32. World CARP Convention - Closing Address

Hyun Jin Moon
January 30, 2001

Good morning everyone! Why are we meeting together at the very early hour of four in the morning? Before we leave each other, we need to bring our CARP Conference and Convention back to the root of who we are. All of the things we have experienced together in the last few days don't mean anything if we are not rooted in the will of God. Without that root, we cannot be the people who fulfil the work of God's providence.

Last year I went on a world tour to Korea, Japan, Philippines, Thailand, Taiwan, Russia, Moldova, Hungary and Germany. There was one significant country missing, and that was the USA. Therefore let me remind you why the theme of that tour was Inheritance and Development. It was because there was a tension between the first and second generation. By second generation I mean all young people not just Blessed Children. The first generation thought they had their own path and the second generation felt they had a separate path. Each felt they could do without the other, and even discard the other.

Our movement has a long history of sacrifice. Our movement is built on the root of tears, blood and sacrifice. I started off my inaugural tour by asking if it was God's intention to have True Parents walk the course of the wilderness for 40 years, restoring all 6000 years of human history? That was not God's plan. He had already prepared a plan through worldwide Christianity. It had been prepared for 6,000 years. I explained about the Old Testament Age and the New Testament Age, and how that foundation was lost.

In 1945 history was undoubtedly at an inflection point.. After the war, there was a feeling of the real possibility of global unity. The UN was founded, and America was the most powerful nation. Christianity was strong. At that time, True Parents should have stood on the national foundation of Korean Christianity and the International foundation of American Christianity. If that had happened, the Kingdom of Heaven could have been built in seven years, by 1952. However, a critical failure took place and the wilderness course began.

Now we have entered the settlement age, the time of settlement when once again we can lay the foundation to build God's substantial kingdom. Father has spent more than 50 years speaking about True Families. If you read the Hoon Dok Hae books all the way from the early speeches in the 1950s up until just yesterday, you will see that Father is always talking about the same topics. He always talks about the relationships between men and women, relations in the family and with God. True Parents recognize that it is the relationships within the family that are the root of all other relations.

From the very beginning God lost the ideal of the true family. Even the original Divine Principle focused on just the reciprocal pair relations on the individual level, such as mind and body, myself and True Parents, myself and God. One consequence of that individual focus was that people could say that they had faith in True Parents but not in True Family. Now it is time to focus on the full four position foundation. It is through the family that the substantial lineage can be created, not just from the relationship with God between individual men and women, but the substantial relationship though a family.

God needed to create a lineage on earth. That's why he created man and woman to grow to maturity and begin a family through marriage. Adam and Eve, standing on left and right, should pass the vertical tradition coming from God down to their children. Why is this so important? Because in the family you have true love, life and lineage.

After the fall, all of human history was a history to change blood lineage and ownership. Satan took away Eve who was to be through Adam the wife of God. She went away taking the seed of the enemy in her womb. How difficult would it be for God to see that child when he was born? Every time he saw that child he would be reminded of the blood lineage and life of his enemy. This was the analogy Father used. To restore this you have to build a substantial family. It is time now that the Cain type and Abel type children come together. When that relationship is correct it can unite all our family. We have to stand as one family before the world if we are to build Gods substantial kingdom.

Why is it then that until now we focused only on the individual? As I said, the Divine Principle speaks mostly on the individual level, because history until now was a history of salvation on the individual level. Man and woman fell on the individual level before they could stand as true men and women. That's why the question of mind/body unity has been the fundamental challenge of the spiritual life. Father asks all the time, and asked again yesterday, "Do you have real mind/body unity?"

Recently I was sitting in one of the classes at UTS on the topic of "Building True Family Values" We were talking about how one develops moral character. Today many psychologists and sociologists are following a model of moral reasoning being developed through stages. Kohlberg's theory of four moral stages is an example. This theory says in essence that there are different moral choices to be made at each level of growth, and that the moral paradigm used at each stage is different and therefore relative.

I challenged the professor that this theory implies that all morality is relative. There is no absolute right and wrong. "How is it then," I asked, "That the great figures of history faced moral dilemmas with absolute consistency?" They were absolutely clear about right and wrong and the way they should go. On the cross, Jesus was willing to accept the vertical path prescribed for him. He realized that it was a difficult course, but he was willing to accept it.

I mention this because the so-called moral authorities of today are not authorities at all. They are confused and their theories only reflect the mind/body disunity in themselves. Moral values do not lie in the nice rhetoric and explanations, the graphs and the rational process. They lie in the heart, based on experience. They affect us all wherever we come from, Asian, black or white. Regardless of all the cultural differences, there are universal moral standards that affect all of us.

What are the fundamental and universal values that everyone shares? Take any man anywhere, he is always the son, husband, father, brother of someone. And any woman, be she a Miss America, a housewife, a professor from the Philippines, is the daughter, wife sister or mother of someone. Regardless of where we come from, we are the sons and daughters, brothers and sisters husbands and wives and fathers and mothers of someone. These familial relationships are universal. However, there is a problem with these relationships in every culture today.

The gap between generations is a result of the conflict between people and their parents and grandparents, and the failure of that relationship. The struggles in society between men and women start in the family. The failure to create true brotherly relations in the family is expressed in war and struggle. The breakdown of the family is because of the failure of parents to love children.

Many people say, "Well, talking about ideal families is great, but what is the connection to building a world of peace." My reply is this. The family unit is the basic building block of any social order. If there are flaws in the basic building block, then the end product will be flawed. If you fix the flaw in the building blocks then the end product, will be OK. Somehow the DNA, the basic molecule was flawed and the result is totally the opposite of what God had intended. If we can recreate the original building block we can recreate God's ideal.

Everyone wants love, but there are so many different standards of love. We have to recognize that. We do not share the love between husband and wife with the children- that is incest. We do not share the horizontal love of bothers and sisters between parents and children, which is vertical.

There is a gap between the generations. The older generation says, "Young people today have no standards." Every generation has been the same since the beginning! Abba is 81 and his life represents many generations. Don't you think he feels that way about every generation? I am only 32, but I see today's kids and think, "What planet did they come from, they have no respect!" I would say that all of this is because of the ambiguity of the standard of love between generations.

Likewise, you could say that the confusion in sexual relationships comes from a loose and ambiguous understanding of what the relationship between husband and wife is, leading to things like homosexuality. Yesterday Father said that homosexuality was Satan's tool to destroy humanity. Why? You cannot create any vertical standard with homosexual relations, and there can be no procreation of the next generation. Therefore it means the end of that generation.

That kind of relationship is worse than even that of the animals. The basic theory of evolution speaks of the survival of the fittest and the strong urge for reproduction. That drive creates competitiveness among the males to pass on the genes. Even in the animal kingdom the relationship between male and female to pass on the lineage is very clear.

I see this myself when I go out hunting. All of my life I have loved nature, and my true church is God's creation. That's where I find peace, solace, and internal peace and purification, when I am thousands of miles away out in the boondocks. Right now, my playground is Alaska. If I had lived 2000 years ago I would have been a wilderness person who stayed away for 40 days. Who knows I might do that by taking 40 days away from CARP! What if I smelled and was dirty, or away so long my language skills deteriorated, would you still come to hear me speak? You are crazy people.

How about the relationship between brothers? When Father met all the great leaders in Washington DC last week and gave the speech there, he spoke of all conflict as being at root a brotherly struggle, an extension of the Cain and Abel struggle that started in the first family. The inability to love each our brothers is the cause. Warfare represents the two camps, one representing God and the other Satan. Among these, it is those who attacked first who represent the evil ideas. That's why the struggle between nations can only be resolved by finding the true relationship between brothers and sisters, brothers and brothers. Where are we going to get that knowledge?

I have been studying at UTS and now I realize why I did not take theology in college! In the USA you don't have to decide a major until the 3rd year. When I was a college student, I asked Father what should I major in? He said History, Philosophy or Theology, and I chose History. Now at UTS I am taking courses in theology, including Christian theology. Now I see why it is so challenging for Christians to accept Fathers message!

This is the time that religious people should be open minded, not dogmatic and not doctrinaire. Jesus was not a theologian, he was a man who wanted to build God's kingdom. Many of the troubles today come from the ideas of Christology about the role of the messiah and the person of Christ. If these are the conclusions and results, maybe we should ask different questions.

Today people are looking differently at the question of Christology. In New Testament studies we talk a lot about the search for the historical Jesus. Was he apocalyptic, or a sage or wisdom teacher? The apocalyptic view says that Jesus died on the cross as a condition for bodily resurrection. The wisdom view is that Jesus was a philosopher king, But does reason lead us divinity? If you look at the Bible it is full of paradoxes and 'unreasonable' sayings. There is a component of faith and of heart that leads people to God's Ideal will beyond mere reason. This is the beginning of religious life, the relationship between man and his heavenly father.

At the Washington Prayer Luncheon, the president of the Billy Graham Association said that the thing that Billy Graham was most proud of in his life was not any aspect of his great worldwide ministry but his relationship with God. Many religious teachers said the same. Reason is not the way that leads us to God. It is time for us to rethink the theology and see Jesus from a different point of view.

This goes to the question of concept and experience. How does one learn, through experience or abstraction, or both? As humans we can abstract great concepts and principles out of thin air. We can use pure mathematics to learn about the relationship between stars in the universe that we cannot experience directly. However, all theories are just a theory until they are proved in the physical word.

