP is just a student organization, it can have a great impact. CARP can go beyond just dealing with second generation issues and concerns, can go beyond reviving our young members, can go beyond bringing new members to the CARP movement It can touch all the youth of our country.

If you give me the time, I will touch upon this. But being Father’s son, I have my own way of getting there. Sometimes the road might be straight and sometimes the road might be winding. It all depends. But as I stand before you and look at the crowd, I think, what is appropriate for me to speak about today? Should I stand here and dryly outline the vision of World CARP, and what the emphasis or focus of World CARP is? Or should I try to touch upon a broader vision that doesn’t only involve World CARP, but affects each and every one of us, irregardless of what we do, as members of the Unification Church?

If the foundation that Parents have built throughout the course of 50-plus years of ministry, it has been a tremendous victory, from whichever angle you look upon it. Yet was it originally necessary for Parents to walk that course, struggling to build a movement so that Father could rise to the national and worldwide levels to complete his work? I’ve heard Father say many times that this was not the true purpose of his course, that the foundation of Christianity was a foundation built for him to substantiate the mission given to him by God.

If you look at 1945, the foundation was there. The world was basically under the power and influence of the United States, which then stood as the sole superpower in the world. In 1945 the Soviet Union was not yet a superpower. The only country relatively unaffected by the tragedy of war was the United States. Her soil was unstained with the blood of its own young people. Its economy was flourishing because it supported the allied cause. Its influence in the world, both economically and spiritually, was greater than ever before. This was the foundation prepared for True Father was to inherit. Had Father’s mission begun in 1945 with the support of the worldwide Christian movement, Father has said that within seven years time the foundation for the building of the Kingdom of Heaven would be established.

Now reflect back. Even without that foundation, how much have we accomplished as a handful of members? We are a handful because even though our numbers might be in the thousands, compared to the rest of the world with its population in the billions, we are a small, small percentage. We are small in number because we do not have control over a nation. Father does not have a nation.

Think again of how much more could have been accomplished if the Christian foundation that was prepared had united with True Parents. Yet unfortunately Christianity, failed to unite with True Parents, starting with the Korean Christians, who still today are the greatest opponents of our movement.

It is hard to overestimate the significance of this sad fact. Christianity came to Korea in a big way. The 19th Century revival movement that had started in the United States was manifested in its purest form in Korea. If you study about the Pyongyang revivals in North Korea, it attests to this fact. The American missionaries who went to Korea testified to the fact that Koreans were prepared to receive Christianity, more so than the Chinese, more so than the Japanese. Of all the Asian nations that Christianity touched, Korea was the most prepared. If you look at the history of Korea, you can see that Korea was a nation founded upon its religious heritage. Even the Tang gun myth, attests to Korean belief that the nation was a product of divine will. There is an intense connection with a supreme being, Hananim, and this was something present within Korea even before the coming of Christianity.

It was in this vortex of spiritual energy that Christianity came, and it was in this environment that Christianity established its purest form. There was a strong apocalyptic nature about Korean Christianity, a strong belief that the Lord of the Second Advent would come to Korea, especially among the more spiritual or revelatory Christian denominations. It was this foundation that was built for True Father to come. Yet this faith, this foundation, although prepared, although cultivated by the divine hand of God, was lost because of the failure of man’s five percent responsibility. Those who were prepared to receive the Messiah were the first ones to reject him. They could not see the vision, could not unite with the vision that True Parents were bringing to Korea at that time.

Don’t you think it’s ironic that the only nation that has not found a solution to the ideological conflicts of communism and the free world is on that small peninsula? The Cold War is over in the rest of the world, yet it’s not over on the Korean peninsula. Why? Because it was there that the vortex of change, the spiritual mission that Father was supposed to manifest in his life began, and still remains.

Now why do I make this point? It was because of the failure of Christianity to unite with Father that Father had to walk the course of the wilderness. We now stand as Unification Church members with a second generation, and even a third generation, and we’ve institutionalized ourselves and we look at ourselves as an entity that was meant to be. But the fact of the matter is, it was never meant to be. The reason why our Church is in existence is because of the failure of the prepared foundation to receive True Parents.

God’s providence has a distinct purpose and a distinct course. It is our five percent responsibility to connect with it. It is not a democratic process. It is not simply a process of choice. There is a divine conviction and will the course of providence. It is our human responsibility to connect with it.

The Unification Church over the last 50 years has overcome tremendous obstacles, tremendous difficulty to come to the point that we stand today. We stand on the foundation of Parents’ victory, at the ending of the restorational era and the beginning of the settlement era. Now you might sit there and look at me and say, what does that all mean?

Because of the failure of Christianity, Father had to move. Father still had his mission. He had to build a foundation on a worldwide level once again, and it was through our movement in which Father could substantiate that. It means that we’ve once again reached that point where Father stood in 1945. It means that upon the foundation of the Unification Church, the Family Federation for World Peace, upon the foundation of all those blessed couples that received the blessing, we can start to build God’s substantial kingdom, start building the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth.

In order to do that, we have to be builders, we have to change our mindset. Dr. Yang gave an analogy of Moses and the Israelites as the chosen people reached the banks of Canaan, and looked across those banks into the land of Canaan, Don’t you think that they had to change their mindset? That is why there was a condition set that it was only the second generation that entered and the first generation did not, because the first generation carries all the baggage of Egypt. What about our movement, as we think about the settlement age, looking across the bank, wanting to build the substantial Kingdom of God here on earth. Don’t we also have to shed ourselves of our baggage?

We need to recognize that the experiences that many of you had -- I’m speaking to the first generation members gathered here -- come from the restorational era, the era that had to be because of the failure of Christianity to unite with Father. The restorational era was an era in which we had to pay indemnity. Indemnity for past failures. In other words, you had to pay restitution for past wrongs so you can make settlement of past debts.

The mindset, the structure, the attitudes, the perceptions that were appropriate then are very different than now. The restoration era was an era in which we had to separate from the satanic world to establish God’s camp, upon which we could be in the position to subjugate the outside world. But that thrust eventually got us out from the mainstream. We carry some of that baggage when we deal with the outside world, don’t we? Many people look at us as an outside organization, a cult, a pariah movement, something out of the mainstream.

But what about the time of settlement? It means something so much different. For example, individual members are often very judgmental amongst each other: "You’re not centered, you’re not this or that." This type of attitudes, although necessary in the past to maintain a certain standard, lead to a lot of in-fighting, pointing fingers. Now that we’ve entered the land of settlement, we have to think not about how to keep separate but about how we can bring everybody in—in theological terms, the nature of our conversation has changed. It’s no longer about how can I, the individual, find salvation. The point of discussion has changed to the family. How can your family enter the kingdom of heaven?

These are monumental shifts in the way we should understand ourselves, our families, and our responsibilities within the settlement age, and it reflects the overall movement and the individual institutions represented in that overall movement. This should not be a time where energy is spent bickering, criticizing, or talking about the negative. It should be a pro-active time in which we take ownership, when each of us feels, "I have to do something!"

Visit some of the Internet chat rooms created by our movement you will see lot of things said, a lot of things pointed out that need improvement. Fine, good. Maybe it’s good, a venting process. But what are you going to do about it? That’s the difference between an owner and somebody who just thinks he’s a part of the process and is riding along. An owner thinks, "If there is a problem, I’m going to fix it." For example, those of you who own a house, if you have a leaky faucet, you fix it. There’s nobody else to blame except yourself if you don’t fix it.

Now that we’ve entered the time of settlement, we have to be owners. We have to feel that this movement is ours and it’s our obligation, our responsibility to take care of it. Instead of wasting our energy in criticism and bickering, let’s focus those energies on things that are constructive and that create initiative, things that are pro-active. This new age is dawning for each and every one of us. If we are able to see and ignite the spark of hope within ourselves and to touch the lives of our community with that spark of hope through our pro-active actions then this movement will be revived. The spirit of this movement will permeate the rest of the community.

A new paradigm has come to the fore because we’ve entered a new age. The first thing that has to change is our mindset. We have to take ownership. We have to feel that this church that we’re sitting in, that we’re worshipping in is ours, and therefore if there are any dents, we should fix them. Don’t wait for someone else to do it. You do it. If enough of you have that type of attitude, things will start to change before your eyes, faster than you would even imagine. That new time has come.

That’s what Father means when he talks about the settlement age, the time of the fourth Adam, the period of the second generation. It’s really a time when we have to take ownership, not just sit back and watch, saying "Oh, I had bad experiences, and I really don’t want to commit any more. I want to take my time." No. Put your neck on the line once again because anything that’s worthwhile takes sacrifice and investment.

We have entered a new age. There is a new paradigm coming to the front. For this movement to be able to capture that and to make that and to own it, we have to change our mindset, especially the first generation. The first generation has been conditioned by the restorational era and has carried a lot of baggage from the restorational era. That baggage, is not necessary for this new age. It’s not just a matter of surviving any more. It’s a matter of building.

Think about raising kids. The role of a parent is the most prestigious role on earth, but all parents know that it takes 100 percent, 200 percent, 300 percent investment to raise your kids. We should have even greater love, devotion and commitment toward our movement, the victorious manifestation of True Parents.

Earlier this afternoon I had a chance to speak to, many, many different CARP members. CARP members of the past, CARP members of the present. Many of them are parents of second generation CARP members, those who are in the STF program or the PLA program. And those parents sometimes say to me, "I think STF is great, but one year in STF is good enough because my kid really needs to go to school." Yet the kids themselves are saying, "I really believe in this STF program. It’s the first time that I was able to experience and understand my faith and make it my own. I want to stay here another year, two years. But you know what? My parents are always telling me to quit because I need to focus on my education." This is something that I hear over and over again. Yet when I speak to parents and ask them, "What’s the key issue that you feel most strongly about that our movement should address?" To a man all blessed parents say that the key issue is the raising of our second generation so that they inherit Father’s tradition. Tell me the irony of that.

Think about you’re the real situation of our second generation kids. From K to 12 they get a completely secular education. How many of us are home constantly to raise your kids? They often go to workshop in the summer, but how much do you really learn at workshop, do you really understand and own your faith? I had a long conversation with Father talking about this very topic, epistemology, the theory of knowledge. I asked him, how does one learn? I had strong opinions and so I put forth my opinion. I believe that you really learn and you really own knowledge not through the cognitive or intellectual process. Even if you understand the basic construct of the argument, it’s all abstract.

You own knowledge only through experience. Isn’t that how you understood parental love when you yourself became a parent? Before becoming a parent, even if someone explains to you about the meaning of parental love, it’s all in the mind. You don’t know it, don’t feel it. Isn’t it the same with the way of faith? Why did you join this movement? Was it because of the powerful arguments of Principle alone, or was it the experience that you felt not only in hearing the message but also experiencing it within the community of faith that you joined?

