40. Kobe Rally

Hyun Jin Moon
July 3, 2001

A mighty whirlwind is beginning that is resonating in its swirls. Do you think it will lose its gusto or get higher and wilder every minute and hour! Yes or No?

Before I begin, I would like to break some conventions, but since I am your guest, I will do it only if you will permit me. As you know it is very difficult for me to stand still. I feel confined. If you permit me, I would like to use the whole stage as my podium. Will you also give me the permission to carry this cup of water? Thank you very much. Domo Arigato.

I see many young people here in the front! It seems like only yesterday that I saw only old people in the front row [at last year’s rally] I wonder, am I at the right rally? I cam to light a fire here in Kobe! Do you want to make it really hot today? Yes or No?

What happens if you make me so hot and blow up in front of you, is that OK? [Yes]

You have spirit of young people. It is so contagious that I get more and more excited. The topic for today’s rally is Service for Peace: a New Paradigm for Ideal Youth and Family. In the past, we heard much talk about the need to establish peace. However, up until this point, no one ever found the root of establishing lasting peace. Peace has eluded humanity ever since beginning of human history when Eve seduced Adam. Ever since then, we see the remnants of the problems that made peace an elusive dream.

For this tour, I gave direction to CARP leaders that we have to bring young people of every background, every walk of life. We have to bring VIPs, from areas of academia, politics, religion, etc, so that we can bring all factions under one roof and build an everlasting peace.

So many times the word peace has been banged around. Many brilliant people thought of it from political, religious economic points of view but none found the solution. If they had we would be already be living in a peaceful world.

Today we are standing in the dawn of new era. It is third millennium since the birth of Christ, and the 7th Millennium of biblical history. We have entered into the 21st Century. Number three is the number of perfection; number seven is number of completion. It was on the 7th day, after God finishing his most divine creation, humankind, that he rested on the Sabbath. We have entered into a special time, when number 3 and number 7 have combined. We have entered into the 21st Century and of course 21 is 3 multiples of 7. The concurrence of all these conditions and factors is not just by chance but is a condition set by Divine Providence. We are at an inflection point where the course of humanity can change.

As you may know, True Parents held God’s Coronation Ceremony at the beginning of this year. In that ceremony, they were enthroning God as King. If God were already our king, then a word such as peace would not be a foreign term, or have remained elusive for ages. It would have been the reality. The world would have been very different. The question is, where is that kingdom in which peace truly exists, where God’s sovereignty exists?

I love these large questions because I just graduated from UTS, where we spent a lot of time dealing with these big theological issues. From the theological point of view, where is God’s kingdom? Many people will say many different things! In the world of confusion you have many opinions. Even if the truth exists, it is dimmed by the impact of many other opinions.

How did God move throughout history? In the providential history, God tested the individual and shook the bedrock of his or her faith, to make that faith and conviction so strong, that if God invested more it would not falter and it will not shake. In history, we can learn of the lives of men and women who have been tested by God. Regardless of all the persecution, tests, and challenges that were thrown upon them, their conviction and faith in God did not shake or falter.

Throughout history, whose voice came out loud and clear over time? It was those men and women those who were truly chosen. God’s providence didn’t develop by happenstance, but by the power God’s blood sweat and tears and the efforts of those who wanted to live for the sake of God, who wanted to bring about God’s providence despite all suffering.

What was the purpose of God for humanity? Was God’s purpose for us division -- ethnic, national, racial and even religious divisions? Was that the purpose for God? When God looks at humanity, with what eyes does God look at humanity? Our original mind tells us that God is our original parent! Then with what eye would God look at us? Of course, the heart of the parent!

Let me ask the young people sitting here in the front row, do you know the heart of parent? Yes or No? You say yes, but is that really true? Many times, you would rather play Nintendo more than studying, wouldn’t you? Do you really know your identity?