When it comes to moral lessons and learning about God, it is experience and not abstraction that teaches us the real way. Experience is the source that leads us to true knowledge. Reason stands in the subordinate position. True love, true life and true lineage should not be an abstraction but a substantial reality that we experience on a daily basis. We manifest true love not by thinking about it, but by practicing it on a daily basis as a son, husband and father. This is how we get the substantial knowledge of True Love.

At various conferences, I have told many VIPs that the model of the family is the model for world peace. You will not find solutions that work from discussions about economics and politics. Those things change very quickly. However, the fundamental relations in the family will not change. The family is the place where the mature people emerge and leave a legacy behind.

If those people can create a relationship of True Love in the family it can be used elsewhere as a model. Through the family the individual can know the secrets of the man and woman relationship. If you are a man, you must understand the world of women not from a political perspective but through the eyes of love. If we really did that would we see all the conflicts we see today? No.

We can solve the problems that nations and cultures have against each other based on the model of true brotherly love learned in the family. This is knowledge that is more powerful and more useful than anything you might find in a book. In the family you learn to look at other people through the eyes of love. That is why it is the family that is the basic building block of human society and has the key to all the secrets, all the hopes that people have had since the beginning of history.

Let me ask our brother here a question. When you were a baby, did you know what the meaning of your life was? Did you even know if you are a boy or a girl? No, you only know what to put in your mouth! Today you are a gentleman, but everyone was a baby once, weren't they?

Later on you realized that there was an expectation of being a boy. You probably first realize you are a boy by looking at your sexual organ. Did you ever think, 'Why I am a boy? Why do I have something dangling here and the other half the human race has nothing?' One day you realize that you are different and there must be some purpose.

The moment you realize that you are different, you realize there must be a meaning. You don't worry about big philosophical questions, but you do wonder about the meaning of the sexual organs, They are the means to create true love and lineage in the creation of ideal families. You are smart. You are the product of all the ideals and cultures that came before you, but also of barriers that they bring. Patriotism in one sense can mean ethnocentric in another. People who have a strong cultural heritage may love their culture and language but be unable to embrace other culture and languages. If we shed all of that baggage, to look across the street, nation and world through the eyes of true love, all we should see is true love, life and lineage and no other distinctions.

I spoke the other day to the President of the Comoros. We will have a CARP chapter there soon. In the future we will have a CARP convention and symposium every year. Where will it be held? I want your feedback because it has to better, more effective. The guiding purpose is to make members effective in the field as leaders. A leader takes initiative, is responsible and accountable. A follower does none of these things. We want to give all of you the tools to become leaders. We have to create the curriculum to become leaders.

I want the things that are taught here at the CARP Conference to be applicable in the field. That is one of the key purposes of the Convention. The second part is that we can show to the world and to ourselves the international identity of CARP. It is a chance for all of us to see CARP Members from other nations and can practice the ideas of true love.

Is this an idea that is only attractive to Unificationists! No. We do not have a monopoly on the message of the family. But we have a message that anyone can use. I speak to many VIPS and I speak as frankly as I do to you. They realize that all the problems come from the breakdown of the family, and there is no true model. But we have it in our movement and we have it in practice. Amen or No men? Shall I teach you all now, or over many years? You say you want it all now but if you get too much your back may fold onto the floor!

If you remembered nothing else about this conference remember that the building of Gods substantial kingdom comes from the building true families. We should see everything through the eyes of love. True Parents were able to overcome so much adversity. From the beginning Father was kicked out by the Christian community and was left with no foundations. Most men would have crumbled under that situation. Many people lose their faith in the time of death where it looks like that they are losing everything. But despite the misunderstanding, persecution and tribulation True Parents continued.

No parents would abandon their loving child, although sometime it may seem that way to the child. Did you have such a situation within your life of faith? Father told me that in his life, every time God promised him a great blessing, God sent him to prison. Every time! That's how Father went to prison six times in his life, the first time when he was your age. As a human being, don't you have similar experiences? Be like Father and never quit. I once told Father after studying his life, "Every time you went to prison, our movement grew." This is parallel to how Christianity grew. Persecution was intense. Martyrs died to share their faith. That sacrifice came long before all of Christian theology.

At Danbury the whole religious community came forward and told the government, "You are wrong." The ministers who came yesterday to welcome Father came first from the Danbury time. The campaign manger for George Bush who organized the conference was also there. Also the ministers who led George Bush to be a believer were there. Another man was there who will soon get a cabinet level position. All the different denominations and religions were there.

Let me tell you a story about that meeting in Washington. After giving his speech, the ambush media came to Robert Schuler, the famous TV evangelist, and asked 'Do you know this event is sponsored by Rev. Moon?' He said yes, and moreover it is time we rethink our position on Sun Myung Moon. This came from the mouth of the most prominent religious leader in the USA.

After that, Father was in his room reading Hoon Dok Hae when many VIPs came up to greet him. There were no chairs and so they sat on the floor. When God looks at us, does he recognize positions like president or vice-president? God does not see all that. He sees all humanity as his children and he sees through the eyes of love, not through external means. Look at each other and see how different we all are from each other.

Some people say that to be united we should all be the same, same hair, same skin color, but the beauty comes because we are true people. We are different. Some of us want to move mountains, and others just to still the soul. Through True Love you can see true greatness. God does not value things like power, money and knowledge. God needs families under his domain, true families. At the end of the Hoon Dok Hae, a successful presidential campaign manager came up to Father and said, 'I read Inquisition and I want to apologize to you on behalf of my nation for the way you were mistreated in my country' At Danbury, people started to realize the value of Father's word.

If Father had reacted or argued with God he might not have gone through all the difficulties he has until now. Yet he persevered in obedience to God. The leaders have to know this. This is the settlement age, the 7th millennium from the Biblical view, the 21st Century. It is not every day that history reaches such a critical point. This is a period to rectify all that went wrong in the beginning. The solution is the creation of ideal families. We came so early in the morning because we want to align ourselves with this message to position ourselves to be able to build a new world order, a revolution of heart. If that is the spirit you take, nothing can stop it!

Think of the dream we have for liberating God, humanity and True Parents. If we are to bring people under the dominion of God, True Parents life and lineage is fundamental. This is our mission, Amen. We will not go quietly into the night. We will rant and rave and shake the world until it recognizes that we have come at a time in history where we will build the kingdom. We will take this message to every campus and every street corner. Do you have that dream? If you do, there is nothing you cannot accomplish. Remember Father. You have been promised blessing, but there will be times that you do not see that. There will be difficulties instead. If we remember Father's course, we will overcome those difficulties and build that ideal world.

This year, I am going to be doing another world tour. Don't think that CARP is for young people who are isolated from the rest of society. I know people were dying to get out of CARP, thinking 'I'll do my 2 or 3 years, and then get out' Is that what you think? Is that your view? To serve your time and get out? Now there is a change, miraculously people want to stay. CARP members of the past who are 40 or 50 want to come back but there is not enough room!

The power and commitment is here in CARP. If the vision and ideals are in CARP, do we just exist for ourselves, or do we want to go out and share our blessing with the world? Invest, forget, invest and forget is the message! Let's rock the nations, rock their world! Amen? I want you not see CARP just as it is today but to see the potential for greatness. Do I look like a person who settles for mediocrity?

What is the motto for World CARP? There is no such thing as number two, only number one! Why? Because God deserves Number One! Why? Because True Parents deserve number one!

CARP is an organization that strives for excellence. We will liberate God and True Parents. This convention is not an event in isolation. I have been kicking the butts of these ajoshi, getting them to understand the vision I have for CARP. You cannot carry the baggage of old CARP into new CARP! CARP is going to revive the world! We will take that spirit around the world, spreading faster than a contagious disease. Old members have a lot of children and worry about their families, as well as many other things. Young people have the capacity and freedom to focus and to propel Gods work forward at light speed. The world of progress is not going to be made by political and religious leaders, but on the grass roots level in every town and city. This will be grassroots-based, rising from the energies and activities of young people. I want you to understand your role in this most historic hour. Take this message forward, take your conviction forward and change the face of history. Amen! Amen!

Great! I finished in an hour and a half what I thought would take two hours . You can take the content of this message and debate with any theologian, and you can meet any politician or social worker and speak with confidence. You will have knowledge and truth that is more than that of a whole lifetime. You have been given a tool today. Go out and use it!

31. Vice Presidential Inauguration

Beloved True Parents, distinguished guests, members of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification International, family, friends, ladies and gentlemen. It is a distinctly humbling experience as well as a great honor to stand here before to receive this appointment as vice president of this world-renowned organization.

This appointment is all the more significant to me since the Family Federation represents the culmination of my father's lifelong efforts. It has always been my life's goal to ultimately aid my parents in building God's kingdom here on earth through the formation of God-centered families and, with this appointment, I can finally join them in their crusade.

Before I begin, I would like to extend my appreciation to all of you gathered here today to celebrate this day with me. I am deeply touched by this warm reception, your best wishes, and your vote of confidence. Thank you very much.

Fellow members of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification International, we stand today at a crossroads as we welcome the new millennium. Although your efforts over the past three years have laid the seeds for positive change throughout the world, the world is still plagued with its historical problems of war, social and moral decline and, most importantly, the disintegration of the family. Every day we are bombarded with images and news of regional, racial, ethnic and even religious conflict around the world, in our communities, and even in our homes, flaming the sparks of cynicism and defeatism in the human condition. The alarming statistics of high divorce rates, teenage pregnancies, drug abuse, youth related crimes, and AIDS attest to this sate state.