I would say the moment that you made up your mind to give your life to this movement, to True Parents, was the moment that you had ownership over your faith and your conviction and belief.

Why not then give your kids the opportunity to do the same? When are they going to have a chance to understand that faith if they aren’t out in the front lines testing?

You might think that I, as Father’s son, was born with a silver spoon in my mouth, living in East Garden, the glass imperial palace that nobody has access to. If someone else was to write my story, that’s how it might be presented. But if I tell it, it’s a very different story. From the minute I was born, I was given a certain destiny, and from that moment on I have had to prove myself over and over and over again. Nobody likes to live under but the True Family has to live under a microscope. That puts awesome pressure on young people, especially when parents are not there.

Yet when I reflect back, I am not bitter. If I insisted on finding my own little individual sense of justice, I could not stand here today. I cannot complain. I’m going to digest everything. From this moment forth we’re going to move forward with a new attitude, with a new spirit that is not destructive but that’s creative. What does that mean to be creative? What does that mean to take ownership? It to leave the baggage behind. Look to a new future and the promise that it holds and that awaits you. You know, the biggest challenge of our movement is not the world out there. It’s our own selves. It’s because we are afraid to take that big leap into the unknown future with conviction and with dedication, with our whole heart, with our necks out on the line. Yet I’m telling you, the foundation is there because we stand again at the zero point of history, at a time in which the substantial kingdom can begin to be established.

These are not just words because I know as long as I touch one, two, or more people here, that from this moment they make conviction to do something about it, to become pro-active instead of reactive, to become an owner instead of a renter, then something new will begin and you will start to see it.

You know, going back to the second generation once again, think about the mixed messages that these second generation kids are growing up with. One of the things that you learn when you are a teacher, when you’re a leader is that consistency is important. Consistency. Reinforcement. You can’t say one thing and do another. You can’t do things that are contradictory to what you say or what you profess.

If the main concern of blessed couples is, how to instill in my kids the faith that I received and the energy and the spirit that I received from True Parents then you have to feel it’s your obligation to give life to my kids by supporting the institutions and organizations that are there to help them find that faith, help them find that determination.

I told you that the message that I want to give today goes beyond just the CARP organization because the way I see it everything is connected. So if I want to start talking about CARP and developing a vision for the CARP organization, first I have to clarify the larger, wider issues that exist within our movement at large. Once again, I want to emphasize that we have entered the settlement age. We have to start changing our mindset, our attitudes, our perspective. We have to be willing to leave the baggage of the restorational era behind and start anew. We have to move forward together as a movement, as an organization. We also have to move as blessed families.

How, then, can CARP fulfill its mission of being the apex or the center of a new youth movement in this providential age? The vision of the CARP organization is very simple. We have to revive and resuscitate our evangelical focus. If you don’t like the term evangelical, it means our witnessing activities. Why? If you look at it practically, how do you build a successful organization? We can learn from the other existing models out there, including other churches.

Of course, we offer more than just a church. In one sense, to narrow our movement the Family Federation for World Peace, down to just a church or religious organization is a mistake because we offer a way of life, a substantial way of life. But for the sake of trying to build models that are somewhat similar, although they are not perfectly similar, look at all the religions that are thriving, that are growing. They all have an evangelical, witnessing component that is very strong. On the other hand, if you look at all the other religious organizations that are declining, they lack this fundamental component.

What is happening now, especially over the last couple of years since the creation of Family Federation for World Peace? The model that our movement has adopted is a more congregational model. Our members are settling down with a family in communities and building congregations, and doing outreach activities to other churches, to other faiths, to other denominations. In other words, we’re building a very strong congregational model. Yet what have we not been able to build or focus on? An evangelical component.

Those outreach programs where we make friends with the other churches are good, but they do have limitations. Yes, they accept Father as a great prophet, they accept Father as a great spiritual leader, they accept the meaning and the spirit of the blessing? But do they accept Father as True Parents, as Lord of the Second Advent? Are they willing to give up their lives for True Parents, and therefore be engrafted upon the direct root of True Parents, one of True Parents’ core members? No. This is the component that’s lacking in our movement. And this is the issue that CARP will address because to build a thriving, successful organization that nobody can refute, this component is absolutely critical.

That’s talking on an organizational level. How about talking on a more providential, spiritual level? Why is it that we need to bring in new, young members? What’s the purpose of the restorational providence? To create an ideal family. If you want to put it in a nutshell, the whole purpose of restorational providence is to create an ideal family.

Now when you talk about family, you’re talking about the most intimate relationships, absolute, eternal kind of bonds. Within that family you are inculcated with a certain tradition and culture and value, a vertical heritage that’s absolutely eternal.

In order for us to establish the substantial kingdom, therefore, we need to have young people in great numbers who have that kind of commitment on an eternal level, so they can be engrafted on the ideal family.

Now that means a little more dedication than just going to the blessing and saying, okay, I think Rev. Moon is a great man, a good spiritual leader. It means, "I think True Parents are my parents, and because I’m a member of this family now I’m going to do whatever it takes for the sake of my family." That, my friends, is what we mean by a core member. It means somebody who’s willing to do more than say I like the programs you do and here’s my support. You need to have that constituent body.

The reality is that the core membership of our movement is getting older. Don’t think that your numbers will be replaced by the second generation. The more our movement looks inward, the more it will fail its mission providentially. We have to constantly look to bring new members into our movement, to bring young blood into our movement. Therefore, from the foundation of CARP I will put my energy in developing a youth movement.

If we are able to bring in enough numbers into our movement, I’m telling you we can move this nation of America. You think about the power of a grassroots, college campus-based youth movement. A tremendous amount of political, economic power that can be substantiated. Father’s message goes beyond just religion. If what we believe and what we profess can be a way of life, as Father clearly said, there is no need for religion. Religion is a tool or a product in which fallen man can come once again closer to God, but the ultimate purpose is not just the liberation of the spirit but the liberation of spirit and body. We believe in building a substantial foundation, not just a faith-based foundation.

The conferences I have initiated on building a true family culture is a part of this effort to accomplish that If you have not heard of it, eventually you will. And I want each and every one of you to participate because your contribution will be not only necessary but also good. This goes directly in line with what CARP will focus on in the future. CARP focusing on the external mission of evangelism will bring to the outside world the witness of the second generation. What better witness is it for second generation kids to go out witnessing and bring the truth to other second generation kids? What better witness to the value of Principle than the second generation kids that are products of your blessing?

I think you can start seeing the connections. This crucial element, the building of the evangelical component, is a necessary thrust of our movement and you can start to see how your kids, can be connected to that, how the kids in the world at large can be connected to that, and eventually how our movement will prosper from that. Need I say more?

Let me ask one of the younger ones here. How old are you? Eleven? Do you want to eventually join CARP? You don’t know. By the time you turn 18, you’ll probably want to join CARP. I think you will find is that the most exciting things will be happening in the CARP organization. Those who go to CARP, to build the momentum for the resurrection of our US CARP movement will be building up a youth movement here in the United States. They will be part of the core cadre that has a lot to be proud about, and will have a lot to show when they go to college or grad school.

I know that many of you as parents, first generation, gave up your education to give your life for True Parents. I’m sure maybe in the back of your mind you sometimes think "I feel bad I gave up my education. I’m going to make sure my kids go to school. I’ll do whatever it takes to make them go to school." Great. Send them to school. But in the process, don’t forget to emphasize the religious element of their education. I am all for education. That’s one of the reasons why I already created an education foundation. Education is necessary for our movement, but not at the price of the spiritual lives of our kids.

I don’t care how important you think education is. If at some point in their life you don’t give them an opportunity to find their faith, what’s the use? What’s the purpose? I see parents as being CARP’s greatest ally. I see the first generation as being CARP’s greatest ally because there is a direct need to educate your kids, to allow them to have the experience that allows them to have true knowledge to be there.

From what I’ve seen so far, second generation kids are the ones who are excited about the CARP organization. When some of the second generation kids found out there was going to be a leadership change, they immediately called me up and said they wanted to meet me at East Garden. I said, okay. I already knew what they were going to say. They were all part of the STF and PLA program and I knew they were going to come and speak to me about how great the program is and how much it needs to be supported. I already knew it, but I said, okay, come on.

They came and they did just that. So I said, how old are you? They said, 18, 19, 20, 21. I asked, are you telling me that you really believe in this, that you’re going to be willing to do whatever it takes to make these programs a tremendous success? Do you really mean that? Yes, they said. Then I asked, do you know what it’s going to take? No. I told them, you have to get a taste of ownership. I believe that the best learning experiences are those that when you go out you face challenges but you’re able to overcome them. That’s how you grow.

If you help someone too much along the way you can build a welfare or dependent kind of mentality. Then they’re not self-reliant. They always need the help of somebody else.

What if there was not the movement at large, and I really believed in an issue such as abstinence? Am I ready to create my own curriculum based upon this abstinence thing, not only develop the content, but get people motivated to join in this crusade, raise the finances to support it. Are you willing to do that? That’s what taking ownership means.

As long as there’s some CARP organization or outside organization helping you, you might think you’re doing a good job, but in the real world not really be accomplishing much. So I told this to these kids. They kind of looked at me with blank faces, but they made the determination. They said, whatever it takes. I met those same kids in Chicago again recently. Once again they said, whatever it takes. I told them what it could be like. They said they’ll make the investment. When I see that I have hope because as long as the second generation kids and our young members with that level of dedication, who are willing to put their necks out on the line, there’s always hope.

Does it mean that the course ahead of them is easy? No. I’m not going to stand here before you and lie, say the future is easy. The future is not easy. It’s going to take a tremendous amount of sacrifice. But eventually what is built will be something that everybody can be proud of. They are willing to do what it takes to get the job done. That is the beginning of ownership mentality. That is the beginning of the creative process.

Do you think when God first created mankind He wanted archangels to create them? No. God went into the trenches, rolled up his shirtsleeves and did the creation himself. When children into the world, is it somebody else that does the act? No, it is only you. Everything in the creative process comes out of ownership mentality. You understand love when you own it, do you not? Isn’t that the meaning and the basis behind the four realms of heart? To own the love, to experience it in your family.

I’m saying that you have to own this institution. CARP is not my institution. Especially US CARP should be the institution of US members, second generation, young members. And not only young members, but their parents and the CARP alumni members should be owners of this institution. If I am able to build that type of awareness, to build that type of coalition, the youth movement will begin today.

Don’t look at me and say, oh, Hyun Jin Nim is just a good orator who learned how to speak at Harvard Business School. Believe me, I took no classes in public speaking. The point of the matter is this -- truth is truth, fact is fact, reality is reality. What needs to be done is very clear. We need to develop a thriving youth movement that is the evangelical witnessing backbone of our movement, that brings new young blood into our movement, dedicated and determined to follow True Parents and substantiate their tradition in their lives. That is what we need to do, above all else.