What about my identity? Am I Korean or American? Most Korean people are a little short, yet I am six foot tall, a little bit taller than even some Americans. When I go to Korea, I stand out. People ask, what kind of mix is that kid? Where did he come from? Koreans have round faces and shallow noses, but my nose is high. Even Koreans don’t know what I am! On the other hand, when I go to America, even though I can speak language fully, I am another yellow face. Do I look like an American?

My character is so Korean and in one sense, I don’t even have a home. But don’t feel pity or sadness for me. Because I do not define my home based on national geography. My home is where God is, my home is where True Parents are, where the True Family is.

So, you smart young people. Do you really understand the heart of parents? No, not really. Many young people don’t understand heart of parents. When parents tell you to do something, you don’t always understand it. Yet, would a parent ask you something because he or she wanted to do to harm you or to help you? Of course, they want to give good counsel.

One of the reason why Jun Sook Nim couldn’t come this time is because she is already nine months pregnant. Her stomach is getting bigger and bigger. The amount of attention that goes into the heart of a mother is so great. Another gift from God is her breast, so that she can feed baby. The very essence of mother is going to that child. As a parent, all your attention, all your hopes, all your dreams are invested in the child. There is no other relationship where so much sacrifice is made.

A couple of minutes ago, I explained that God has the heart of parents. Don’t you think God had that kind of attention to the creation of man? Doesn’t God have as much hope and aspiration for his children that human parents have for their child? Absolutely he did.

What was that dream? What was that aspiration?

You here at Kobe are luckier than the people in Fukuoka because I am going into more details here. Fukuoka is the door by which all major religions came in. Buddhism and Christianity came through there. How about Kansai region? What does this represent in history of Japan? This is very important location. Here in the middle of this region, Japan was united under one leadership. It was here that Japan’s vision to conquer the rest of Asia began. What resonates here is not only for Japan but goes throughout the whole of Asia. Kobe is sometimes called the US Airport, because all western culture comes through here. This area of Japan has tremendous importance.

Do you want me to give a special message for Kobe or the same message I gave in Fukuoka? If you want a special message, that means I have to speak differently at every rally! Yet I have no written text. I have no outline! So that must mean this message must be coming from somewhere profound and mysterious, not just from the top of my head. So listen carefully!

Heavenly Father stands in the position of parents. Like parents he invested everything, sacrificed everything. Parents through their sacrifice learn the first experience of love. What makes the parent/ child relationship so unique? Both the child and the parent must both make total investment. It is love of absolute investment.

If I truly want to talk about world peace and service, then we have to understand the root and the origin that these things come from. We have to understand the root and origin of where peace comes from! Amen!

It is through the vertical relationship that one first learns the true meaning of love. When we go back and back all the way to the beginning of human history, we realize that we ultimately end up in front of God. The vertical love that our parents had is divinely touched by God, because God is at the end and pinnacle of that vertical point.

In all major religions, there is the idea of individual salvation based on individual relationship with God. Their concept of spirituality is rooted in a person’s individual relationship with God. But was that Adam and Eve’s purpose? No, they were to inherit divine love together, not as individuals.

We have so much divorce in the world today. In America, the rate is around 50%. How can marriages and relationships stay together? If the relationship is based on physical attraction, do you think that a couple would stay together into old age? No matter how much makeup you put on and cosmetic surgery you undergo, eventually age catches up with you and the beauty fades.

Many young people don’t understand this. I was driving down here and I saw one boy who had a yellow hair. I thought oh, I can go and talk to that American tourist, so I approached that person. But as I got closer, I saw that the roots were black. When he turned around the face I saw was a yellow Japanese face! Many are also piercing themselves because it looks very cool. Young people are into physical attraction and stimulation. What happens when that physical attraction fades?

How about you young people? There has to be a root. Where is the root? The love that keeps husband and wife for all eternity can only be qualified as being true love. The fact that we have to qualify a relationship as ‘true,’ indicates that there are also false loves. True love is the love that one learns in vertical connection to God! When that love between husband and wife is united based on God, it will be everlasting.