The true casualty of this onslaught is the family. That is why the mission of the Family Federation for World Peace to establish God-centered families working to bring about world peace is so important in addressing the many problems of the world today.

My father, from a very young age, knew that the key to unlocking God's misery as well as the suffering of mankind lay in the formation of a God-centered ideal family a true family. According to his teachings, the family in its perfected form is the highest expression of God's ideal. Within this basic social unit, the purpose of an individual man and woman is fulfilled when upon their union as husband and wife, they bring forth children as a product of their love. In addition, all the realms of heart expressed in the form of son and daughter, brother and sister, husband and wife and father and mother relationships are fulfilled within the family.

Regardless of who we are or what station we hold in life, are we not the son or daughter, brother or sister, husband or wife and father or mother of someone else? It is within the family then that we find all the essential relationships of heart that teaches us about faith, trust, obedience, compassion, forgiveness, humility, vulnerability and most of all true, unconditional love. It is within the family that our social consciousness is formed and our worldview molded.

If this essential social unit were flawed, then, would it not affect the whole of human society and even the world? I think the answer is clear. Problems stemming from the first human family have infected tribes, nations and ultimately the world throughout the course of human history. My father has been working tirelessly over the past 60 years to restore man's first family so than once again mankind could rest in the bosom of God.

The cross my parents had to bear to bring forth the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification International just three years ago was fraught with unspeakable, and often unseen suffering. As a son, I understand the sacrifices they made all too well. My parents had to endure ridicule, false accusations, and even imprisonment from the hands of those they were trying desperately to help.

I still vividly remember the day my father had to leave our home in East Garden to enter Danbury prison. I was only fourteen years old then and I remember how much anger I felt towards America in first humiliating and then incarcerating my father. However I remember how my father consoled me and my brothers and sisters, reminding us that through this sacrifice God will bless America even more.

I do not think any man or woman has endured the level of persecution that my parents have faced throughout their ministry, yet they hold no bitter feelings or ill will towards anyone. Walking the course of pioneers, they faithfully and unflinchingly paved a path for us here today This path, unfortunately, has been paid for in blood, sweat and tears.

Recognizing the immense suffering endured to erect the Family Federation for World Peace, I cannot but feel unworthy in receiving my appointment. As a young man, who has yet to be tested by life's trials, I still have much to learn and prepare. However, what I might lack in experience, I hope to make up for in youthful vigor and deep-seated desire to aid my parents in their life's mission.

I believe there are two areas in which I could make a positive contribution to the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification International. The first area is in the field of education. As a son, I have been very fortunate to intimately witness the extraordinary lives of my parents. Although I have been constantly impressed with the level of dedication and faith that many early as well as current disciples have exhibited, I could not help but notice the difficulty many have faced in trying to live up to the standard of faith, love and obedience maintained by my parents. Intimately knowing the standards by which my parents live as well as struggling myself to live by them, I feel I am in a unique position to offer guidance and assistance to those in need.

Secondly as a young man, I believe I have a clear obligation to revive the second generation of our movement as well as offer a fresh new vision for the world's youth. I firmly believe that the second generation carries the hope of our movement as well as the world, for they are the direct heirs of my parents' work. Up until now, however a systematic course of education and development was not laid out to prepare these youths to rightfully inherit their birthright as the heirs of our movement. As a result, many have become disillusioned and have fallen astray I pledge to alter this current state by reinvigorating them to recognize their value as historical figures in bringing about a world of peace and love. By raising these young people to represent God's ideal, they will offer an alternative standard of life to the young people of the world.

Over the last three years, the Family Federation for World Peace has touched the lives of hundreds of millions through its mass blessings and rededication ceremonies as well as through its countless peace initiatives to spawn co-operation and understanding in the fields of academia, religion, politics and the media. Clearly, it has been unprecedented that an organization with such a short history could have made such an impact in addressing the world's many problems.

The success of the Family Federation is rooted in its statement of purpose: to create God-centered families as the cornerstone of building a New World of Peace and Harmony. I ask all of you to embrace this motto and move forward with me in spreading this message throughout the world, thereby fulfilling my parents' lifelong mission.

Dear members of the Family Federation, we stand in the springtime of a new era. What we sow today we shall harvest in the future. Since we are standing at a crossroads in history, please rise with me and face the challenge of redirecting a world of decay into a world of hope and life. As we enter the new millennium, let us move forward with confidence that the day will come when all the 6 billion people of the world may shout with joy for their liberation from the heavy yoke of sin, hatred and conflict. May the year 2000 represent a new era in man's history where he may live once again in the bosom of God's heart.

Thank you very much.

30. Leaders Meeting (Different Version)

Hyun Jin Moon
August 6, 2000
Schmitten, Germany

We talk about the settlement age and about the providential timetable and history. When I look at the European situation, I see great opportunity. There are tremendous issues falling right into our laps. I talked to Christian and Peter about the Schengen issue and I am sure they thought it was another burden.

But think about it, the Schengen issue is much more than about Father and Mother coming into Europe. It is a human rights issue that all people can relate to. After Tien An Mien Square, Germany, France, Britain and the USA took issue with China about human rights. But what about the issue of religious freedom? It should be a rallying cry for all religious people around True Parents.

I remember 1984, when Father went to Danbury. It was the Danbury imprisonment that brought the Christian community to rally around True Parents.

Europeans ask why we can’t build the foundation in Europe that there is in America. The fact is we have lost sight of the possibilities and opportunities. This is the opportunity to bring the religious community that has been sitting idle on the sidelines to get into action. The legislation that is going on is not anti-UC, not anti-cult. It is anti religion and anti-God.

We talk about practical matters and the long-term view. The solution and opportunity is right in front of us and we did not see it. Think about the US civil rights movement. There was a speech played to the leadership class at HBS, the "I have a dream" speech by Martin Luther King, Jr. Now in HBS people tend to look at things analytically and critically. But in this case, everyone was looking attentively at the monitor. Some were crying. It went to the heart of an issue that brings everyone together. Especially those affected by conscience.

The issue of liberating God and of bringing him back to the family and the community is even more relevant that the civil rights movement. Human divinity comes from recognizing the supremacy of God in human affairs. It is a larger issue that can unite the religious community around True Parents. The providence is trying to reach out to all religious houses and challenge them to stop fighting each other, to fulfill their role of leading mankind back to the bosom of God. But religions left a bad taste in people’s mouths because of the infighting. It is time to go beyond the denominational beliefs. The time is coming to touch the heart of these religious leaders.

I raise this issue at the Hoon Dok Hae conferences every time. The testimonies of those leaders will make you cry. Our movement has become jaded because we hear much of the truth and become even more pessimistic than the world out there. What happens if a great champion, in the tradition of Martin Luther, created a new reformation here in Europe? Or a new Martin Luther King goes to the government in Berlin and proclaims that this is an issue that goes beyond just Rev. Moon and to all people of religion?

What do you think will happen? Will people of conscience turn their heads or listen, and eventually join the cause and support True Parents. In Hungary, I told leaders this: many people look to me for consolation. They want me to say that they did a good job. But do we want to be substantially proud of things or just conceptually? Substantial change means we are moving this nation and changing it, not just watching history pass us by but being active in creating a new history. We need substantial victory, not just concepts. There are tremendous opportunities out there, how do we capture them?

It’s a natural impulse of any man to want to be recognized. When I as a son, knowing the weight of the providence and the course of the 2nd Generation come to Father looking for consolation, what did Father say? He said, "Every time God promised me great blessing he sent me to prison." You might say, that is not so inspiring. But in fact when Father went to prison our movement was propelled forward.

Sometimes the cherries that are best are hard to pick. The Shengen issue is an opportunity, more than a burden. No one can support the stance that these governments have taken. It is an arbitrary decision with no foundation in freedom and democracy or law. It is contrary to the legal position and the basic impulse of man. They are going on a course that is more and more indefensible.

This should not be something to flow away in time, but used as a chance to consolidate our position in Europe. This is an issue and an opportunity, and I am not saying this just as an offended son. We should use it as a chance to bring out the sword or righteousness. I don’t want you as leaders not to see the opportunity. We can move forward with confidence when we leave the baggage behind, because we have righteousness on our side.

How many of these speeches do I have to give? Perhaps we should use the Internet to give more information. What I said in Budapest would not have to be repeated here. Or you want to hear it right from the horse’s mouth?

As you know I have taken responsibility for World Carp. Through the speaking tours I wanted to take charge of developing it because until now there was no substantial World CARP. But there will be by the end of the year. In each country I revived the CARP movement and connected it to World CARP. I am going to do that here. I want to revive the CARP movement here in Europe.

Why is that important? Every new age is ushered in by young people. The changes in Korea now started with the student movement. Good or bad, students bring about the change. In every country students are the front line troops for spreading the message.

One of the most undervalued assets of our movement has been the student movement. Up until this point there has been no clear standard. In some countries CARP didn't exist, in some it did but was under the church, the 2nd generation didn’t know what to do. But now a World CARP organization is being set up in every continent in the world.

How do you move a nation with a long history? In Korea in 3 weeks I was able to move all aspects of the movement, The CARP organization that was defunct and buried was revived. The 2nd Generation department that was without vision now has vision. The 1st generation who did not know where they stood with the settlement age now know where they stand.

Young people have the hope of the movement. Even in High School and middle school they are preparing for a life of public mission where they will be joining in providential activity. Even more exciting, they want to take on the role of Abel and change the Cain type children of the world. Not just an internal role but an external role.