But CARP cannot do it alone. Instead of looking at an institution to do this for you, I’m going to ask all of you to do what you can for the CARP organization, supporting this new movement in every respect. If we do this, we can build a thriving movement in the United States. We can find a solution and build leadership for the young people of America. And those young people are really lost. You and I know it. Look at every single community in the United States. Look at the number of broken families in the United States. Look at the number of lost kids in the United States. Just ask your kids because they go to school with this lost generation

If we think that somehow by just ignoring these issues we’re going to run away, we’re going to hide from it -- well, we’re not. We’re going to deal with it head-on by trying to build solutions through the organizations and the institutions that Father has built. That institution for the youth movement is the CARP organization.

From this moment forth I look at all of you as CARP members. Those of you who like that status, raise your hands. Well, I’ve got a lot of new CARP members here. Thank you very much.

23. Han Madang Games Speech

Hyun Jin Moon
February 14, 2000

Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, participants from all four corners of the world, greetings and warm welcome to the 4th World Culture and Sports Festival and the 4th international Han Madang Games.

I would like to take this time to offer my deep appreciation to God and True Parents for allowing me to open these games here in Korea, the cultural and spiritual fatherland of the Unification Church and the Family Federation for World Peace International.

We are especially fortunate to have the presence of our True Parents, the founders of this event, to encourage and inspire us as we stand at the dawn of a new millenium.

Today, we are gathered at the Olympic gymnastics stadium, where in 1988, representatives from around the globe gathered to partake in the Seoul Olympic Games. I was fortunate to have been a participant during those games and was engulfed by the promise and hope of mutual understanding and appreciation that the spirit of the Olympic Games garnered.

Twelve years have passed since those games yet, upon reflection, the world has not substantially embraced the spirit of mutual understanding and cooperation that the Seoul games represented. Although the specter of the Cold War and worldwide nuclear destruction no longer plagues our subconscious, we still face the real threat of regional conflicts around the globe, stemming from religious, racial, ethnic and national differences.

As the ideological umbrella of communism and democracy no longer encapsulates the world into two opposing spheres of influence, bitter individual and regional tensions that lay under the thin veneer of worldwide communism and the free world has surfaced to the fore. Like a Pandora's box, our cherished newly found freedoms unleashed by breaking the lock of ideological conflict has unfortunately opened new problems around the globe.

In one sense we have shed ourselves of one large problem and replaced it with many small ones, as "racial," "national," "ethnic," and "religious," individualism replaced the solidarity of defending the respective ideologies of communism and democracy. One only needs to pick up a newspaper or watch the news to have the very real but horrifying images of destruction and hatred haunting our homes, schools, workplace, communities and nation.

It is not surprising, then, to see the disillusionment and lack of moral rectitude among our young people. If the youth truly are the product of their environment then, so the logic goes, the extreme self-centered individualism exhibited by many of our young people's lack of respect for themselves, their families, communities, and their nations is a direct result of the greater individualism that is plaguing our world. As a result, many have been de-sensitized towards the value of moral responsibility and respect for others, lacking empathy for their parents, siblings, children, friends, teachers etc.-the relational matrix which eventually makes up a family, community, and nation, and thus further perpetuating the problems in our world.

Shortly after the Seoul Olympic Games, at a time when the world was celebrating the end of the Cold War with the collapse of the Iron Curtain, my parents were troubled that rampant individualism and materialism would fill the vacuum left by communism. For this reason, they looked for the possibility of building a new world order. It was with this premonition and vision that my parents had the foresight to create and initiate the World Culture and Sports Festival, with the Han Madang games as youthful expression of God's hope and vision for the world.

The Han Madang games has a special purpose in this Festival for it highlights the unique contributions of the youth, with their vigor, creativity and idealism, in initiating an ideal brotherhood through healthy competition and cooperation. Although these principles are somewhat similar to the goals and aims of other world sports events, like the Olympic Games, what distinguishes this event is that these games recognize the primary importance of divine grace and parental heart as a source of true brotherhood. In short, the underlying premise of these games are that without the presence of God and the substantial True Parents of mankind, true peace and harmony can never be achieved.

To understand this vision in its concrete form, one must look at the world from the context of a single human family. In a family, who is it that creates unity and stability when there are tension and conflict among siblings? It is undeniably the parents of the household. Then, one can ask the following question, "Who is it that blesses a father and mother with an absolute, unchanging love that is the source of stability for the rest of the family?" It must undeniably be God.

If the world is seen as a one large human family, the different racial, ethnic, national, religious groups are a composite of the colorful mosaic that reflects God's family. Alone, these varying groups represent an individual quality of God's character, creativity and essence. Like siblings with a distinct character and personality, their differences have been the source of conflict. Under these circumstances, the need for a parental role model that embodies God's parental love becomes apparent in order to offer the solution to their conflicts. This is the role of the True Parents, the representative ideal parents of humankind.

Therefore, to build a proper model for establishing a world of peace and harmony we must recognize that this hope can never be achieved without the divine grace of God as well as the substantial position of True Parents!

In Korean, "Han Madang" has a special meaning that captures the essence of this vision. "Han" means large and wide while "Madang" represents the symbol of community spirit and cooperation.

At a time when international sporting events have increasingly become commercial and political vehicles to further the economic cause or prestige of a particular nation, it has become ever more important to re-orient global athletic competition to its original purpose, to foster true brotherhood and cooperation. As was evident with the recent scandals surrounding the Olympic Organizing Committee's acceptance of bribes in determining future site locations, to the increasingly un-sportsmanlike fight for medals between nations, the ideals and principles of the those games have been greatly clouded.

Participants of the Han Madang games! We are fortunate to be gathered here to celebrate the aspirations, energy and dreams of the world's youths through our athletic endeavors. We are also fortunate to be carrying the torch of inspirational ideals that goes beyond our own individual or team accomplishments. Let us embody a true brotherhood that brings about harmony and cooperation through our love and dedication for public service. Most of all, let us recognize the need for divine grace and parental love as the source of our substantial brotherhood.

Ladies and gentlemen, we stand at the dawn of a new millenium. The world is our canvas. Let us seize the moment and our futures by sowing the seeds of cooperation and mutual understanding that embodies the ideal of God. If we are able to accomplish this in ourselves, families and nations, certainly, we can build an ideal world of peace and harmony. We are the colors of this canvas and what we do are the brush strokes that would eventually create an image of our vision. If we put to practice the ideals of these games in our own lives, we will undeniably establish a kingdom of heaven on earth. If you sincerely believe this vision, please rise with me to shout Mansei, Mansei, Mansei, for from this moment forth the world would clamor to the promise of being once again within the bosom of God.

Thank you very much, God bless you.

22. Inheritance And Development

Hyun Jin Moon
World Speaking Tour 2000
Gwangju, Korea

This is an excerpt from 2003 "Owning the Culture of Heart" by Hyun Jin Moon.

I was a young man once. I looked around me and tried to find that vision, that hope. Many times, those things that I thought might be going to lead me in that direction came to a dead end. Yet, the ultimate conclusion was this: Truth, hope and vision were right there with me. Because I was the son of True Parents, God's providence, God's hope and God's mission were moving through me.

I know, especially regarding you young people in our movement, because you are young, because you are searching, you get attracted or influenced by many different things. Yet one thing you don't realize is that you don't have to look any further than yourself, who you are, what you are. If you are the Second Generation, your essence, who you are, is connected directly to God's providence. If you are young First Generation, your identity and conviction is directly connected to True Parents and the foundation that was built. You need not look any further than yourself. In other words, your roots are here.

I am 32 years old. I grew up with many of the Second Generation. They were my friends from around my age group. Out of all those friends that I know and remember, not many are left. They are still searching. So I know the situation of the Second Generation and the difficulty that the Second Generation faces. I know it well. I went to the University of Bridgeport and I gathered all the Blessed Children and gave a talk to them. The essence of my talk was this: "Regardless of whether you leave or stay, you will always be a Blessed Child. That's what your essence is. You'll always be a Unification Church member." Let me ask you something. Blood lineage is absolute, eternal and unchanging. Our identity - do we make our identity or is it given to us? Those who think that you create your identity, raise your hands. If you look at the audience right now, most of the young people will say, "We create our identity." Especially in America, that's the case. Each person thinks that he creates his own identity. Individual freedom! Yet think about it and reflect deeply. Do we really create our identity or is it given to us?

Your identity was given to you by your parents, by your brothers and sisters, by all the people who love you, who surround you. That is how your identity is formed. So if you really think about it, identity is something that you cannot just create or remake. It's something that is given to you. Even if I don't want to be Father's son, I will always be Father's son. I will be Hyun Jin Moon. In other words, identity is given to you.

So I told those Blessed Children that what the outside world is telling them is false. To think that you can create your identity without considering all those people who love you and care about you is a tremendous sin. Why? It is because truly, our identity is molded by those around us.

So I know that I am Hyun Jin Moon, that I have two older brothers, four younger brothers and seven sisters, and that I have parents, True parents. I know that I have the whole Unification Church that looks to me as a member of the True Family. In other words, my identity is formed by all the people around me. And it's my responsibility to live up to that and live up to the expectations of that identity. Isn't it the same for you? Think about it. Really reflect and think about it. It's the same for you, too. So the conclusion is that our identity is not our own to make. It is given to us by those who love and care about us most. That's why, especially at this time, the importance of family is going to be elevated.

21. Family of Peace: World of Peace

Hyun Jin Moon

This address was given at the Closing Banquet of the Hoon Dok Hae conference on October 31, 1999.

This is the third time I have come here to give congratulations to participants of these conferences. As I stand here before you I am in awe by the spirit of your participation here and the openness with which you engaged in my father’s ministry. That to me, as a son, is something that is tremendously moving and gives me personally a tremendous amount of hope, and tremendous amount of positive inspiration in human beings. That they can actually go over dogma, differences in culture and language and actually recognize what is common and recognize the common element, which is family. This should be truly the focus of discussion as we prepare for the new millennium.

I gave a message to the last conference talking about how my father’s ministry and message is not just a so-called "spiritual message". I emphasize the fact that my father’s message is also grounded in practice. In other words it is a practical message. It’s not something that is beyond human experience. It’s not something that we cannot feel and grasp. The reason why I mention this, the reason why I like to reinforce this understanding to you today is because I want to leave an impact. The essence of my father’s ministry has been a ministry on building true families, if I had to sum it up.