What about brotherhood? Japanese want to make a brotherhood relationship with Americans, Koreans and others, don’t they? Why hasn’t it been possible? True everlasting brotherhood has to be established based on a vertical axis, based on the vertical relationship of divine Heavenly Father. That is why a family without Parents is a divided home. Only with the presence of parents can all children can unite tightly. Without parents and their tradition, there would only be constant bickering and struggle.

Look at all these international politicians jockeying position for greater influence! That kind of horizontal relationship will not go beyond even one generation. For this reason, superficial means to establish peace do not last long. It is only with a divine relationship with God, based on True Parents, that a relationship of true brotherhood can be established. The position of True Parents has to be established first. Those of you who were here on last year’s tour will remember that this was not the easy process.

Once Adam and Eve fell away from God, a new true family had to be established. Only in the True Family is there a substantial solution for peace. Instead of going into theological explanation as to the reason why peace eluded humankind for 7000 years, we can reach the simple answer that it was because God’s original ideal was not established in the beginning of human history.

Adam and Eve were to establish a true relationship as a son and daughter of God. After they matured, they should have been able to complete the three blessings to be fruitful multiply and dominate all things. What happened?

What is the glue that can hold the divine family together? It is True Love. The impulse of True Love is to live for the sake of others. A genuine love of service comes directly from divine parents. In a true and absolute investment for service, a true family, true love, true life, and true lineage would have been established.

Last year I explained that we had entered the Settlement Age. The Completed Testament Age, the era of the Fourth Adam, the time to build God’s substantial kingdom. Where is God’s kingdom? What is it? Is it some physical kingdom with geographic boarder? No, the infinite, eternal and unique God would not limit his kingdom in that way. The kingdom is the ideal family. It is in there infinite scope and depth of love can be expressed, and it is there that God can dwell. It is there, that one world and one family one world under God can be built up. Amen! Amen!

This is the kingdom where God can dwell. Therefore, it is appropriate that in this year 2001, after Coronation of God on January 13th, that the young people are gathered here to carry forth this divine tradition, this divine dream, not only in the island of Japan but throughout the world! Can you young people carry the dream? [YES.] Can you carry the mantle of faith and conviction? Then God can commit his eternal foundation upon you. The foundation you build would be so steady and strong that God can come and dwell in you. You can build God’s kingdom on you!

Truly, a whirlwind is brewing. It is being started by this message of Service for Peace. Those two words should be like husband and wife. In the past, when people talked about peace they didn’t talk about service. Yet in that sentence service should exist. Because in service, the eternal ideal of true love exists. The person who is willing to live more for the sake of the other person than himself cannot be opposed. Even if convention holds us back, people want to feel close to those who serve. Isn’t that why we feel so close to those who love us? Isn’t it why we feel so indebted to those who invest to us?

We must break down all different barriers that divide us. When man or woman stands naked before God and before heaven, he or she is no different, whether Korean, Japanese, American, etc. Who created all these different conventions and barriers, that made humankind unable to see true commonality between us? It was not God.

It is time to shed the past and stand anew before God. There is only one Master, one Will, and one Dream that is worth committing oneself to. That is to build one world and one family under God. Amen. Amen. Amen. This is the powerful message of service for peace.

Why service? When we look at world today what are young people doing? Can we see a true filial son, true patriot, true saint, and true holy son? No. We do not see the world that is in true alignment with God’s original will.

In Fukuoka, I said that Japan is wealthy nation, rich in material resources. Japan has received tremendous blessing, but look at the young people. All the economic wealth in the world has not brought a solution to your young people. On the contrary, you are now seeing crimes that were unheard of before. You are seeing immorality in young people that was never seen in the past.

Is economic material wealth the solution to the problem of young people? No. If I ask people what they care for more, children or your job, they will probably say that they love people more. But when we see young people they are getting more lost. This phenomenon is not exclusive to America. It is the same situation in Japan and other countries too.