What happens if in Korea we have 10,000 A-type members who absolutely believe in True parents and the providence? And 100,000 associate members who will support? Will the nation of Korea listen or not? A student movement of that size will dictate the terms of the future of the nation. What about Japan, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Russia, Hungary, Germany? That is the reason we need to build a grassroots base to change the nation. And students can move the nation even more.

I know that many of you look to the American movement as a model. There are good things they did there but one thing that they did not do was to develop the grassroots movement. We have many friends in many areas, but those people cannot come forward and say that Rev. Moon is the Messiah and we should follow him, because we do not have a big enough grassroots base. They might want to do it but we are too small. If they do it their political career will be over and then they cannot help us anymore.

Thus my message and vision for World CARP is something that will propel our movement into the 21st century. That substantial reality comes from True Parents. IT is their effort and suffering that brought about the settlement age. From now on the CARP organizations focus will be on witnessing, building the grassroots student movement.

What about World CARP? What happens if you have 100, 200 300 thousand members in several countries. As one World organization, you will have a lot of clout in international bodies such as the UN. What do you think? With that membership CARP could have tremendous clout at the international level.

The vision and hope of the settlement age is great. I tell the 2nd generation, don’t make the same mistake as your parents made. Don’t say I believe in TP but don’t want to be involved in the public life. If you miss this time you will never be able to get it back. I told them learn from the example of your elders. Look at those elder second generation who left to pursue their own career but are now coming back with their tales between their legs. If we can work together and unite around a common vision we can build a better future, not only for you and your children but also for the whole movement.

I gave direction to the national leaders to bring the Unification church house back into order. Bring the Blessed Couples back and unite them first. To capture the nation, we have to put our house in order. Abraham Lincoln, quoting scripture said, "A house divided cannot stand. A nation divided cannot stand."

If America wants to achieve the greatness of the founding fathers, it has to stand united. If the Unification movement wants to find greatness, it cannot be a house divided, it has to stand together to capture the promise of the settlement age. This is what CARP is going to usher in. Instead of sitting on the sidelines, get involved! Watch what happens to CARP in two years and in five years.

This is not just words, but we are building a substantial base on which these words have tremendous weight. How many of the 2nd Generation are going to be committed for that cause, or are you just going to join later on? Think it from this view. Gods providence will always be moving forward, the door will always be open but those who go in first and help build it will be remembered. The select few who were willing to put their neck on the line first are the ones history remembers.

This is that time for our movement. For those who came to the CARP Convention I told you it is time to dream again. To see the possibilities to revisit the hopes and possibilities that existed in your youth and be connected to Gods providence again. If that fire and hope is rekindled once again there is nothing that stands before us. Everything becomes a challenge and a way to become stronger and stronger, AMEN.

I am a student of history and I find inspiration from the stories of the underdogs who were able to win if they stayed the course. Look at the Christians. One martyr could bring one hundred more. Every time the nations of Europe persecute True Parents is a chance for us to bring our movement before the public conscience of the nations. If we stay the course and connect to the larger mission, our movement will grow more and more. Be willing to accept the challenge because in overcoming it you will grow more.

What is the secret for staying the course? The foundation of absolute faith, love and obedience. We came to the 7th millennium because God stayed the course with us, despite the constant failure. God always believed that eventually through free will his sons and daughters would come back to him. That has been the hope of God since the beginning. We cannot forget this.

I told the leaders in Virginia that there would be World CARP by the end of this year, and you can see that it is happening. Are the young people burning with fire once again? Do the older jaded first generation who want to hide in their homes want to start opening their doors again? Yes or no? If that is really the case, is there tremendous hope or not? Who is bringing the hope? You are. Every young person who commits to the vision and building the foundation is making this dream a reality. Every member who comes out of the home and wants to participate in God's providence is helping make the dream a reality. You have to take ownership over Gods providence. Amen!

From now on I am not going to come and do a CARP rally unless there are a minimum of 1,000 core members and a lot of guests. Japan wants to do 4 cities with 10,000 people each next year. Philippines wants to do 20,000 next year. One senator in charge of education there, a current senator said he would personally visit every CARP center and make the growth of CARP his core mission. Is that a dream or can it be a reality? For those of you who are non-believers, wait and see.

If CARP is an IPO, you can get in on the ground floor or you can wait until it is too high for you to get in. Are you going to be connected or disconnected? Online? Or Offline?

I will give you the same two pieces of advice I give all leaders. We have entered the settlement age. Lay aside your baggage and come on, and dream. Secondly, always think that you are the problem. Change yourself rather than criticizing other people. Too much effort is already spent on that, and not enough on developing ourselves. If you change yourself you will be the magnet on which all people will come to you. Are you a believer or not?

29. Leaders Meeting

Hyun Jin Moon

The legislation that is going on is not anti-Unification Church, not anti-cult.

When I as a son, knowing the weight of the providence and the course of the Second Generation come to Father looking for consolation, what did Father say?

28. Speech at the European CARP Convention

Hyun Jin Moon
August 5, 2000

This is a message for young people, so we have to think and be united as young people. Those of us over 25 who want to participate have to first strip ourselves of the baggage and cynicism that come with old age. You have to revisit the young person you were 5, 10, 15, 20 years ago. Then we can begin this theme of hope and possibility, of our movement standing erect and tall, able to dream and look to the stars. This is a gift of God, to see the possibilities the future could bring. We have to revisit that youthful, dreamlike state, to reinvigorate our movement.

However, before we look at the future we have to look at the root from which we came. After all it has been the hope and dream of every young person to have a better world, but it has always been beyond the grasp of each generation. All young people, including those who are now in their 30s, 40s, 50s, have had the same dreams. They could not sustain the dream because it did not have a root; it was only on a horizontal basis and could not transcend time. It must be rooted in something so deep that eventually that root goes all the way to the beginning of human history, to creation, when the world was a concept in the mind of God.

So what was that dream that God had for humanity? What was God's hope? Divine Principle clearly tells us that man was not created randomly but to bring joy to God. But how do you do that? Whoever you ask, people will say that what they want is love. Whether in Africa or Siberia, the answer will always be love, because it is love that people strive for to find value. And what about God? He strives for love too. He created man and woman to be the object of his love, to be able to transcend time and establish an eternal foundation through the ideal family.

That is why at this time when we are entering the settlement age, we have to fulfil what God wanted at the beginning. It is in the ideal family where you have three kingships, the four realms of heart, where you can build the substantial kingdom of God. The three kingships represent three generations. The grandparents represent the past, the parents the present and the third generation the future. There is always a past, present and future, and in three generations you encapsulate the whole continuum of human experience. In the ideal family that God wanted to establish through Adam and Eve, God would have been the grandparent, Adam and Eve the parents, and Cain, Abel and Seth the future.

Why are the four realms of heart important? How do we learn about love, how do we know that it exists? Not by thinking about it, but by experiencing it directly. Even newborn babies, and animals respond to loving gestures. The language of love is the language of heart and feeling. The first love we experience is parents' love for us, then brother's and sister's love, husband and wife conjugal love and finally as parents for our own children. In the family we can experience it all for ourselves.

Divine Principle teaches us that Adam and Eve fell away from God in their teenage years, when they were immature individuals. The restoration age therefore focused on finding restored individuals, but the settlement age is the time to establish the original family. Father just recently started teaching about the three kingships and the four great realms of heart. Why did he wait? This revelation was not pertinent to the restoration era, but had to be declared in the settlement era.

Inheritance and Development means you receive a tradition that predates you, and then you build more upon it. So we have to understand what the tradition is and why it applies to us. This applies to both first and second generation. The reason I am holding this CARP convention is to explain about what the settlement era really is. Do you want to do that or not? YES! You are well trained! How many of you are from the PLA tour?

What is the settlement era? To answer that we have to ask whether God's plan for True Parents was to walk the course of wilderness and build the Unification Movement. The answer is no, it was not. That was a side product. Father absolutely did not have to go this course. Many of you are parents, or if you ask your parents then you will know that the heart of the parent is to sacrifice everything, even her own body, to nurture the child. The father will do everything to provide safety and protection. That is the parental heart to prepare everything in advance.

Then what about God, the absolute parent? Could he prepare any less for his son and daughter? No. Then ask, what is the role of the Lord of the Second Advent, or the Messiah, to die on the cross and walk the way of suffering for humanity? Or to come on a prepared foundation of glory on which the kingdom of heaven could be built?

Of course there was preparation before God would send his son. Divine Principle explains that God does 95% of the responsibility and only 5% is left to be fulfilled by man. That was true in Eden, and is true today. When Jesus came, could God as a loving parent really have sent his son to suffer and die? No parent can ever say that they want their child to suffer and bear the cross of human history. And yet the path of history has been a thorny path because of the failure of the responsibility of man.

This is my 20th CARP Convention rally, and the final rally for this year. Talking to young people from every corner of the world, from Asia to Russia to Europe, I learned one thing: young people have an attention deficit disorder. Are you any different? If you are then I can talk for hours and explain everything. Beware of what you say, because you might just get it. As I told you I am the son of the greatest preacher, speaker, lecturer in the world, right? Father holds the record of 22 hours speaking continuously. Even the translator had to use his pants as a toilet. It was that much of marathon. Will you do the same today, following the tradition of that translator?