Now the span of my father’s ministry has been more than fifty years. In that time he has engaged in tremendous breadth of activity, as Neil suggested, ranging from the academics to even business. Yet the fundamental essence of what he has preached that maintained its continuity, and that connected all of these various projects was the centrality of the family. Why? It’s because the family, if we want to talk about the human condition, should be the first point of discussion, of which we are, of what we are. Is it not in the family that we as sons and daughters recognize our love for our parents and our obligations to them? Is it not in the family that we, as brothers and sisters, recognize compassion, recognize the humanity in our fellow man? Is it not in the family that we also overcome the very difficulties that might underlie brotherly disputes, or sisterly disputes? Is it not from our own experiences of resolving and reconciling these differences within our families, as adults, as leaders, as teachers, we fall back on these experiences to recognize how we should deal with human circumstances as leaders, as teachers.

So the point I want to really stress to you here today, and I think Professor Rich, if I may be so bold as to mention your name, I think he hit it right on the dot, that my father’s message is a universal message. Once we shed all of our dogmas that separate religious leadership, once we shed our cultural differences, habits and traditions, once we shed our own biases and we look at what is common we recognize that truly the family should be the core of discussion as we enter the new millennium.

It is in the family that we as human beings share something in common. I think to understand my father you have to understand this because this is the way that he looks at the world. He looks at the world as one God-centered family. He believes that his mission, whether you believe he is the Messiah or not is a mission of a True Parent. It is a mission of somebody who recognizes the very essence or the importance of the family in the human condition. He tries to bridge the difficulties, all the strains that might exist in family, to bring resolution as a source of inspiration for all the various conflicts that we face in the world.

I have been a student of history. One thing that I have noticed in history is that conflicts arise out of misunderstanding. If you look at conflicts from the perspective of nation we can almost give it some human type of expression, saying that one nation, just like one brother, might not understand my position. Just like an individual brother might not understand my position. If we start looking at the world from this perspective couldn’t we start building the bridges within ourselves to actually reach out and bring an end to these hostilities that we see in the world today? We no longer have a monolithic ideological enemy such as communism. We no longer have any type of ideology that separates mans’ or our conversations, our daily conversations anymore. Truly the next battleground is a battleground that is going to be rooted within our societies, that deals with, "How do we as human beings learn to live with each other? How do we resolve the various conflicts between generations, meaning parents and children? How do we resolve conflicts between brothers, and therefore actually nations? I think it is so appropriate at this time that my father has launched these Hon Dock Have Conferences where you can see clearly what his true message has been for the last fifty years. It has been a ministry of family. It has been a message of peace, focusing human conflicts or difficulties within the context of the family.

This century has been a century of tremendous difficulty. Within this century alone we have experienced two world wars. Those are world wars when the world was in conflict. It touched each and every one of us regardless of where we came from. I am a Korean. I know the devastation that was brought unto my nation after World War II. I know, because I can see it and I can hear from the experiences of my parents as well as the scars on their bodies that these conflicts weren’t something that was somewhere out there. These were actually experiences by people I care about. That has made a tremendous impression on me. This has been the legacy of this century. The century has been a century of tremendous hardship and conflict.

I want to impose a challenge on each and every one of you. As academic leaders, as political leaders and especially as religious leaders let us make the twenty-first century, and the new millennium not of conflict and war, but of peace. That is why I say that the Hon Dock Have Conference focuses on the family. It is such an appropriate conference for discussion as we enter the new millennium.

I know that as a young man I need inspiration, not only from my parents, but from such prominent leaders from many different religions as well as political groups as well as academic fields. Why? In order for us to establish a millennium of peace we have to work together. We have to work in concert. As a member of a new generation, as a young man, I want to challenge you to set the precedent that we can inherit of dialogue and peace, of thrusting down our dogmas, our entrenched beliefs, and touching that which is common in all of us to solve the very fundamental questions that plague each and everyone of us, irregardless of which nation we come from.

I want to once again congratulate each and every one of you for coming here today. I also want to challenge each and every one of you. Please take what you have learned about my father. Please take what you have learned about the importance of family in our discussions when we talk about the new millennium of peace, when we talk about the twenty-first century. Please take that to your congregations. Please take that to your classrooms. Please take that to your political forums and make it the source of discussion for all mankind so that we elevate the position of the family as a standard bearer for peace.

20. The Fulfillment of Parents' Vision

Hyun Jin Moon
October 27, 1998

On his recent visit to Korea, Hyun Jin Nim spoke to the general membership and also to church leaders. As many more senior church leaders have in recent years become national messiahs or been mobilized to Japan, the majority of church leaders in Korea are young.] Instead of going my usual route of asking the audience what I should speak about, I will go right ahead and address the topic I feel needs to be addressed today. Is that all right?

The first thing I would like to say is, we have to recognize that especially at this time we are entering a new era in God's providence. In the past whenever I heard people talking about a new era, it always implied that there was some type of break or end to the previous era, or that this new era was separate from the era that preceded it. But what do I mean by saying that this is a new era? Do I see this era as separate from the preceding era? Or is it a continuation of it?

At this point I want to ask if I can walk around while I speak. Is that okay? [Yes!] Standing before you I feel that we are working together. So we have to be one in mind and spirit. I'm going to forego the formalities and conventions and try to communicate with you from the outset on a level of heart. The reason being there is not enough time. This is a new era. Either you're with it or you're not. That's why in coming here before you, instead of building formality I want to come to you on a level where we can relate. Then you can truly understand that this is an era we have to be prepared for and accept.

So what do I mean by a new era? Does this mean that my vision is separate from the vision that Parents have given you? Or is it the fulfillment of Parents' vision? To answer this question I'd like to use an analogy. When I was at the headquarters church on Sunday I gave members the analogy of the Israelites following Moses to the Promised Land. God promised the Israelite people that He would deliver them from the hands of Egypt and give them a new land in which they could create their own nation. Of course making the break from Egypt took forty years in the wilderness - before they actually saw the border of the Land of Canaan. Do you think God meant for the people of the Israelite nation to perish in the wilderness? [No.] There was the promise of the land of Canaan.

If we look at that whole process, the people walking in the wilderness recognized that wilderness as their reality, as their vision at that time. They didn't talk about the land of Canaan; they had to think about finding food, shelter and clothing, the fundamentals of life. They could not think of other things. Yet when they came upon the border to the land of Canaan, then they realized the ultimate fulfillment of God's vision and promise, which was to deliver them to the land of Canaan.

Parents have said that we have now entered the settlement era. What does that mean? It is analogous to the Israelite people arriving out-side the land of Canaan. Yet before they entered, they had to leave behind all the baggage they had carried from Egypt and during their years in the wilderness. They had to start fresh and move forward. That was the new vision they had to accept.

This time is also such a time. We have entered the settlement era, the time in which we are to build God's Kingdom. If we want to enter that era, we have to leave all our past bag-gage behind and start afresh. Think about it. At the last blessing in June, Parents gave a heavenly proclamation liberating even the worst people in human history, including Hitler and Stalin. This was unprecedented. Isn't it also unprecedented that the standard of the blessing is lower than previously? The conditions are very simple now, right? One accepts the four pledges and drinks the holy wine and is then a candidate for the holy blessing. Isn't it so? That is the reality now. Does this mean that all the past values and all that Parents have taught before were false and are nullified now? No. It means we are entering a new era.

Does that mean the conditions you set to receive your blessing were just suffering that had no meaning because blessing in essence is this simple? No! Think about it. Those Israelites who followed Moses on the trek from Egypt to the land of Canaan, did they not suffer and have to set a higher condition of faith and loyalty? It was upon the kinds of conditions that they set that a foundation was created to build a nation - a nation that could work on the worldwide level.

So what is happening to the Unification Church right now? I have had the opportunity to travel around the country and around the world talking to members, and I know some are concerned about the standard of the blessing, by the fact that it is getting lower. Sometimes they say, "The blessing standard was so high before; I set such a high standard. Yet we give the blessing away so easily now. We are diluting the value of the blessing. "As pastors, I'm sure you are faced with this kind of questions or concerns. Is the Unification Church just going for a numbers game, because we just want the number are we therefore diluting the standard?

I think to understand this we have to reflect on the purpose of the Unification Church and the purpose of God's providence and Parents' mission. Ultimately God's purpose is the restoration of all humanity. Why do we always come to Cain and Abel struggles? Because the ultimate purpose of restoration is to create an ideal family, to bring the Cain and Abel camps together, and to bring the vertical standard of parents and children together. That is our purpose.

The blessing is not something reserved just for Unification Church members, just as the purpose of the Israelite nation was not to exist for the sake of Israel alone but for the world. Father said that if Christianity had accepted him in 1945, the foundation for the restoration of the world could have been fulfilled in seven years, by 1952. Although our theology is very closely aligned with Judeo-Christian theology, especially the Old and New Testaments, do you think God's purpose of restoration in sending Parents here was for Jews and Christians alone, or for the world?

The foundation of Christianity on the worldwide level at that time was to receive True Parents. Parents were to use that foundation to build a God-centered world. But not for Christians alone -- for the whole world. Because Christianity did not accept Father, he had to establish the Unification Church. All that Parents needed to be fulfilled through Christianity they had to re-indemnify through the establishment of the Unification Church. Father had to re-create a worldwide foundation.

Now we are at the stage in which we have a worldwide foundation, but do you think the purpose of restoration stops at the Unification Church alone? Remember, the purpose of restoration and True Parents' mission is to restore the world, to bring the Cain and Abel camps together. If the Unification Church stands in the position of Abel, and the world stands in the position of Cain, the purpose is to bring those worlds together. Therefore, Parents had to set the conditions by which that unity could come about. Why? Because conflict between brothers can never be resolved by the power of brothers alone. They need the central authority of parents.

The history of humanity has been a history of conflict because True Parents had not come. That is the fundamental essence or core of our theology, isn't it? That is why we first have to understand what the mission of the Unification Church is. It is a public mission - to exist for the sake of the world. We have built the foundation up to this point, giving out for the sake of the world in order to fulfil this purpose.

What is meant by the settlement era? I think it is analogous to zero point, or the beginning point in time. When I compare this to the initial building of the Unification Church foundation, analogous to the forty years wilderness course and based on the conditions set then, at this time we can stand almost at a zero point or beginning point in human history. Just as God's purpose is to bring together the Cain and Abel camps of the Unification Church and the rest of the world; when we go back to even the individual level, doesn't it make sense that the internal aspect and the physical aspect come together? Many times we talk about this on the individual level. But I want you to think about it for one moment from an organizational perspective. Why? Because the settlement era is the time to build the Kingdom. The Israelites looking at the land of Canaan and in the process of settling there had to establish a government and an infrastructure, they had to build educational institutions, and so on. The attitude, the mentality and perspective they needed to have were very different from those needed when trying to find food or shelter or water for the next day. Don't you think so?