Although our children have a roof over their heads, are going to school and living comfortably, we are living in the age more urgent than before. We are losing our children at the altar of selfish individualism. Under that circumstance where can ideal family exist? Where can God dwell? Where are God’s kingdom, God’s church, and God’s love? None of that can exist.

Young people are the future of the world. If we are able to move the young people then we can move the future. When we look at the young people today, what future can we see? That is why the message of Service for Peace, and the promotion of service activity that is rooted not only in ideas but in substance is exactly the truth that Japan and the world needs, Amen!

This message today is Service for Peace. We are bringing those two words together as if they were a representative of husband and wife. You can never establish true peace without true service, and there is no true service without true peace. If you are someone who inherits the true sprit of service, then you can establish a true family where true love, life and lineage exists and from which a true filial son, patriot, saints and holy son can come out.

When I talked with VIPs, they often say, "Your father always talk about peace! But what is the solution for peace? One has to be true peace maker to establish true peace. And where does one learn to become a true peace maker? In the family.

True Peace comes from the four realms of heart and three kingships, and the three generations representing a continuum of past, present, and future. All of these things come from the family. The four realms of heart represent relationships between parents and child, different sexes, between brother and sisters. If you learn to become the peace maker in your family where 4 realms of heart and 3 kingships exist, you can become the people of true peace. This knowledge is not cognitive, abstract knowledge but rooted in substance and experience. How much more practical can you get?

This is the true formula for peace! Building an ideal God Centered family where true love, life, lineage exists. The impulse and glue that holds the true family together is true love. True Love is living for the sake of other, living in service to others. We gathered here today to hear the message of peace that will resonate throughout Japan, rooted in the ideal of service for others and living for the sake of others.

Think about it, how great will it be for young people here to go to their communities, for sake of their nation, or even leave their nation and go to developing nations and help? Those experiences of service will lay the foundation for young people to be the true peacemakers. Amen!

People of Kobe! Are you ready for that challenge? Yes or No? [YES.] You know you can’t come to rally and not be challenged by someone from Moon family! Therefore, I will challenge you today. This dream of creating one world, one family under God is not just my dream. It should be a dream for all of humanity that is aspiring to build one true peace that transcends all generations, all different divisions between sexes, all existing divisions between nations and cultures. This is the vision given by True Parents, to create one family under God, and live the ideal of Service for Peace.

Those of you who want to live according to this ideal, stand up and raise your hands! AMEN!

39. Fukuoka Rally

We live in the age of the Coronation Ceremony of God’s Kingship. Heavenly Father has aspired to this since the beginning of creation. Heavenly Father couldn’t liberate himself; only through the power of True Parents could He be liberated. You must understand the many conditions that had to be set to make this possible. To explain this fully, I need to give you a sermon, but I’ll try to explain it briefly and in simple terms.

Simple terms are best, because God’s expectation at the beginning of creation as very simple … the ideal family, the Three Kingships, and the Four Great Realms of Heart. God wanted to participate in the ideal family. He needed an ideal man and woman, ideal parents and children, and ideal brothers and sisters in order to express his original ideal. The first family was lost, however, and all of human history has been a process of restoring the mistakes of the first family. That resulted in 6000 years of indemnity. Could God take responsibility for this? No, only the restored, ideal Adam and Eve could fulfill the original will of God; this can only be done by True Parents.

As you know, the course of the Unification Church was not originally meant to be one of suffering, but we have gone his way because of the failure of Christianity to receive True Parents in 1945. The Coronation Ceremony was a substantial offering of dominion to God over both Heaven and Earth. True Love, True Life, and True Lineage were finally fulfilled.

All Blessed couples should realize this, but many do not. Because of this, I held 21-day workshops to educate all members under 40 about God’s Kingship, the Settlement Age, and the Realm of the Fourth Adam. In the Old Testament age, the Hebrews established a covenant based on law. The New Testament is built on a covenant that is based on faith. The chosen people have always been the ones who are responsible for the covenant. This is the age when the covenant is not legal or faith based, but is etched in blood. Finally God has dominion over the blood lineage, and thus the Kingdom of Heaven is built through Blessed Families. You must understand the responsibility and blessing that Blessed couples have in this age.