In my experience up to now, I found that young people have an attention disorder beyond 30 minutes or an hour. Are you going to do that today? You must be the young people who want to commit themselves to God's providence, to fulfil the dream of every generation! If that is the spirit of the young people here today then the kingdom of heaven is surely at hand. You have to prove it to me. I tell you the Moon clan knows the fine art, passed down from generation, of talking for a long, long time. Do you want to learn that secret?

The history of God's providence is covered with blood sweat and tears. Think of the history of Israel, whether people knew it or not, God never left mankind. He worked through Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, taking them out of Egypt and building the nation of Israel until sending Jesus. God was working his providence, whether the people of that time realized it or not. His divine hand was moving through the history that they were creating. And not just the in the Old Testament Age, but the New Testament also tells the same story. We are a co-creator in building Gods kingdom. The 5% responsibility means everything will be fulfilled or not through our response.

God built a foundation for Jesus throughout the world, but it was all lost when the prepared people did not unite with Jesus. Then he was crucified and another 2000 years were involved. This history would take many hours to explain, but for the purpose of this conference I will make it quick.

You know Father spoke many times about the failure of Adam and Eve and the failure of John the Baptist. We have to reflect whether God's providence can move through us any better. Are we fulfilling our 5%? We might be like ants on a lawn that only see blades of grass in all directions, but not how far we have come. Then we think we have not come anywhere with our movement and things are still the same.

We have to take a larger vertical view to find out where we really are. We have to know how our lives, our families and our nations really stand. We are historical people whether we realize it or not. What we do today, will come out in the future. Are we doing our 5% or not? When we hear Father's words, we sometimes wonder, "Is this is just Father's words or is this real history?" However, God's providence is not abstract but intimately connected to human history.

If you look at it from a human viewpoint, Israel seemed such a backward, remote and unimportant country. Yet, it was also the crossroads of trade in the Mediterranean area. It was the bridge to the East. Not only that, the Jewish population numbered around 30% of the Roman Empire. Rome was a democratic state, with senators. Any political scientists will tell you that if you control 30% of the vote you control the people. But the Jews were disunited and could not exert that power. They needed the Davidic throne to unite them, to create one unified nation and world.

God's foundation was substantial and physical. Everything was already in place. John the Baptist held the key. When you were on the tour, some representatives came to give you the key of the city, right? That is a symbolic acceptance of your role. But the failure of John was much more than a failure of that kind of symbolic gesture.

When Adam and Eve fell, the position of elder brother, parent and king was lost. When Adam and Eve fell God tried to restore them through Cain and Abel, but they too failed. The positions were all lost. The family that would have been the substantial ideal of God was lost.

Who was to restore the position of elder brother, true parents and king? Who could ascend the Jewish throne? Jesus. It was John the Baptist who held the key. Jesus' bride should have been John's young sister. John held not only the national key, but also the key for Jesus to become a True Parent. John had to let Jesus restore the position of elder brother. For this reason, God raised up John to great prominence through his divine grace and blessing.

Christians believe that John the Baptist was a great saint, but our movement knows differently. Only we really understand how much was lost when Jesus was crucified. The nation was lost. True Parents were lost. True elder brother was lost. So God's providence had to extend 2000 more years. It is a sad and long history. God's providential history is littered with blood, sweat and tears because of this missed chance. 2000 years of suffering became necessary.

Think of this from a parental viewpoint. Imagine you had a long lost friend who you can meet for just a few minutes but lost. Or a parent who has a chance to meet a child for a few minutes and the window closes. Is the feeling of pain of missing a loved one something you can see or touch? No, but it affects you most deeply. You young people have to understand the heart of God, his heart of suffering, as not only he lost his son and the 4000-year foundation.

God moves with purpose, intimately engaged in how the Lord should come so that humanity could once again have a chance. We know that Father was to come on the foundation of Christian history left by Jesus. But what happened?

Are you ready for a long tale, yes or no? Are you really young people here? Only old boring people like this content. Young people want to hear things short, sweet and exciting. True or not? What happens if some people from the German government are here to see what we do? They banned our True Parents from coming into this nation. What is that?

I have met with many world leaders at the Hoon Dok Hae conferences. It is a good time for them to know what we do. I tell them, "You want to know the secret of brainwashing? It is this, love others more than yourself, then you will touch their heart." At certain points in time, the truth of this revelation was understood. But as the world became more modern, people forgot.

How did the Christian foundation move to Korea? How was the timing so perfect? If one looks closely at the historical record one, cannot say that God is not walking with us. After the crucifixion, Christianity moved west to Rome, then Germany, then later divided into the Catholic and Lutheran traditions. The Abel type of Christianity, Protestantism, went to England where it divided again. The Abel camp, the Puritans, went to America to found the new nation of God.

If you study the history of the USA you will see that it has always revered the notion of religious freedom. Denominations that faced persecution had to send representatives to America. The earlier settlers, moving to the USA, spread westward with the idea of Manifest Destiny.

Did they stop on the West Coast? No, they did not. They took the Christian message to the far corners of Asia by the end of the 19th century. Among those Asian nations which one inherited Christianity? It was Korea. If you look at Christianity in Japan, it is still not even 3%. China is even less. But in Korea, more than 50% became Christian.

Providence is not something detached from our human history. Whether we realize it or not, we are the agents of God's history. In the early part of the 1900s there were great revivals going on in North Korea. Pyongyang, not many miles from Father's home, was the site of the greatest revivals. When was Father born? 1920. All the foundation was being laid before True Parents were born.

With so much foundation, what went wrong? The Israelites had the view that the Messiah would start his universal mission in Israel and raise that nation over all others. The struggle was the same in Korea; they wanted to build national sovereignty rather than reach to the world. American Christians and others were supposed to unite with the Korean Christians.

Was this random or the divine hand of God, or just coincidence? When one understands the providential course and sees how God has worked, the validity of his claim to this world cannot be denied. Who has revealed that? True Parents.

In 1945, there was a switch from a European to American-centered world. America was the only great power. Americanisation was everywhere. What if Korea had united with True Parents? What if America had fulfilled God's will back in 1945? Then the world would have been absolute different. The threat of thermonuclear destruction would not have plagued man for the past half a century.

The history of Christianity in Korea is important. There was still a 5% responsibility. Jesus stood rejected by the very people that he came to save. Father was in the same position. Think about the obstacles at that time, knowing that 6000 years of biblical history was all lost. Knowing that in order to once again come to that point, how much suffering and condition would have to be paid.

When I spoke to the young people in Korea I told them that life is not easy. Challenges are the way in which I grow, I become more mature. Then I grow, rather than run away from challenges of life. But instead of rising to the challenge, these days young people are even giving up their lives meaninglessly.

Although I am second generation, I know your parents and the first generation well. The whole restoration era, and the burden of restoration conditions was not God's ideal. It was only necessary to restore what was lost. Today we can see the promise of the land of Canaan. At Moses time, the 1st generation was left behind but don't worry. You won't be left behind.

If that were the only message I gave, then there would not be the response to the Inheritance and Development tour that there has been around the world. Every hall was jam-packed, and people were coming up to a whole day before. It was great. And the 1st generation responded as well as the 2nd Generation.

No one could enter without a ticket. In fact a secondary market in tickets arose. Who has money in the family? Not the students, so they complained. Then we made an age limit cut-off but that was deeply unpopular too. So halfway through we decided to do a larger conference and invite them. We did not want to leave the parents in isolation behind us.

When you want to reach the ideal of the settlement age, the first condition is that you have to be ready to leave behind the baggage. All the bad things from the past stopped a whole generation. Those who can see the positive side to this realize it is very simple. The 2nd Generation, the people who enter Canaan should carry no baggage.

In the settlement age, the focus is the family. Why? God wanted to create the ideal family where true love, life and lineage could dwell. The settlement age brings that promise, and the focus is to build the ideal families. The three kingships represent past, present and future. Did God only want to save Adam and Eve, and not Abel and Cain? No. God wanted to restore brothers to restore the parents, to restore the first generation. The first generation today represents the parents, the 2nd generation the children. As a family with God, we now have to move into the kingdom of heaven. Amen!

The settlement age means that the family can be the center. The kingdom of heaven is going to be built through the creation of ideal families. I told you that it is not something conceptual and far away, but a reality.

Everyone wants love. It is the ultimate impulse, is it not? As you love your parents, don't they reciprocate it back to you? The foundation is getting larger and larger. If you build a true love relationship between husband and wife, don't you give value to each other? If you live for the sake of others, don't you give value to brothers and sister, who might not be the same as you? Love is something that everyone wants, that gives value and meaning to life. Where do we learn this knowledge? In the family.

In every nation I visited, in every forum, I told people that they were getting so consumed with current circumstances that they don't se the big picture. Youth purity, AIDS growth etc. are getting worse, but we don't agree on any of the remedies because we are focusing on the symptoms, not the root of the problem. The root is in the family.

What are universal issues? Not money - some have it some not. Not education. There will always be some people more educated and wealthier than the others. But what is it that every single person holds in common? The family. We all have a father and mother, brothers and sisters, etc.

If there is a society, a nation that comes from True Love, what have you built? The Kingdom of Heaven on earth. The kingdom of heaven starts within us. If we do not learn how to love others first, then how can we build a true marriage? How can we build a true marriage, family society, nation and world?

My advice to you is to never think that everyone else is the problem. Think that, "I am the problem. I find difficulties now, let me learn how to digest them and become stronger." If a young person lives with that kind of commitment, that person will eventually make those ideals substantial. They will serve others not only in their family but also in society as well.