The time of settlement is one of putting down roots. What does that mean for the Unification Church and for our leadership? Does anyone have an opinion? I don't know. What does it mean? Should I leave you in suspense or should I explain? [Please explain!] If I always explain, you will never try to figure things out by yourself. Isn't that so? [Laughter]?

The answers have all been give. Father has said everything he needs to say. What I am saying is nothing new. So what does that mean for new Unification Church leadership? [Setting the tradition.] What else? Everything is revolving around tradition, which is good. But as we enter a new era there is new focus. I asked Appa, "What does the settlement era mean, and what does it imply for the leader-ship of our movement?" Father explained it to me in this way: In the past, our movement worked on the family level. That is why many of you are talking about tradition. Tradition is very important in maintaining a vertical standard within the family. However, now when we talk about the settlement era we are entering the level of the nation. In other words, the foundation on the family level having been fulfilled, we are therefore moving to the level of the nation. I don't want you to misunderstand me. It does not mean that tradition and understanding Father's heart are not important. They are absolutely important. When I began speaking I asked you if talking about a new era implies a discontinuation of the previous era. It does not. It is a building upon what was established in the past. But now we have to work on the national level.

All of you here today are pastors of your own congregations. I look at you as the leadership of our movement. When I ask this question, it relates directly to your responsibility. So I ask you, what does it mean for you? (Foundation of substance.] That's right, building the foundation of sub-stance. Methodology is also part of building the system. The method used has an effect on what is created. For example, let's say you are writing something-the way you write will determine how the writing looks, won't it? You can write upside down, lying down, you can write on a table or on your lap. Try those different positions and observe your writing. The method you use will determine the type of sub-stance you create. I think one way to put this in context is to go back and re-read the message Father gave during my Family Federation inauguration. Appa set there a new paradigm for leadership. It's not only the internal foundation. Appa said that the future leadership of our movement has to have a substantial foundation. Why is it so important at this time? Because we have risen to the national level. When you are working on a family level it is usually the elders who take responsibility and the leadership positions. But when working on a national level, we are dealing with many many different families. Therefore the criteria will change. Those who have not only an internal foundation but also external capability can be effective leaders. Do you think the position of a nation's president is something that is determined by age or by ability? By ability. To you, the Unification Church leadership, especially here in Korea, this should be a liberating revelation. Have you not wondered, on reading the Divine Principle? It says clearly that we have to build the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth before we build it in the spirit world.

I know there are many mysteries about the spirit world, but more and more we have been receiving revelation about what it is like. One such revelation has come from Dr. Sang Hun Lee. What did he say about the spirit world? What is it like? Do you reside close to heavenly Father based upon the position you held on earth, the amount of money you had or other similar criteria? Or is your position determined by the merit of your life? Is it determined by age or by seniority? If so Adam and Eve would be the closest to Heavenly Father. Or is it based upon the merit of the life you have lived, the degree to which you have lived in dedication and service to Heavenly Father, that determines your place? It is focusing on the realm of shimjung. As Unification Church members who strive to establish mind and body union and perfection, we should strive not only for the highest place in the spirit world but also for the highest place on earth. That way we bring the two worlds together. Then we establish the Kingdom of Heaven on earth as well as in the spirit world. Do you think this is right or wrong? Effort and merit.

I had a chance to meet with all the regional leaders before meeting with you, and I also spoke to them about a new paradigm. The foundation that Parents have built is tremendous. The direction that Father has given me as his son is to put the flesh upon the bones of this foundation. However, I cannot do it by myself. I need your support. You have to come with me, walking side by side with me, to put the flesh on the bones of this movement. It is not going to happen easily. That means you have to strive hard to keep up and to follow.

Can you do this? If you want to be the true future leaders of our movement, you have to be able to keep up. You have to look at yourselves as historical people, as historical leaders setting the precedent for a new generation. Think about the situation right now. The young people of this world are lost, especially in modern societies. I'm sure that some of you are overwhelmed by the small problems in your churches, but you have to look beyond them and recognize, "As a historical man, as a representative of God and True Parents at this time, regardless of how small my foundation seems to be, I am connected to God's worldwide providence! This providence is moving forward, and I am moving forward with it!" That's the way you have to think. Can you do that?

This is a new time. The slate is clear; a blank slate. What we harvest in the future all depends upon what we sow. This is not a time for self-centeredness, or for petty rivalry or differences between, for example, first and second generation. It is not a time for comparison with others, for thinking one per-son is better than another. Remember what I am saying, that the slate is clean. We are at the borders of the land of Canaan, and just like the Israelites we have to leave all our old bag-gage behind as we move forward. This is a time in which we have to work together in common effort with the focus of building God's kingdom first. It is the people and the leaders who put His kingdom and providence before themselves that God needs in the future.

All of you gathered here today, are you such people? If you are, raise your hands. Great! I'm glad that you are such people. Then this movement has a future, and our future has a foundation.

One thing I would like to emphasize is, although we have entered this new era, it is not a time in which we will face no opposition. Doesn't the Bible say the Last Days will be a time of judgement, and that great chaos will flow through the land? Don't you feel now that the spirit world is working more than ever? Just as the Christians in Korea have stood against the advancement of the Unification Church, so too there is interference from the evil spirit world. But the way I view this is not from a position of defeat or cowering. I look at it as a challenge for our movement. I look at this time of unrest as one in which leadership can rise up. When people are con-fused and lost, isn't that the time when true leaders arise? True leaders, through the blood, sweat and tears of their own merit, rise and lead into the future. I look at this as that kind of time, and I want to propose a challenge to each and every one of you. Will you become that type of leader? Will you be strong enough, regardless of how hard the wind blows, to lead your congregations and the Korean people in the building of God's kingdom? Yes or no? [Yes!] Those who make their pledge raise your hands and stand up! How great!

[Hyun Jin Nim leads three cheers of mansei:] Hananim, mansei! Cham Pumonim, mansei! Hanguk Tongil Gyohae, mansei!

19. Letters About Hyo Jin and Nan Sook

North Garden
Kodiak, Alaska
September 9, 1998

To: Regional Directors, State Leaders, Tribal Messiahs, Department Leaders, all Members.

Dear brothers and sisters,

Greetings in True Parents' name. As newly appointed vice president of the FFWPUI, and as a son of our True Parents, I would like to express my gratitude for your life of ongoing sacrifice for the sake of God and True Parents. Although we are absorbed in our various missions and responsibilities, I think we all are concerned about Nan Sook's book about her life experiences. I feel it important to share with you the heart and spirit of my family in relationship to this.

Most of us first evaluate challenging situations based upon a rational interpretation of the Principle. Indeed, the logical character of the Principle is a great blessing, as it allows us to enter into a deep understanding of God's purpose of creation, the nature of spirit world and so forth. But while the logical structure of Principle may be what attracts us most at first, as we mature in our life of faith and dedication to God and True Parents, we realize that the framework of the Principle is incomplete outside of the context of true love. We can realize that God's true purpose of creation moves through the rational framework to bear fruit in the realm of heart, or shimjung. When we consider the tragedy of the fall, we see that God could have left Adam and Eve with no chance for redemption, based upon the lawful aspect of Principle. But the Principle truly arises out of shimjung, God's heart. True Mother spoke of this as "the logic of love." This is why God took responsibility for His wayward children in the garden, and the providence of restoration could ensue.

I hope that we can keep this in mind as we look at the current situation. No one can deny that we are working through a terrible tragedy for Hyo Jin Hyun and hence for our entire family. But we cannot allow the difficulties anyone faces, or decisions anyone makes in response to them, to shake our faith. It is in times of challenge and disappointment in particular that we have to understand God's providence not just as an intellectual exercise but from the perspective of heart.

Our family has followed a difficult and unique spiritual path as a result of Father's uncompromising commitment to a public life. Each family member has had to face their own trials and suffering to discover the true meaning and value of True Parents. On this course, each person confronts unique challenges, as in any family, and the problems that might exist for some do not necessarily apply to others.

To understand God's heart of restoration, as well as the heart of our True Parents for their children, we can reflect on our own love as parents for our own children. I do not think that any of us as parents act simply on the basis of rules and regulations, rewards and punishments. Parental love forever seeks understanding, forgiveness, reconciliation and growth.

Therefore we believe in the possibility of redemption in every situation. We know that through true love, everything will be restored. Together with True Parents, we consider Nan Sook to be part of the family. We do not criticize her, even though we do not agree with what she sets forth in the book. We do not seek redress for the difficulties that will result from the book's publication. She is not our enemy, but a daughter, a wife and mother, and our sister.

We are ready to take care of unresolved problems and we would like Nan Sook to be part of the healing process. True Father's family is responsible for the restoration of 6,000 years of biblical history. And as always, through your love and prayer for True Parents and the True Family, we can shoulder this great responsibility and overcome all the challenges on the way. True love gives us the strength to go beyond the past and create a new future. Together we bear the task of bringing to fruition the investment made by God, True Parents, the True Family and each of you. Our True Parents are firm in their commitment and vision, and are growing stronger each day. As we maintain unity with God and them, we have absolute confidence in victory.

Please take these things to heart over the coming weeks. I thank you deeply for your attendance of True Parents throughout the years as well as at this historic moment.

Sincerely,
In True Parents' Love,
Hyun Jin Moon,
Vice President FFWPUI

To: Regional Directors, State Leaders, Tribal Messiahs and all Members.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

You may or may not be aware of negative stories currently in the media. Much of it revolves around the recent publication of a book called In the Shadow of the Moons, by Nansook Hong (Boston: Little, Brown & Co., 1998). It may not be a pressing matter for you to read this book, but occasions may arise in which you find yourself called upon by friends or family to respond to issues raised.

We write at this time to offer information, positions, and reflections which will help, should such occasions arise. In the book and related negative media, you are likely to encounter certain recurring themes and attacks. We have identified approximately six such areas and have given these matters very careful consideration. As you prayerfully develop your views and understanding please make use of the following aspects which should be considered when addressing these points:

1. Issues of Personal and Marital Abuse

As you know Father and Mother both teach and embody the noblest ideal of love and mutual respect between husband and wife. We have been taught from day one that our spouse is God's own child. For men, our wives are daughters of God. ANY form of abuse or disrespect, and certainly physical abuse, is absolutely unacceptable.

2. Issues of Financial Misuse

Father teaches and practices the principles of honesty and integrity in financial affairs. All of the businesses and non-profit organizations affiliated with the Unification Church (HSA-UWC) are audited by a firm of certified public accountants every year and are in compliance with IRS regulations.

3. Issues of Political Power

All evangelical religions have as part of their mission the spread of Gospel, the "Good News." Unificationists believe God wants His love to reach all people and naturally invest in spreading Unification teachings.