During the Inheritance and Development Tour, the message was clear. I gave the vision of a new era, with a core of spirituality rooted in family. The bond is not just a superficial legal one, or one of only internal faith, but one that includes the whole person, and allows for the establishment of God, True Parents and True Family. Here begins a new human history that can expand in both space and time. The first and second generations must work together. I don’t know how many heard this message and took it to heart, and how many were deaf to it. The family must now move forward as God’s ideal.

Why Inheritance and Development? I know the way young people think! They always want to look forward and think about the future, but they don’t like to consider the past. That’s why I started with inheritance, and recognizing the value of the past. Development suggests the promise of the future. God’s work and effort has been substantially etched in history, and it was the past conditions that prepared for the present stage. I’ve heard many stories about the sacrifice and suffering of our members, but that must be placed in the correct context. True Parents and True Family have always been the final recipients of criticism or ridicule because of the failures in our movement.

Father has always lived for Cain. At this time, more than ever, he wants to rejoice in an ideal family, and stand together with his children and grandchildren. But True Parents’ commitment has always been to love Cain, in the belief that Cain would then support and love their Abel children. To be honest, however, Cain not only stole my parents, but also misunderstood the True Family rather than providing love and support. The hurdles needed in order for me to take a position of leadership are not easy. I take this position not out of rejoicing or happiness; it requires constant death and rebirth.

The responsibility of True Children is great. We stand on the great legacy that True Parents have liberated God, but who will liberate True Parents? God couldn’t liberate himself… can True Parents? No. Only the children can liberate True Parents. Because of the fall, God’s dream was not realized. Don’t True Parents have a dream and expectations as well? The call I made to members and families was to go back to the root and the essence. Put aside all else, and go back to the root. Why are we here? What are we meant to fulfill? What are True Parents’ expectations? The parents can never be liberated if the household is divided. The parent of a divided household is bound to hell and turmoil. The Unification Church family must unite as one to bring blessing the world. This is not an exclusive vision, but is meant to include all people. This is the meaning of Service for Peace.

Now that the first and second generations are reconnected, the Unification Church family must stand united as Abel to the Cain world to bring about restoration. We must send our young people out to serve. This will start with CARP. We go out to restore the elder sonship, and bring Cain back to God’s bosom under God and True Parents. So much has to be done. This is the most desperate age in history, even more so than the time of the Cold War threat. Why do I say this? Is it just because I’m and idealistic youth? I say this because everything sacred is being dismantled by youth today. Every country has a youth problem today. Why? It’s because their focus is on self-centered individualism and materialism. How can you make God-centered families in that environment? How can you make a true husband and wife, or true family? Even our own second generation has to have this clarified. There’s rampant family breakdown because of the free sex disease. The responsibility of young people is great in this age. You older people here must take interest in the youth. To change the world or change a culture or paradigm, you need young people. There needs to be cooperation between three generations. This represents the past, present, and future, and the continuum of humanity.

The works of the first generation, second generation, and third generation are all crucial; especially the second generation, as they prepare the way for the third generation. The transition time is always the most critical. Now more than ever we need to stand as one, and live for the whole purpose. We need to have a public mind that symbolizes the expectation that God has.

Tomorrow will be the first rally in the Service for Peace tour. Japan has carried much burden in the providence, but still her role is crucial for the future. The spirit world is not some distant place, but is right here with us. How should we live in preparation for spirit world? What conditions should we set? We must set conditions not only in preparation for our own passing to spirit world, but for the sake of our legacy. Young people need o understand about the spirit world, not just the material reality.

Maybe you expect this kind of talk form me because I’m True Parents son, but my training is from the material realm of Harvard Business School. I’m very aware of the temptations and lure of the material world, but can you take that with you to the spirit world? The Hyundais and Dae Woos of Korea are now in bankruptcy. They thought they had a lot of value, but was it eternal? No, it can easily be lost. What is it that is absolute and eternal? What can you take to spirit world as well as pass on to your children? True Love, True life, and True Lineage. Ideal Family.