Every advancement in history starts with a dream. Recently I was in Russia and I went to see Lenin's tomb, where he is embalmed for all history to see. I was surprised to see this man who changed the destiny of billions of people for half the century. He was a very small, unimpressive little man but his influence was enormous. So don't tell me that one person cannot make a difference, that a dream cannot be fulfilled, that a vision so far away cannot be grasped and made a reality. History was built on such dreams!

Through the Hoon Dok Hae conferences and my tour, I have spoken to many world leaders. Do you think I am passive and apologetic? Or do I grab those thick-headed, Ph.D.-holding individuals and kick them in the butt? They need a kick in the butt because they understand so little about what true knowledge really is. How do you learn? Experience or cognition? Do you have to understand everything logically, or you learn it through real life experience? True knowledge is like love, we know it because we feel it.

When Father asked intellectuals what is the most important organ, everyone said the brain, that's what allowed us to make the world the way it is. But Father said, you people are like children who don't know anything. The most important organ is the sexual organ! Why? If you think greatness comes from power, knowledge or money, then indeed the brain is great for all that. You absolutely need it. But if true value comes from True Love, which organ allows us to experience that as a substantial reality?

Even in our movement people are different. Some members are simple older Korean sisters who know nothing except how to serve and follow True Parents. There are others who came from the best university. Of the two, whom do I want to emulate when I grow up? Is it the person who needs to have everything explained first, or the one who truly feels the truth and goes ahead in faith love and obedience? Isn't that the way that God wanted humanity?

If value is from True Love, who is setting the better example? It is those uneducated 'ignorant' people who yet have an absolute relationship of filial piety, not those who decide based on whether it makes sense or not. Many relationships of love don't really make sense but you still know you will not quit. Heartistic knowing is not ignorance; it is another way of knowing. That one person could make the absolute relationship on which they could never give up, and that is what true love is about.

I could go on but I am already at the 2-hour stage. [Go on!] You young people must really be different. Are you wolves in sheep's clothing? You must be more mature that your innocent faces suggest.

We learn how to live a public life starting with our family. That is why it is the school of love, where we live for the sake of others beyond ourselves. This is why ideal families must be substantially created on the face of the earth.

I know especially here in Germany and Europe a lot of things need to be done. A lot of baggage and history has to be left behind. Don't you think we need to create a whirlwind? It uproots everything and turns it round. Don't you think Europe needs a remodeling? Are you ready to go out and remodel the face of Europe, yes or no?

In this city of Frankfurt a storm is brewing that will echo through out Europe. Calm down now. I have violated German time. I am way, way beyond schedule here. I'm a guest here. This is a nation that won't even let True Parents in. We have to change this.

We have to teach the Germans about Filipino time. Do you know what that is? On my tour I realized that different countries have different ideas about time. First of all I learned about Japanese time. Everything must start on exact schedule. A bell rings, and the person starts talking right on time. There is no deviation at all.

After Japan, I went to the Philippines. I saw the schedule sheet and it looked even more precise than Japan. It said 9.05 start, 9.07 introduction and at 9.18 you will speak. I thought this is great. And I wanted to see what would happen. Well, 9.05, 9.07, 9.18 came and went and we hadn't even started. More than one hour later it all began. But no one got upset. I love Filipino time. They will stay there all night if necessary.

Let me make a long story short, so you can focus on the content. If we keep on going, you will forget it. We have entered a new age the age of settlement. Our movement should dream and look at possibilities as we make God's kingdom through ideal families. If we want to commit to this mission we should look forward, not back. We should leave the baggage behind and have a mind of gratitude! Amen!

I came here wearing many different hats. The banner says 'World CARP President Inaugural Tour,' how stuffy is that? I came here as your older brother. An old fashioned one who likes to preach and teach. You know that side well. But an older brother knows how to have fun too! The most fun place is the Unification Church, right here. Let's have fun and celebrate!

27. The Purpose of Hyun Jin Nim s World Speaking Tour

(Sources: Hyun Jin Nim s words; official report of Jin Man Kwak on the world tour)

Hyun Jin Nim is the third son of True Parents, born in 1969. He has been living in the USA since the age of four and was educated there. Hyun Jin Nim s educational accomplishments include an MBA from Harvard Business School. He has several successful businesses of his own. Hyun Jin Nim represented Korea at equestrian events in the Olympic Games. He recently became vice-president of FFWPU and was inaugurated World CARP President in March this year. He is now studying at UTS. Hyun Jin Nim s heart and attitude can be summarized in the following quote: I wear many hats, but the title I would cherish most is the title of being your Elder Brother .

Hyun Jin Nim is dedicated to ensuring that True Children, the Second Generation, and all Unification members are able to fully inherit the victorious foundation of True Parents. True Parents have successfully established the eternal vertical tradition. With the dawning of the Age of Settlement, that tradition is to produce fruits on the horizontal level as well. In the Settlement Age, both spiritual awareness and practical expertise are called for. Hyun Jin Nim is therefore giving both heartistic and spiritual guidance as well as reforming structures in our movement.

The Settlement Era is the time when the youth are to spearhead God s providence: Now is the time young people should take the mantle of providential calling, to truly put the flesh on the bone, to substantially build God s Kingdom here on earth. For Hyun Jin Nim, Second Generation refers to all people who participate in realizing the ideals of the Age of Settlement, including those belonging to the First Generation. In his wisdom, Hyun Jin Nim sees that only by establishing unity and consensus between the First and Second Generations, between the church and CARP movements, and between the leaders and members that is, as one unified family can we enter victoriously into the Age of Settlement. In working for these goals, Hyun Jin Nim does not simply use his authority as True Father s son, but prefers to use a leadership style of genuine persuasion that moves the hearts and minds of the people. Furthermore, Hyun Jin Nim encourages all members to have the mentality of an owner, striving to enlarge the pie rather than trying to carve out a bigger piece for ourselves. To help along this process, top leaders should give middle-level leaders the authority and accountability through which they can develop and grow. The leader is the one who brings people together, builds coalition, and leads people into the new age.

CARP, representing the Second Generation and the Youth, must stand at the forefront and spearhead this unified family. In order to do that, the CARP movement worldwide must be reformed and re-organized as a semi-autonomous, independent organization that can focus on its mission consistently without interference. Hyun Jin Nim feels that through CARP s growth, the whole movement can grow and develop because CARP will increase the membership base and become the engine that will drive the whole movement forward. CARP must be an evangelical movement, bringing young people into our movement. Secondly, CARP must prepare the future leadership of our movement by re-educating the Second Generation.

Since the Settlement Age is the age of changing the focus from the individual to the family, both the First and Second Generations of the Unification Family should work together to accomplish this historical task. The church stands in the father s position, the WFWP in the mother s position and CARP in the son s position. Mothers - who have the greatest influence on their children - should encourage them to go toward the public course, rather than just emphasizing secular education. CARP will provide an opportunity for the second generation to experience their faith on the front line in the field, which will challenge them to come to terms with their identity and faith and enable them to make their faith their own.

The CARP Conventions in Budapest and Frankfurt are part of a world speech tour of Hyun Jin Nim entitled Inheritance and Development. As the title suggests, the issues are how to inherit the victories of the elder generation, but also how to use that foundation and what to add to it in order to develop our movement. Hyun Jin Nim has already visited Korea, Japan and other Asian countries and had tremendously successful conventions there, addressing tens of thousands of blessed families and CARP members. In the words of Jin Man Kwak, Hyun Jin Nim s assistant, Hyun Jin Nim has led the way by persevering with a grueling schedule to bring the message home and his efforts have certainly borne fruits with changed attitude, perspective and atmosphere. There has been a paradigm shift from the restorational age to the settlement age; from past-oriented to future-oriented thinking; from a reactive, judgmental and cynical attitude to a proactive, inclusive and optimistic attitude.

We are very happy that Hyun Jin Nim has accepted our invitation to come to Europe. All our members should be mobilized to come to the Conventions in Budapest and Frankfurt. Blessed families can have a wonderful experience, receiving love and guidance and enjoying entertainment as well. We absolutely need to connect with the heart and spirit of True Parents successor, who is leading us into the Age of Settlement.

A few excerpts from the testimony of Japan CARP President, Eiji Tokuno, on Hyun Jin Nim s speaking tour in Japan, which attracted over 20,000 members:

The tour was very meaningful for the First Generation. Their chief concern at this moment is how True Parents successor would be. Members traveled many hours, desperate to see Hyun Jin Nim and Jun Sook Nim. Many of them could not enter the hall and had to watch the event through monitor in the lobby. At some events, people started to line up outside several hours or even one day before.

Hyun Jin Nim is the substance of great hope for both the First and Second Generations. Some of the Second Generation are struggling with the Unification Church and their parents as well. Also, they have been alienated by the bad reputation of the Unification Church. However, they were totally changed through attending the event. Some Second Generation testified that they felt hope in the Unification Church for the first time, while parents were moved to see their children shed tears and become aware of their faith.

The entire Unification membership of Japan has been ignited with the spark of great hope. Everyone feels that the future of the Unification Movement is secure and full of hope With greetings and best wishes.

The history of the Japanese Church has been a history of a mother taking care of worldwide movement. The heart of mother is placing all of your attention and energy to that child in the womb. When that child reaches 9 months and when is born into the world, the mother places so much care and effort to make sure the environment is safe and the child is well. Isn't that the heart of a mother? A mother's heart is always looking for that child. 100% of her investment is given to that child.