Father's opponents argue that father personally seeks political power. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Father is a 78-year old religious leader. He has never sought political office or power. He simply leads the life of a devoted religious leader. As with other religious leaders, Father seeks to influence society and culture to embrace spiritual values embodied in his religious teachings.

4. Religious Freedom

Father has a deep and abiding love for the United States and its tradition of religious freedom. He has great respect for America's Judeo-Christian foundations, and for the many great religions which currently influence American culture. As a religious leader, Father adds his voice to the many who express concern over current trends toward extreme individualism and excessive materialism. True Parents are completely sincere in their work for the sake of America, its freedoms and its traditional Judeo- Christian, family values. These works, including those listed below, are in no way a ruse in order to gain membership in the Unification Church, or to "legitimate" True Parents' religious teachings. Father has initiated a great many projects to support spiritual values in America. These include:

The Family Federation for World Peace and Unification
True Family Values Ministry
Women's Federation for World Peace
The International Coalition for Religious Freedom
Pure Love Alliance
The Washington Times Foundation
The American Constitution Committee
The American Leadership Conference

5. Teaching and Practice of Family Values

As we all know, the restoration of the ideal family means everything to True Parents. It is the core of their life's work and the unending content of Father's teaching. Families are the dwelling place of God's love, and the place where people learn the basic patterns of living an upright and positive life.

But the family is not an isolated and self-centered entity. Father teaches that the family should be dedicated to serving the welfare of the society, nation, and world. No one applies this concept more fully than Father and Mother, and as such their dedication to the world mission has entailed an enormous sacrifice for their children. Sadly, problems can arise from this, and have. Still, Father and Mother did their very best to love and educate their family, even while they devoted themselves sacrificially to their world mission. Despite difficulties, they are a model couple in terms of living as True Parents for their own family and the world, and this remains as valid today as ever.

6. Lifestyle Issues

The property that houses Father and his family is owned by the Unification Church and serves primarily as a center for local, national and international conferences, and secondarily as housing for his large family and the conference center staff. The constant presence of church leaders and guests, at times numbering over 500, creates the very opposite of self-indulgence. Family members live without normal privacy enjoyed by others.

It is widely known that True Parents maintain a severe spiritual discipline, dedicating long hours in prayer and teaching and conducting a public ministry at great cost to themselves and their family.

Furthermore Unification doctrine has never encouraged poverty for its own sake. Father encourages members to develop their talents, and devote their blessings and prosperity sacrificially for the public good. He encourages his children to pursue their extraordinary talents, but this parental impulse is not limited to his children. Reverend Moon enthusiastically invests in ideas and projects arising among church members in many areas, ranging from performing arts, to fishing industries, technology, and manufacturing.

We think you will come across these themes generated by negative media and recognize where particular aspects of the above information are applicable. Even though this information, applied together with your own life of faith can help you to digest and respond to upcoming challenges, please always refer all media to Mr. Chris Corcoran, the official spokesperson of HSA Family Church headquarters. His phone number is 212-997-0050 x213; his fax is 212-719-4784; his e-mail is pr@hsanahq.org. As always we are praying for you and for all Blessed Families. Please continue to pray for one another. We fully anticipate that our faithful dedication to God will allow for this event, as with all things related to God, to work together for good.

God Bless You,
Sincerely,

Two seemingly small but important issues have been brought to my attention in relation to Hyun Jin Nim's September 9 letter to the membership.

First, Hyun Jin Nim was not speaking from his position as vice- president of FFWPUI. Hence the identification of his FFWPUI position in two places was a mistake. Also, since he was not speaking as an official representative of the church, we should not have utilized church letterhead.

Second, the more appropriate signature is with Hyun Jin Nim's last name, not with the honorific.

The following reflects these corrections. It is in the proper format, including a formal cover page. Please keep this set in your files and discard the previous one.

Dear brothers and sisters,

Greetings in True Parents' name. I would like to express my gratitude for your life of ongoing sacrifice for the sake of God and True Parents.

No one can deny that we are working through a terrible tragedy for Hyo Jin hyung and hence for our entire family.

18. Speech to the Second Generation

Hyun Jin Moon
May 29, 1996

What do you want me to talk about today? Let me see your hand. For those who have seen me for the first time, raise your hand. For those who have seen the member of True Family for the first time, raise your hand. What shall I speak about today? [About the True Parents.] Really? I will also have to speak about that. [Laughter.] Which subject would you like me to speak about the most? Those who gathered here today, how many are the high school students? Raise your hand. The rest are college students? How many are blessed? Raise your hand.

I'll talk about inheriting vertical tradition. Being Koreans you must understand the vertical tradition. Yes or no? [Yes.] So what exactly is the vertical tradition? What is the vertical tradition? [It is Heavenly Father's Tradition.] [It is the victorious realm of the True Parents.] [It is the relationship between parents and children.] Yes, all of that is the vertical tradition. But what I want to speak about today the most is the context of the vertical tradition within the context of the restorational providence. To understand the meaning of the vertical tradition within the context of the restorational providence, you have to go back to the beginning of the human history. We have to examine the first human family. I know most of you study the principle very hard, so you must know chapter one by heart. The Principle of Creation.

If we didn't have the fall, the human fall, you wouldn't really have a need for any other lesson than the chapter one, that which is taught in the chapter one, the principle of the creation. Because in that chapter we realize what is Gods expectation for mankind. If you cannot understand this concept, then you can understand it in terms of your relationship with your parents. When we are born in this world, they have so much expectation of what you should accomplish or what you should do in your future. Just as is the case with our parents, God also had expectations. God also had that much expectation for mankind.

Of course now we face many challenges in our lives because history has progressed for more than the 6.000 biblical years. But back then it was very simple. All Adam and Eve had to do was to maintain the life of absolute faith, absolute obedience and absolute love to Heaven Father. But in the bible we have learned that Adam and Eve had strayed away from Heavenly Father. What is the condition in which we can say: Oh Adam and Eve did not follow expectation of God and strayed away from the heaven father? In the Garden of Eden God gave Adam and Eve only one command: Do not eat of that fruit of the tree of knowledge of Good and Evil. Of course you realize, because of the principle, because of the education that you've received as blessed children and as members of the Unification Church. We realized that the fruit was a symbolic fruit that meant sexual relationship between a man and a woman. Within the Garden there was freedom, but do not eat the fruit of tree of knowledge of Good and Evil, that was just one command that God has given to mankind at that time. Of course Adam and Eve did not follow that command, yes? And they fell. So what does that mean for Adam and Eve? We can come to some conclusions.

Adam and Eve were not perfect. If they were perfect, then they would not have fallen. It is the logical conclusion. Is it or not? If you were a perfect being, then you're under the absolute dominion of God. Then how can you be in the position to fall? So they must have been in the developmental stage. That's why we can come to the conclusion that Adam and Eve must have been in the growth period. They must have been in their teenage years, just developing, just beginning to understand Heavenly Father. Think about it. Right now True father is talking about, especially for membership, also 2nd generation, the importance of the foundation of absolute faith, the importance of absolute obedience and the importance of absolute love. In that time of development if Adam and Eve had maintained that kind of foundation of absolute faith in God, even though they did not know any better, they would not have fallen. Even if they had not known all things, they would not have fallen. If they had maintained the foundation of absolute faith, maintained the foundation of absolute obedience and maintained the foundation of true love, they would not have fallen. So we can see that even in the beginning of human history that there was flaw there. It was because they didn't have this kind of foundation that we see failure over and over and over again all throughout human history. Think about that.

When you were growing up, many of you had your parents and your parents told you to study hard, to take care of your brothers and sisters, and to listen to your parents' word. Why do they educate you like this? Why do they have all this type of expectations for you? At that time, when you were still teenagers you didn't understand why your parents were telling to do all these things. Think about it. If you want to go out with your friends and you have to stay at home and take care of your younger brother or sister, how much pain in the butt that is. Or how about study? All your friends want to go out and play but your parents told you to stay home and study. You didn't know why your parents told you to do these things, did you? As you grew up you realized they were telling you these things because of your well being. They recognized that for you to do bigger things you need to have a foundation. You need to have a foundation for preparation. As you grow up you start to realise these things. Think about the children in the United State. They don't listen to their parents. They don't listen to their elders. They only listen to their peers. And look what type of people they are becoming. America has a really sad future because of the younger generation now. Is that true or not? I have lived in America for a long time, so I know this very well. Those kids have no desire. Because they have no roots, they are continually being shaken back and forth. Root, or that kind of vertical tradition, is that important. You know this very well, do you not? Should I continue at this point? You are all smart people, so you will know these things very well. Right?

As you grow older you realize why your parents have raised you that way, why your parents have emphasized to study hard, why your parents have emphasized to take care of your younger brothers and sisters, and why your parents have emphasized why you have to do certain things. But at that time you did not understand. But because you're Korean kids and in Korea we value the vertical tradition, you followed your parents anyway. Isn't that right? Think about Adam and Eve. At that time Heavenly Father only gave one commandment. Maybe in your household you have many different kind of commandments your parents have given you. But Heavenly Father gave only one commandment to Adam and Eve. Why did they fall? But we already came to the conclusion that they did not substantiate the foundation of absolute faith, they did not substantiate the foundation of absolute obedience, and they did not substantiate the foundation of absolute love or true love. With whom? With Heavenly Father.

At that time we realized Adam and Eve and Heavenly Father were not alone, that there was a third party, that tempted Adam and Eve away from Heavenly Father. That was an archangel. If you read Genesis story very carefully, it goes like this: God told Adam and Eve not to eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. But then, what Lucifer did was he tempted Eve by saying: No. What God said is not true. What Heavenly Father said was if you eat of that fruit, then you shall die. But because Adam and Eve were still very young, they did not understand what Heavenly Father meant by death. They thought that death was physical death. They did not realize that death was spiritual death. Just like in many ways you're very naive to a way of heaven. The spirit world is out there. To you what seems the most scary? What seems the most unknown? It's the end of your physical life. In the same way they were very naive to the way of spirit world. That's why we can say that Adam and Eve were immature. They were too naive. So they believed that Heavenly Father talked about physical death, not spiritual death. So Satan said: No, you shall not die even if you eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. You shall live and you'll have the power to know all things. So what Satan said to Adam and Eve, is that lying to Adam and Eve? He was saying the truth. It was enough. But what did Satan know? He knew what God's expectation was for Adam and Eve. And he purposely utilized their naivete to tempt them away from Heavenly Father. In other words Satan knew when God said: "You shall die." Satan knew that God was talking about spiritual death. But he also knew that Adam and Eve did not know that God was talking about spiritual death. Adam and Eve thought that God was talking about physical death. From this relationship did Satan lie to Adam and Eve? No. But he knew the expectation of God and purposely connived to make things so Adam and Eve could not follow Heavenly Father, would not follow Heavenly Father. So that is the history of temptation. One of the reasons why the religious side has always walked the very difficult course and in many ways they were persecuted: Oh you're liars, you don't really care about human beings, it is because of this. There is some truth element to that. But these accusations are coming without an understanding of Heavenly Father and Heavenly Fathers Will. Because of this the history of restoration has been complicated and difficult.