How many blessed couples really know this? As parents, many blessed couples don’t want their children to suffer. I have always sent the young people out to witness and fundraise. You can always go to school later, the colleges will eagerly accept you later in life. But your own faith and conviction can only be earned through your own activities and sacrifice. Youth is the time to accomplish this. As they grow, young people must realize that they are historical agents to further God’s providence. The tragedy is that they often have to face the hurdle of heir on parents holding them back. Ironically, this is the same situation as the first generation faced. They received opposition from their parents to following God’s will. What would happen if True Parents had guided me in that way? Should I have just gone the individual way? Do you think I’d be here today if that was the case? Clearly not.

Lineage means a covenant in blood. You don’t choose most of the most important things in life. You merely have the choice to make the best of the opportunities that you’ve been given. Heaven’s expectation is only one: create an ideal family. This way you learn how True Love, True Life, and True Lineage really exist. This is the kingdom where God can dwell. A continuum of service to God is necessary. You must have the conviction of faith to substantiate God’s kingdom. That’s why I’m here.

I will initiate service projects in Japan, Philippines, China, and finally Korea. Service for Peace is a worldwide concept. Our Abel youth can go into Cain’s world to serve and restore Cain. Cain can recognize Abel as the rightful elder. I will establish a foundation that will support these international service projects. Local and national CARP can initiate service projects and get support. All the projects don’t have to come out of World CARP HQ. We will send Japanese college students to African villages to live or the sake of others, and to experience and own that understanding. We can send Koreans to the CIS. After 5 years of this interaction, those people who have learned the lesson of true service will be the peacemakers. First, we need to overcome nationalism. When you really see the needs of others, you want to serve. What better way to establish one world of peace?

Please take this seriously. I’m a youth leader, but I always end up talking to older people. That’s not fair! Maybe you’re not so old that you don’t remember your youth? This is a new age. You have no choice but to enter that new age. Therefore, shed your skin, and become a new person. They say that older means wiser, but wiser in what? In fallen ways? Cynicism? Doubt? Loss of hope and vision for God’s ideal? I’ve faced those trials. I found that hope is all we have. This dream I’ve spoken of will be alive. Hope will always be alive as we enter the settlement age.

Amen

36. The Lifeline for Entering the New Age

Hyun Jin Moon
March 30, 2001
Quebec, Canada

Remember that there are two types of knowledge. It’s the experiential knowledge that will give you the deep insight into that knowledge. That’s why I’ve said, you have to have the foundation of absolute love, faith and obedience to God and True Parents. That will be the lifeline for you as we enter the new age. You do not stray. So I want you to make that deep commitment, that whatever you do, wherever you go, you will have absolute unity with the mission given by God, True Parents, and True Family. You are the first class of this special 21-day workshop. Do you feel that this workshop was absolutely necessary at this time? I explained that this workshop has to be a reorientation for leadership in the settlement age. Therefore, as leaders without knowing this, how could you be connected to Providence? One thing that I noticed is that institutions like UTS are one, two, three years behind. Remember when in the 1990’s after the 30,000 couple blessing, how the standards was loosened to include more and more couples. Many members complained that the standard was degrading, that we are getting sinners instead of saints. Just like in Jesus’ time. And this was the attitude of many leaders too. We’re facing this issue now with the Blessing.

What was God’s original providence? Was it to save only a portion of humanity, or all of it? If you look at principle, we look at all the historical things that need to be restored. Do we not talk about Cain and Abel, about the position of True Parents?

If you look at the history of all religious groups, this has been an issue. It’s a struggle of Cain and Abel in the religious community. Do you think that God wanted to just save the Abel type religious people, or was it that he wanted the Abel type to save the Cain type in order to restore His whole family? Our mission was not only to save ourselves, to secure our own lineage, but it was to restore all mankind. This was the true mission of a True Abel. Therefore I told you that you’re totally missing the point. It’s an issue of the saints, the Abels, to bring the whole family together centered on God’s Will.