The minute child is born, suckles that child through every stage and development of child, so too she finds hope, joy and sorrow. She vicariously lives through her child. Regardless of joy and sorrow, her heart remains the same. Isn't that the heart of mother? The bond she has is absolute and eternal Even if a mother brings criminal to the world, she still has the same heart. So is achieving motherhood the greatest blessing or is it a curse? When you bring a child to this world, your heart is filled with grief many times. Do you still think it is the greatest to be mother of a child? It is so crucial for life itself as well as for future

Japan took the burden of a mother in cultivating all that is in the world. She rejoiced when mission countries did well and suffered when they struggled.. Japan has been walking the path of mother. As a mother, the heart of Japanese church should also be absolute and eternal.

When I went to Korea I gave a different message because I know the situation is different. The minute I arrived there was a welcoming reception. I talked for one hour on why I came to Korea. I was encouraging, but I also went right to the nerve of what needed to said. I spoke very frankly. I did not have time to beat around the bush. I had to go right to the matter, fix it and move on. I had to be very clear of my objective of why I came to Korea. I told them very clearly "I am not a politician, I will tell you what I think". That is how I started in Korea, and I intend to do the same in Japan. Instead of wasting time, let me get right to the point of why I am here.

As I have explained, we have entered into a new age, settlement age. Why do we call it the settlement age, instead of the restoration age? Why do we make the distinction? To answer this question, we need to reflect on whether True Father's purpose and mission was to walk the suffering course of 40 years in the wilderness and create the Unification Church. Was it original prescribed course? No.

After the fall of Adam and Eve, God spent 4000 years to prepare for the coming of Jesus with a parental heart, like the heart of mother, and the same concern and care she has in bringing a new child to the world. But because the chosen people of Israel and religious house of Judaism didn't unite with Jesus, the 4000 years of preparation for the national foundation was lost. Had Jesus fulfilled his mission, we would not need 2000 years of preparation of Christianity for Lord of the Second Advent.

In the same way, the foundation that was prepared for True Parents, the worldwide foundation was lost. Yet Father could not stop. He had to restore the mission of messiah-elder sonship, True parentship and Kingship on the worldwide level. That is how the course of Unification Church began. All the prepared foundation was lost and Father alone had to build the foundation from the individual all the way to the worldwide level, in 40 years. Trying to compress 6000 years into 40 years; how many different conditions would Father need to accomplish?

Because of this course of restoration, our organization was often apparently very shortsighted but it was necessary. Now, after the indemnity has been paid, our movement came full circle upon the victorious foundation restored through True Parent's victorious foundation and the efforts of our movement. We are standing in zero point once again where we can build God's kingdom, at the point where Father could have begun building God's kingdom. In that sense our movement has come in full circle.

But to enter into the new era, we can't carry all the baggage of the past. Our position is analogous to that of the Israelites when they entered into Canaan. The first generation, who had suffered in Egypt and endured 40 years of wilderness course, could not enter the promised land. Why? Because they carried so much baggage, dissention and bickering. So God brought forth the Second Generation to build God's nation.

Does that mean today that only the Second Generation can enter into new age? No. What it means is that at the end of restoration era, we have to start new, willing to see from new perspective. But many of you still carry the pessimism and doubt, the baggage of restorational era.

What was the focus of the restorational era? It was on individual level. If you look at the 6000 years of restoration history, the focus was on man's individual relationship with God and the Lord. Why? Because Adam and Eve fell before becoming perfected individuals. If they had been perfected, they would have consummated the blessing and fulfilled the ideal of God, the ideal family. God, Adam and Eve and Cain and Abel would have fulfilled the 3 kingships That was the Original Ideal.

What was the original purpose of God in creating? The ideal family. Until the settlement era , True Father didn't mention about 4 realms of heart and the 3 kingships. If you relate to God as an individual your relationship it is only linear and one dimensional. But the ideal family captures the 3 dimensions of love. The center of all those points meet is where True Love dwells and God dwells.

The point of restoration was to restore the ideal family. That is why Father said you cannot enter into the Kingdom of Heaven by yourself but only with your family. Even if you are in heaven, if your daughter, wife is in the dungeon it is not heaven. All these teachings came now, because paradigm has shifted

That is why we go through 3 stages of life. As a baby in our mothers womb, the essence of life is water, amniotic fluid. During life on this world, the essence is air, and our body is the capsule. In the Kingdom of Heaven in the Spirit World, the essence is love. What captures this life is the family. That is why you need a family.

So if you want to prepare yourself to enter into settlement era, you have to change the way you think. If you still carry all the baggage and difficulties of the past, you will not be able to see the hope and possibility of Settlement Age. Isn't that why members struggled over Father giving blessing so freely? That struggle recaps the debate in Christian history between the Donatists and St. Augustine; about what makes for saints and sinners. Why are we giving blessing so freely to these people who do not deserve it? Just to fulfill a number? No!. Because the new era has come. What is the heart of God, our parent? To save just a few? Absolutely not. Abel lives for Cain, to bring Cain back to God. Through the early disciples, Father was indemnifying the foundation so that a time when the Blessing can be freely given could come.

The first generation of our movement tends only to see from their organizational or individual perspective, and to be only concerned about relationship with Parents and not with members. This has created a lot of friction. What happened is that our movement became very political. If you have a political orientation, then you see all others as political. Frankly, we have not been able to manifest ideal of living for sake of others. That is why we need to change in this new age.

When I talk with First Generation members for the first time I tend to give them a bitter pill. Same with the Second Generation too. I could never understand why the issue of generations was such an issue. The only reason is that each saw purely from their own point of view. I saw this first hand at the University of Bridgeport when I invited representatives of the 2nd Generation to comment on the situation of the movement. Some of them were like machine gun, constantly shooting out bullets of criticism. I looked at my watch as 10, 20 minutes went by!

Finally I said "Stop, this is not time for that. It is not time to look at from only from your own point of view. Whether or not the First Generation did a lot of bad things is beside the point. The fact of matter is that the First Generation and the Second Generation's destiny is tied together. It's a parent and child relationship. If you are critical of others you are critical of yourself, your root. These little conflicts are so unhealthy, and happen because we see from individual perspective.

That is why I advise members that we are entering into a new era, so we should strip ourselves of all the baggage. Second, we should recognize that we are the problem. Instead of blaming everyone else, we must conquer ourselves. If you can do that you will automatically become the center, because you will pull everyone in to it naturally. But ff you enter an organization and blame everyone else, you will push everyone out and break the organization. It is such a deep advice because it captures the fundamental truth. If we can do this we will develop new culture, new way of doing things.

If we look at our movement we have everything. In terms of content, there is no other religion that is better than us. But we haven't grown because of our weak organization. We are the problem. We didn't work together! All of us are moving separately. One of the important things I did in Korea was to bring all groups and give everyone common vision. I don't look at myself as just the President of CARP. I am Father's son, and so everything concerns me.

Your interest should not lie only with your own organization. You should constantly look to enlarge the pie, not about how you can take a better piece. Even though my percentage is same, as the pie grows we get larger. I am not here only as CARP leader.

I could easily use Father's authority, but that is not my style. If I do that and a person really doesn't understand, then that person will not have ownership of the idea or the vision. That is why I have tried to persuade everyone to become the owners of the new age. For example, Father already made it clear that this whole movement should support CARP. So why am I making this tour? Although I am CARP leader, I see this as a fundamental component in building our overall foundation. That is why I spent so much time not only with young people and CARP leaders but all different constituencies, getting them buy into it, to agree to work together as a family.

I know many first generation have a heartistic connection to True Parents, but not necessarily to the True Family. On the other hand, many Second Generation have more of a connection with True Family but not with True Parents. That is not right, because parents and children are one. The heart of parents is constantly looking forward with the children. Don't you want the same thing for your kids? That is the same for everyone, whether you are a King or a pauper. Your children are your extension. If your children, grand children, great grandchildren do well, then you are doing well.

That is why you have to bring the perspective of a family to our movement. If you look at it this way, you give value to everyone. This is the time to walk and work together. Instead of fighting and bickering about whose time it is, all first generation should think, "These are my children, I want them to take more responsibility." Don't parents think that when they get older they will become like children again, and want to rely on their own children? The First Generation should have that kind of heart and connection to Second Generation. And the Second Generation should have same heart toward First Generation, and want to take care of them. The reason for past conflict was because they didn't see from this perspective.

Leave your baggage behind! This is a new time. People who are in the age group between the second generation and the older first generation sometime describe themselves as the "1.5 generation." But 1.5 is not whole number so it has no real home.. You should providentially be the bridge between the generations.

This is the family time. The focus is the family. How can we move our movement together? That is the question. I am glad many church leaders are working together. Through these events I want to bring different constituent bases together and build God's kingdom. You will have 18 days of opportunity for me to speak. General synopsis is that this is a time for a new paradigm and a new era. We have to work together.

I know Japan has tremendous burden. As an elder brother, I empathize deeply with Japan. I am not a politician, and I am ready to put my neck on the line. I do not give care about position or power. I see this as Father's work. As a son I have to take the ownership.. You should do it too. As a leader you should realize you are the problem; put your neck on the line and do whatever it takes. Then there is nothing our movement cannot do.

In some ways this message is a bitter pill. If I come and give you bitter pill, you may want me to leave as soon as I can. In Korea, when they came to realize why I said these things, many people admitted their past mistakes and agreed with the need to work together. My goal in Korea was not only to ignite the fire but to change the mindset so that Korea could truly position itself to have a new beginning. Do you want me to do this in Japan?. Don't you think that this is a time when we as a movement should reflect and change the way we think as a family, and really move together into the settlement age? That is why I am here.