In the beginning of human history all the elements that we see today had already been initiated. So many times you hear Parents talking about what God's tactic is, what God's strategy for restoration is always to be hit first and then to have dominion. Yes? But Satan's strategy is always to attack first and then lose his foundation. Why does God's strategy have to be like that? Restorational providence is not something that happens immediately. It's progression in time. You hear Parents talk about investment, investment and investment. The meaning of investment is that you are doing something now for the sake of the future. So if you see the restorational providence as the progression in time, then you recognize what happens now will have some repercussion later on. God's strategy has always to be hit first. Why? Because eventually the truth will come out through time and through history. Why? Because Satan is so smart he knows God's expectation well and he knows how to manipulate facts at this point. So you cannot argue with him at this time. You have to let history flow. But through history you cannot run away. The truth is always revealed through history. So think about it. Adam and Eve fell in the beginning of history. Was that the end of human history? Answer. It wasn't the end of human history. It was the beginning of restorational history. So we can see how Heavenly Father uses history to re-indemnify the failures of the past. In this usage of history the strategy of being hit first and then restoring based upon being hit first is what works. Is that the truth or not?

So why I am talking about this. Why did I talk about the first family and how Satan tempted Adam and Eve away from God. Why did I focus on those three elements that Father has been emphasizing so much nowadays, the foundation of absolute faith, the foundation of absolute obedience and true love. Why? All of you are very smart. I'm sure that you can start to see the connection. You cannot see the connection? Can you see the connection? You cannot see the connection? The foundation of the absolute faith as I emphasized in the beginning was the condition that Adam and Eve should have had. If they had reinforced that foundation within themselves, they would not have fallen. In many ways in your life of faith you get tempted a lot. Do you not? Your friends tell you. Oh. You can drink. You can smoke. Oh, there is nothing wrong with it. It is not a sin. You won't go to hell if you smoke or drink. What they are saying is true. In other words if we judge what we should do or should not do based upon what we perceived to be the truth at this point and some of things that they say you should do, you can justify your own mind you should do, right? Or let's talk about the blessing. This time, 3.6 million couple Blessing, many of you're probably going to go, those who are not blessed here today. But you've seen your older brothers and sisters not go to Blessing or you've seen them break their Blessing. So in your mind you say, oh since I've seen that kind of example and because there was no harsh repercussion on those individual, maybe that is OK. In other words there is many kind of condition that you can see in your lives that eat away your life of faith. When you see that, you say: Oh they did it, so maybe I can do it. Or what Father says here and that kind of standards he says is so high and it doesn't fit with reality. So, maybe I don't have to listen to everything. Or True Parents are superman and superwoman and I am me, so I don't have to really live up to that kind of standard that they trying to live up to in their whole life. All those things you are saying, are true, are they not? Why? There are no breaks in blessed couple marriages? It exists. There are no blessed children that have difficulties? There are blessed children that have difficulties. Our Church doesn't have any difficulties? There are difficulties. So all of these comments you say is true. Our movement is going through difficulty. Well, that's true too. So what am I getting at here? What's the point that I am trying to make here? Whether that is true or not, that is not what matters. The way that you have to see things is: Do I want to live in accordance to Gods ideal or do I want to follow whatever I perceive to be the case right now? Even though the reality around me might not be perfect, you have to make that kind of determination to want to follow or live up the ideal set by True Parents. In order to do that you have to have the foundation of absolute faith, you have to have the foundation of absolute obedience; you have to have the foundation of absolute love.

All those things that you might see that tempt you away not to follow are exactly like the temptation that the Satan gave Adam and Eve. What Satan said to Adam and Eve was true too, right? The difference was he knew what God expected and he purposely brought Adam and Eve away from Gods expectation. So now to what you might see, all the thoughts you might have all the difficulty that you might see not to follow absolutely the path that Parents have laid out for you. All that kind of different temptation and many of that kind false you see are true, are they not? They do exist. But then you still have to maintain that kind of foundation within yourself. Through that Satan is trying to tempt you to not follow the course prescribed by Parents. Through all those different type of things you might perceive, all the difficulties and all the different kind of things Satan is using that as a tool to make you not follow absolutely Parents direction. Just like Adam and Eve Satan also knows expectation that parents have for each and every one of you. That is why you have to have the foundation of absolute faith, the foundation of absolute obedience the foundation of true love. Even though I tell you this I know it is not easy for you to believe. Especially when you see your friends go to work in a company and maybe living a little better life than you, seeing your parents live a life as ministers in a church, living a very poor life, a life of poverty for 40 years, and then eventually being told to go to the tribal messiahship with no foundation of their own, when you see your parents go through that, you might think: Oh what has Unification Church done for me and my family with 20 years or 30 years investment of my parents life? I am sure that some of you think like that. I am sure your parents think like that too. That is the self-pity.

All these kind of complaints that you might have might be true. But then you have to ask yourself, are these complaints leading me to follow absolutely the direction of Parents have said or is it leading me away. You have to ask yourself that question. One thing that you did not realise is that the investment that your parents have made, the investment that you should make will not be wasted. If your parents did not understand this, then they don't know what they are talking about. From a restorational providential viewpoint nothing was wasted. Look at the principle of the universe. There is no waste in the universe. Every time there is a force, there is a counteracting force that creates a balance. If you have low pressure, then air will come to that low pressure and fill it up. If you have slope, then water will flow down the slope. In other words, the principles of the universe are such that nothing is wasted. How about the restorational providence?

Do you think the effort and the investment that you made would ever be wasted? No. Yet if you do not value the importance of the investment that you make, then whatever great riches, and I am not talking about monetary, but the riches in Heaven that your family is bound to receive you will not receive, if you do not value the investments. Why? I explained that Heavenly Father moves through time and history. The restorational providence is the movement in time and history. That is why especially when I look at the Korean Church today we are at a crossroad. We are at the crossroad. In many ways this movement, the Church in Korea, is being shaken and rattled. Yet how are you going to receive this changes? Well, that is not a question that I only ask you but I ask every single member in Korea. That means I even ask this question to your parents. You have conscience too. If you have been trained and educated by Parents, then you should have a conscience that truly knows what is right.

If you cannot see the value of the investment that you have made in your life's work of sacrificing everything, that you have made for the sake of God's providence, if you cannot see the value in that, then you are not in the position to receive whatever riches befall upon your family in the future. Think about it in these terms. Maybe you can understand. Maybe somebody gives you stock of a small little company, you think, oh, look at that company. This is worth nothing. I have other friends who have stock in a bigger company. You threw that away but eventually that company becomes, let say it was Apple computer company. 20 years ago it was nothing. The person that threw that away is the biggest stupid person in the world because that eventually became the most expensive stock in the stock market. 20 years ago did you think about the computers? Did you have a dream? Did you even have a concept that you will have portable computers in every single home? Did you have that kind of concept? Did you have the idea of Internet? The reason why that technology exists is because there were several crazy people who said that in the future 20 years from now you will have a computer in every single home and they will all be connected by the World Wide Web. 20 years ago who would have believed that. The idiots! Personal computers now have more memory and more power than some of the computers about 20 years ago that the military used. They were several million dollars. Now you can buy them for two thousand dollars that have more power and more memory. Who would believe that? Think about it. If you look at history you will realise all the different kind of changes, technological advancements happen because people made investments. Do you understand me? Time, energy, blood, sweat and tears. Do you understand me? Many times they were ridiculed as being crazy, stupid. Shouldn't go that kind of route. You think those people who engineer the growth of computer industry should not have made that investment? Was their investment wasted?

Those people who pioneered that industry, they did not received the fruits of the computer ages that we are receiving the fruit right now. They couldn't receive the fruit, but we've received the fruit, have we not? Through this example you can understand the meaning of the work that we are doing now, and this is ten times, a 100 times, a 1,000 times more important than let's say the computer industry. Do you think that all the effort that has been made will not be remembered in heaven? Of course it will be remembered. No investment that you make is wasted. So if your parents are that type of parents that complain and basically come to you and say: Oh, have pity on me. I've done all those kinds of things but what has the Church done for me? So what I want you to do is not to work for the Church anymore. I want you to go find your own business and make a good living for yourself. Those types of parents are no good.

If your parents are like that, then you should be in the position to educate them. You can talk to them clearly and look them straight into eyes and say: Think about what you are saying now. Are you willing to throw away all the years that you invested in this movement? With that comment you are making right now, be careful what you are saying. I can understand you might have some type of judge or resentment, but remember that investments are not wasted. Remember that the fruit for your soul eventually will have harvest. So wait for that harvest and that harvest will be the most valuable in all of history. Do you have the confidence to do this? Is what I am saying true or is it not true? Think about it. Please think about it carefully. I meet many people who are bosses in companies. They have money, they have power and position, but it's all empty. They are not happy. Really they are not happy people.

You cannot find happiness through money, through power, through position, through authority. You cannot find happiness through these things. You cannot find happiness there. You can only find happiness when you live up to your responsibilities in the eyes of God. When is the person in the most miserable situation? When he or she was alone. When they are alone, they are in the most miserable situation. You always want some type of give and take. Where do you find the most satisfaction that kind of give and take that you have let's say comparatively do you find as much satisfaction as let's say give and take with a dog as you with another human being. How about husband and wife? Do you find that you find more satisfaction when having give and take with let's say dog than lets say your spouse? Why is that? Because human being have an infinite desire to embrace the biggest thing. We want to find an object that is on an equal level to us. You find satisfaction with an object that is on an equal level. That's why, if you go to university, professors only like those students that are very bright. They always talk to those students. Especially those who always challenge the professor. Why is that? Because among the students that professor realises, this person is the closest to me in my knowledge and in my erudition. The same is true for Heavenly Father. He finds the most satisfaction in those people that are closest to Him. They can understand Him the most. Just like that student that has a relationship with that professor, when you have that kind of stimulating relationship with the professor, let's say you are all students, you have that kind of stimulating relationship with the professor, you find happiness, you find pleasure in that moment, do you not? But think about Heavenly Father. He has all the infinite wisdom, all the infinite knowledge. He is the king of everything. So if you have that kind of give and take relationship with Heavenly Father, how much more fulfilling, how much more great that kind of foundation will be. That is why true happiness comes when you live in the course of God's Will and fulfil His expectation. Do you think so? Yes or no? Or are you just saying that? It looks like all of you want to go to sleep. Understanding this is important!