You should be proud, and set the tradition in which other Blessed couples can follow, a tradition of heart, of sacrifice. This has been the tradition of our True Parents. Look at our family pledge… they all end with "centered on true love." True love is the tradition of loving others first, to live for the sake of others, sacrificial love. When we look at the outside world, the traditional way of thinking is self-centered.

Why do I emphasize witnessing? The more our movement only thinks about ourselves, the more we’ll be further away from the tradition of God, True Parents and True Family. Isn’t that why I explained in the first day, the more I give warning to the leaders of our church, the more we look at our responsibilities from an institutional viewpoint, and not from a heartistic one.

If you do not adhere to the tradition of God and True Parents, then you will be added to the dustbin of humanity of another religious denomination. This institutionalized mentality I really do not like. This means that the organization or movement is static, not moving. Not progressing, but if you look at God’s providence, it has always been progressing. Until that ultimate goal is reached, we should always be moving forward. Because religions were institutionalized, it became the impediment to God’s new vision. They thought that they were the chosen people, without realizing that the reason that they were chosen was for the purpose of saving all of humanity, not just themselves. It’s the same thing with you Unification Church members. You have the tendency to make the same mistake. To not realize the new providence, which is SOOO important in the eyes of God and True Parents. Before this workshop, you would have thought only about your family, the Unification Church family, without thinking about all of humanity. True Parents have been toiling on this earth not just for your sake. Up until this point you would not have had this awareness.

All of you say that you believe in God and True Parents, yet you do not truly understand what God has been hoping for since the beginning of human history. I know that you did not know just by the way you reacted when I called this workshop. These are the people that Father has been training for 40, 50 years, and they still did not know the importance of this workshop. Because they didn’t understand God’s original desire. They saw True Parents and True Family as being separate. When I think about this, this blows my mind, because it goes against every single universal law. Even animals understand this better than you. Their whole purpose of existence was to pass down the genes to the next generation. What do the family represent, it represents blood lineage.

Even the top leaders in the movement did not know this. They were struggling with their own problems, trying to interpret God’s providence in their own eyes. You have to get rid of all the baggage from the past so that you can be aligned with God’s providence. That’s why as we enter this Settlement age, I realized how important it was for us to shed our old skin. That we stand naked in front of God, True Parents, True Family as well as our own conscience. So that we can be true recipients of God’s Will.

If this providence of rebirth does not happen you will not be in the position to usher in this new age. I would have to find someone else. Second generation understand this. That’s why I called them together. Special grace is given not for your sake, it’s for the sake of salvation and restoration of God’s entire family. That’s the reason why men and women that work for God always must be living by the principle of living for the sake of others. Secular humanism and atheistic communism taught the exact opposite. Do you think these were agents of God, or Satan. This is why we have 182 nations in the world. The formula that Satan has always been using throughout history of selfish love … what is the ultimate result? It brings destruction to family, to society, to the world. It is the paradigm of fallen families. I am moved when I see the structure of the Korean familial model. I’ve traveled all around the world, and I found that although it’s not ideal it most represents the realm of three kingships and four Great Realms of Heart. Even in that model, if that family only thinks of itself, it’s own, the most ugly model comes about, to the point that you even want to run away from it. Self-centered individualism destroys everything that should be held valuable. Up to this point what Christianity cannot understand is our understanding of love. Agape love is held as the highest form of love in Christianity, an individual internalization of understanding God. So, when Father says that True Love can only be manifested through subject and object partnership, they can’t understand it.