Father has explained that throughout the restorational era he was moving through the absolute vertical axis. But in the settlement age, the time has come for expanding to the horizontal centering on and absolute 90 degree. In the family you need 3 positions: the Father, the Mother and the elder son. That is why the Messiah has to restore the elder brother, the parent and the kingship. The Elder brother has the mission of connecting the vertical foundation to the horizontal foundation.

That is why I came to Japan. I want the Second Generation to be excited about who they are and what they are. CARP will change to focus on its mission of witnessing. The overall result will be the strengthening of all of our foundation. So please pray and support, then we can change the foundation together.

Thank you very much!

25. CARP Meeting

Claude Aubert
March 31, 2000

The following is an account of Hyun Jin Moon's meeting with CARP leaders and alumni which took place on Friday, March 31, at the Columbia road church in Washington, DC. I am posting it to the list for all the CARP ghosts on this list. Since my account is pretty long, I split it into tow parts. The first part describes the meeting, and the second one contains some of my thoughts about it.

At 1:15 pm the meeting with Hyun Jin Moon (Hyun Jin Moon) started in the main hall of the Columbia church. Hyun Jin Moon had a microphone attached to his tie, and he was seated on a chair on the floor level of the church, facing a group of about 70-90 CARP leaders and CARP alumni (AKA CARP ghosts). Next to HJN, behind another microphone, stood Howard Self, the moderator of the discussion. Two more microphones were set up in the aisles of the church to amplify the comments of the participants.

Howard Self opened the session and explained that Hyun Jin Moon would like to first listen to comments from CARP members about their experiences from the past. Howard asked the participants to "please share what you felt worked, and what you think will work in the area of witnessing" and he explained that those who had a comment should form a line behind the two microphones located in the aisles.

Before the first speaker could make his comment, Hyun Jin Moon got up and explained that he wanted CARP to return to a more evangelical focus. He asked people to not just give personal testimonies from the past, but structure their comments in a way that they could be applied to the organization of World CARP. The purpose of this meeting was to find out what kind of witnessing strategies worked in the past, and what could work in the future.

The first person to offer a comment was David Harvey, who talked about the importance of energizing campus activities with the help of a traveling troupe, inviting guest speakers for campus events, having a campus newspaper and serving the campus community. Hyun Jin Moon interrupted him several times to ask questions and make comments, something that he kept doing throughout the rest of the meeting.

Dan Fefferman, national CARP president under Tiger Park from 1980-82, talked about the World Student Times newspaper, which at one point had a weekly print run of 50,000 copies and was distributed on 50 campuses. He reminded us that universities, as other institutions, have a long memory and remember mistakes we made in the past. If as a result of our witnessing efforts on campus students drop their studies, universities will hold that against us for a long time. A short term witnessing success comes at the price of having greater difficulties to create a successful student movement in the long term. Dan described the ideal situation of a center where most of the members were students enrolled in their studies, which naturally attracted other students to come over to the center. He expressed his hope that CARP can be a real student movement that serves the community and encourages students to finish their studies.

George Kazakis emphasized the importance of consistency in campus witnessing. He pointed out that campaign style witnessing brings short-term results while service projects bring long term results. He regretted that many times we returned to street witnessing when results did not come right away instead of persevering on campus. He compared the differences between the two strategies to the differences between hunting and farming.

The description of the commentaries of these first three speakers will give you an idea of the type of comments that were made at this meeting. About 20 speakers got a chance to make their points, and it would be too much to list all of them. (I couldn't do it even if I wanted to, since I missed some when I had to leave the meeting twice to move my car to avoid getting a ticket in the 2-hours parking zone.) Instead I want to focus now more on Hyun Jin Moon's comments.

Over the period of the 4-hour meeting HJN reminded us at least half a dozen times that the purpose of this meeting was to focus on witnessing strategies. He explained that CARP had a public mission, that we can never forget. "CARP will return to its evangelical roots and bring new members. CARP should be the evangelical component of the Unification movement." Hyun Jin Moon made it clear that he didn't think that CARP was responsible for the education of the 2nd generation. He said, this should happen in local congregations. "CARP cannot have too many different goals to focus on, and it cannot do everything."

When Kitty Wojcik suggested that we hire a marketing firm to do the witnessing for us, and instead use our manpower to staff workshops for the new recruits, Hyun Jin Moon seemed to get excited. He got on his feet and walked over to the microphone where Kitty was standing and asked her: "Do you want to initiate this program?" He went on to explain that he didn't have the resources to finance such strategies, and that the CARP alumni should take ownership of such programs. "Put your money where your mouth is" Hyun Jin Moon said, and he used this phrase many times more throughout the meeting.

The first comment that seemed to meet Hyun Jin Moon's expectations was Tony's description of the street witnessing campaign that took place in San Francisco in the 80ies. Tony provided lots of factual details, down to the number of witnessers involved and witnessing tools used. Hyun Jin Moon liked the this style of reporting, but he seemed somewhat disappointed when he heard that the number of people that joined through this campaign was about 200-300 over a period of about 5 years.

At the end of the sharing HJN again explained that the purpose of this meeting was to discuss witnessing models and learn about the pros and cons of different strategies. He told the alumni to take ownership for social programs. "Do it yourself and then offer it." He said that "my efforts will not be spent in America, but Korea and Japan where there is a strong CARP foundation. The sad reality is that CARP in America needs to be supported by other countries."

"Our biggest problem is our small size and our welfare-mentality. We don't have ownership anymore. You might believe in TP, but not in what they created. (...) If anything is going to happen, it's going to happen in CARP. I need committed people to make it happen. If American members don't want to take responsibility, we will find somebody else. (...) If you are willing to make that kind of commitment today, I have hope for the future."

Here are some of my thoughts on the meeting with Hyun Jin Moon:

Toward the end of the meeting Rev. Schauffler commented that CARP has been in search of an identity for many years, and I saw lots of heads nodding in agreement. Rev. Schauffler pointed out that if CARP wants to be a student movement, it needs to be on campus only. Other people offered similar comments, and pointed out the problems with switching back and forth from campus witnessing to street witnessing. Several people mentioned that it is difficult for members to witness to students if they are not students themselves.

I could not tell from Hyun Jin Moon's comments if he really understood the concerns many people expressed about campaign style witnessing on campus. If Hyun Jin Moon wants CARP to be the witnessing arm of the Unification movement first and foremost, maybe CARP should abandon campus witnessing altogether for the time being. But then the "C" for "collegiate" in the name CARP would no longer be appropriate.

Hyun Jin Moon wants CARP to become the "evangelical component" of the Unification movement. Let's assume that HJN will find an effective witnessing strategy that brings many people to workshops where they are inspired by Divine Principle and decide to become full-time members. But what will happen to such workshop graduates? Will they join a group of young people whose main goal it is to witness to other young people? Would anybody really want to join such a group? How would new members keep their inspiration?

Maybe this is not really what Hyun Jin Moon has in mind, anyway. He did mention that his next task was to come up with a mission statement for CARP. I hope that this will clarify things a bit more.

I got the feeling that the days when CARP members serve as staff in the PLA organization are numbered. I didn't hear Hyun Jin Moon comment directly on PLA, but I got the impression that he doesn't regard PLA as an activity that will help CARP in its evangelical outreach. Hyun Jin Moon seemed to say that any kind of social programs or service projects should be organized by church communities on local levels. I hope that this doesn't mean that PLA will suddenly find itself without manpower and support.

Hyun Jin Moon sees that the core membership of our movement is getting older, and that no young people are joining. He said that without new membership our movement will eventually dwindle. And since effective witnessing does not take place in any part of our movement right now, he feels that CARP is the only hope to rekindle the spirit of witnessing. This meeting didn't allow for a discussion of the question why no successful witnessing is taking place anywhere in our church anymore. I got the impression that Hyun Jin Moon did not want to get into any analysis of this kind. During his inauguration speech he stated that "the more our movement looks inward, the more it will fail."

I am still trying to digest this. I question whether it is really helpful for members to be told to "take ownership" and to "put your money where your mouth is" by someone who is not willing to discuss the reasons that prevented these members from doing so until now. At the same time I can see that Hyun Jin Moon is in an extremely difficult position, and that he cannot take on all the problems of our movement. I wish for him that he will find many people ready and able to take ownership.

Hyun Jin Moon has a lot going for him that will increase his chances for success. He has a winning personality, and one cannot help being impressed by his eloquence, intelligence, self-confidence and charisma. Hyun Jin Moon knows how to relate to Americans. He received all of his education (including a masters degree in business administration from Harvard University) in America., yet at the same time he says that "inside I am really Korean." This will help him to be a bridge or a mediator between True Parents and members.

I am glad that I attended this meeting and I am grateful to Hyun Jin Moon that he took the time to listen to all of our comments. Much of what was said wasn't what Hyun Jin Moon wanted to hear, but I am glad that people had a chance to say it anyway.

What I didn't like about this meeting was the fact that absolutely no reference was made to Jin Hun Park Moon during the afternoon session, and even during the inauguration ceremony of Hyun Jin Moon as World CARP president in the evening Jin Hun Park Moon's name was only mentioned once by Mike Balcomb, president of American CARP. At no time did anyone thank Jin Hun Park Moon -- who was not present at either event -- for his investment, and at no time did anybody say anything good about the achievements of CARP in the six years under his leadership. I thought this was very sad.