So it is very important to have the foundation of absolute faith, the foundation of absolute obedience, the foundation of true love. Those are the tools you will have to fight off all different kinds of temptation and walk the correct, right path. Your life will not be easy. I am not here to come and tell you that your life will be easy. Your life will be difficult. You will face many challenges. You will face many challenges in your life, but it's the decision that you make which will define what type of person you will become. With those three tools you should, you will not fall away. Remember there are always things you'll need to learn more about. You always want to gain more knowledge. You always want to have more position. You always want to have more money. You always want to have more authority. You always want to have more of those types of things. The thing that will be the most important and something that should be consistent in your life should be the life of absolute faith, the life of absolute obedience and the life of true love, and eventually if those things come to you, if you are blessed with those things, position, power, authority or not, then you will be in the position to really live up to the expectation of those blessings and use those blessings for the sake of Heavenly Father.

Being 2nd generation especially in Korea, many times you probably think that you are abandoned here in Korea. Do you feel like that? Please don't think like that. Everything that Father has been creating is for the sake of 2nd Generation. The time of 2nd generation is coming soon. That is why you have to start preparing yourself. But when I say preparation, I am not talking about going off and getting an MBA (Master of Business Administration) degree, doing things on your own, not being involved in Church activities. That's not what I'm talking about. I am talking about internal foundation. If you have the internal foundation, the physical blessing will naturally come. If you do not have the internal foundation, then blessing will not come to you. Regardless of how well you study, regardless of how well you perform and whatever secular activity blessing will not come to you. That's why I'm really emphasizing right now at this point, the foundation of absolute faith, the foundation of absolute obedience, the foundation of true love.

So all of you, who make a pledge to live up to those three qualities, raise your hand. Okay. So should I finish here or should I continue? [Please continue.] This is it. This is the essence that what I want to talk about today. That's it. It's that simple. If you have this kind of foundation, all the different kinds of knowledge that you want, the theological knowledge that you want, you will naturally start understanding it. Why? Because this is the true foundation that one has to have in order to gain inheritance. Think about Adam and Eve. They were not able to inherit all the blessing that Heavenly Father wanted to bestow upon them because they did not have this kind of foundation and eventually they passed away from Heavenly Father. So today we are talking about inheriting the vertical tradition. If you want to inherit the foundation that was set for you by the first generation, then you have to have these qualities, and truly you can be in the position to inherit. Without it you cannot. Since I don't know many of you and I don't know many of your concerns and worries, the thing that occupy you, I think I should stop here. Remember that those three things are very important.

So what should I talk about now? I have to leave tomorrow. Right now the reason why I came to Korea was to recruit several blessed children to work in UVG. Why did I come to recruit these 2nd generation blessed kids? If I had forgotten about you then I wouldn't have come here to Korea.

In the future you will have many of these kinds of opportunity. Don't listen to what you parents are saying. They tell you not to go to the Church course because it's a dead-end course; it's just a life of difficulty. Don't listen to them. Because the future is going to be different. The reason why they are saying that is because they don't know anything. You just wait ten years or twenty years from now. The Unification Church, you should be proud to say you are a Unification member, not only you should be proud, you will be proud. Those who have followed faithfully you'll be even more proud, you should be even more proud that you've followed faithfully even at that time of difficulty. You will see. You can hold me to that word. It will be like this in the future.

So in preparation for that kind of time you have to have the right kind of foundation of your own. Satan is going to do so many things to make you lose hope, lose faith, to go your own individual kind of course. Many times your parents will be your enemies, your brothers and sisters, your friends all will try to make you not go that kind of course. That's why you have to have these kinds of characteristics.

Anyway the reason why I came here was to recruit several Blessed kids to UVG. They will pioneer the course for the 2nd Generation in other types of organizations outside of Korea, organizations such as UVG. We have Seilo in America. We have many different kinds of organizations that Father has created. We have a worldwide foundation many of you probably don't know about. You'll have many different opportunities to be involved in these types of activities. The kids who will be given those kind of opportunities will only be those kids that live a life of faith, that have participated in Church activities. So even this time when I told those candidates to be picked to be interviewed I told specifically those kids who went through some level of formula course. That means right after college being involved in CARP or some type of Church activity. I wasn't impressed about kids who just went off to school to do their own thing and stuff like that. I wasn't impressed by that because I can find better people. The way I see it I don't need those kind of people. Going out into the world I can find more qualified people to work for me.

The reason why I make that kind of exception for blessed children is because you should be the people that live up to the ideals that Parents have set. That's why I make an exception for you kids. But if you don't live up to the ideals that Parents have set, then in my eyes you are no different from outside kids. Really there is no difference. So if there is no difference then I can find more qualified people in the outside world. Because of this you understand what I am telling you today. That kind of a time will come. If you and your parents are not able to have absolute faith, then blessing will not come to you. Especially, at the this time, when our movement is being accepted on a world-wide level you'll see quickly, you'll start seeing the changes in the world. Even all of our business organizations that we've started will be very successful, will be very prosperous. Think about how it looks like robbery, if you are one of those who always criticize, and all starts to be prosperous and you want to be involved in it, you'll be like a robber. That is why you need to lay a foundation at this time in your life.

Even my small little foundation such as the UVG, this company will become very prosperous. We've already been recognized in United States but we'll be recognized in the world soon. In ten years I've no doubt in my mind that it'll be one of the largest companies in the whole movement. But unlike any kind of company president, I don't really like business. If I were in charge of the UVG just for the sake of money, then I would not do it. Think about it regardless of how big I make these organizations, there is always going to be some organizations in the outside world just as big. Regardless of what type of profit I may be able to achieve there will always be some company that does better.

What's the only thing that makes UVG different from all the other companies in the outside world? That's because we want to play the providential restorational role. Without that then the UVG is just like any other company. That's one of reason why I especially developed the corporate culture, although 80% of people are outside people. I emphasize principle. So even outside people, they have some understanding of principle because our corporate culture is set up that way. 80% of the people are outside people, and only 20% are members. But our corporate philosophy is centered around the principle, so everybody has to accept that. The UVG is not going to be the only organization that turns out like this. All of Father's organizations are going to be like that. And you are going to be proud to be Unification Church members representing the Unification Church, representing Father. Do you want to be a participator or a spectator? [A participator.] Then build your own foundation. [Yes.] Because you are all smart people you will do this, right? This is the reason that I came to Korea. To meet everyone here. And tomorrow I am going to Japan to meet the Assistant Minister of Agriculture.

So please understand what I have told you today and prepare yourselves. The time of Second Generation is coming. But you have to build a good foundation. I don't need the kind of people who come and go and just do as they please. I don't need those who do not believe in the Unification Church. Think about it. Those people are so pitiful. In the eyes of Heavenly Father they are so pitiful. Just going back and forth without knowing where they are heading. Especially at this time, after all that kind of foundation Father has made, especially at this time, this is not good. We are just at the gates of Promised Land, so to speak. So you have to prepare yourselves. And if your parents tell you not to do Church work, then don't listen to them, okay? [Yes.]

So what time is it now? [It is ten minutes past nine.] Oh, I'm late. [Laughter.] I have to know you more, if I want give you more content. I don't know you so well. And you don't know me so well. Even with this, this is good enough to digest. Okay, so let's finish here. [Thank you very much.]

17. God's Day Midnight Address

"This is a short excerpt from the midnight address given on Jan. 1, 1993 in the Grand Ballroom of the World Mission Center in New York City."

This is truly a great period in the history of our movement and also in the history of humanity. As you know, Father has shown us, through his untiring dedication and sacrifice, a testament to the devotion he has for Heavenly Father, the devotion he has to fulfilling his responsibility as True Parents of all mankind. Now we, as their sons and daughters, have to inherit that type of commitment, that type of dedication to mission, to our purpose.

As you know, life is nothing without purpose. If you had no purpose in life, what would you do? What value would your life have? Because man has purpose and that purpose has been ordained and given by God, we have to be responsible. We have to be responsible to fulfill that purpose. Now what was that purpose which God ordained for man? What is that purpose for humanity which is given by God? It's time for a Divine Principle lecture. (Laughter)

When God first created Adam and Eve, He must have had a purpose. For everything that we see in creation, there is a reason for it to exist. Everything in creation is interconnected and is working in harmony. If you take one piece of the creation out, it causes an imbalance. So through creation, we can realize that God always has a purpose for everything He creates.

The same is true for human beings: God had a purpose. What was that purpose? That purpose was to be a receptacle of love, to be an object of love. When you observe the creation, everything exists in the pair system. Why is it created that way? We see male and female animals, we see male and female parts on plants, we see positive and negative charges on the atomic level. Always we see this type of pair system. Why is the pair system necessary?

Just by talking?

Let me ask you a question: can you consummate an act of love by talking to yourself? Can you say, "I love myself," and then just feel fulfilled through reciprocal action? Maybe your two hands can say, "I love you" to each other. But will you find true fulfillment from that type of give and take action? No, and that is why God created everything in the pair system, where one side represents this aspect [the man's side] and the other side which represents this aspect [the women's side] and they are totally different.

Through the reciprocal action which exists between those totally different entities, you can find a formula for love. Therefore, when we see the creation, it is based on the pair system. Even within our own individual selves, we see the pair system, don't we? We have subjective and objective characteristics. We have spirit and body, which is another type of subject and object relationship.

Why did God create the whole universe according to this pair system? It was for the consummation of love. Everything, all of creation, can be a reflection of love.

So from the creation, we can see that everything was made in the pair system. Why did God create all the creation that way? It was so that everything could be a reflection of love. As our Parents have come here many times and have testified to you, it is very hard to consummate love unless you have an object which can reciprocate that love.

So from the beginning of creation, God wanted to consummate this love. Even though His being also had pair systems, our Heavenly Father needed an object. Within yourself, you are a reflection of love because you are built on the pair system concept. You have positive and negative atoms that make up your whole body, you have positive and negative aspects of your character. You might have passionate aspects, and at other times you might be very quiet and reticent, even you men. And you also have aggressive, assertive qualities. These are positive and negative kinds of qualities. Your aggressive qualities symbolize and reflect the subjective characteristics, that which is more domineering.

Then those reticent, more quiet characteristics represent the objective characteristics. So even within human beings, if you look at the whole spectrum of qualities within human existence, we see the concept of a pair system being displayed.

God made us so that we can become a reflection of His love. However, even though you have those kinds of qualities, it is very hard for you to reciprocate those qualities within yourself alone. As an individual entity, you need some object to relate with. Therefore, God also has his individual nature and even though He was the reflection or essence of love, He also needed an object with which to relate. Therefore, the purpose of man's creation was for man to become the true inheritor or the object of love. That's why God created Adam and Eve.