True love is putting others before your own self. This is the age that all that we aspire to build should be brought to this world. In other words, the Principle that we say we study, should not be just a conceptual reality, but should be felt, experienced and lived. Just like a child cannot deny his identity came from his parents, you have to have that concept of God, True Parents and True Family. If you have this attitude, you will be able to respond to God’s providence. I know that each and every one of you are at a different level. But from this time, if you truly commit, and unite with the mission that I give you, you'd be setting the condition to understand more completely that this is "my" providence. The reason why you don’t feel like this, is because you are not yet part of True Family. The reason why we pray in our own name is to truly inherit the blessing of being a substantial member of True Family. And you will have ownership over the providence. If you dedicate your life to this goal, you will be a true saint, a true filial son. If you’re a woman, you will be a true holy daughter. This is the tradition that defines who we are. Unless this tradition becomes your tradition, you are not a member of the family.

I’m going to end with what I told the Continental directors yesterday. I also mentioned this to the second generation blessed children yesterday. Things like power position money… how many times has Father said that these are not important. I know that people might come to the conclusion that the higher you are in position the closer you are to True Parents. Physically the way you are born are different. Some people are born, smart, some stupid, short, some tall, some with talent, some without, but if you ask any parent, they will say that they love their child more than any other. If parents feel that way, how about God? When we talk about true equality, it cannot exist unless it’s in the realm of True Love. I asked them what do you think the true responsibility of first generation was? I know you aspired to be recognized in front of True Parents as a leader, to be used by Parents. Did you do that to be used by True Parents, or loved by True Parents? If you’re desire was to be used by True Parents, then position would be important to you. Recognition by our movement would become very important. And you become very political focusing on things like power, and position. But is that truly what Parents value most. Yes, if there’s a very capable talented person, they will be used, but unless the heart is pure, they will not be moved. For the sake of the expedience of providence you need to use people with capability, but it does not mean that you look at them highly.

Let’s look at Sang Hun Lee, among the 36 blessed couple, he wasn’t recognized highly in our movement. Even when I look at Unification Thought, I see many things wrong, even in his intellectual understanding. The reason why he’s a great man, that even God recognizes him in spirit world, was because of his level of attendance to True Parents. To this day, whenever Father thinks about Dr. Sang Hun Lee, he is very moved by him. Father is now 81 years old and he told me that as he gets older he thinks more about those who touched him heartistically.

So, what is it that you should aspire for? You should be aspiring to be that man or woman, whose level of attendance is such that you move God, you move True Parents, you move True Family. But I know that many well known 36 blessed couples are not thought highly of by Father. Although in the history of our movement, they will be recognized, wait till they go to spirit world. How many historical people do you know? They’ve all accomplished amazing things, yet what position are they in spirit world?

We will make an imprint on other people’s lives. Imprints especially on God, True Parents, and True Family. Those of you, after making the pledge who aspire to follow this kind of standard will do great things. When I say great things, I’m not only talking about things in substantial physical form, but the greatness that comes from God’s perspective, True Parents, and True Father’s perspective. Just because you might not get the recognition now, don’t think that that is the end. Eventually, blessing will come. Especially those that move on a more selfish course, although they might shine now, their end is not good. Those who try to live on the principle of living for the sake of others, though their star might be dim now, eventually they will shine brighter than all the stars in heaven. You are young, and I tell you this because you have the whole future ahead of you. Therefore, follow the warning the advice that I give you today. If you commit to this, I tell you great blessing will come. If you do not, your end will not be good. That means your whole tribe and lineage. That’s why in history you constantly see ups and downs. America was at its highest prestige in mid 20th century. Although they claim that they defeated Communism, did they really win the war? They are losing their family, their society, their nation. The salvation of America can only come not with the model of one nation under God, but rather one world under God. America is a chosen nation of God. The more selfish it becomes, the more America will decay.

That’s why I want you to make a clear commitment today, before you go out to your mission. The 21-day is over, you’ve already made your pledge, this is the day that your mission begins. Those of you that are willing to take on this mission raise your hand. AMEN!!!

35. Completion of the First 21-Day Special Training Workshop

Hyun Jin Moon
March 29, 2001
Quebec, Canada

I want to congratulate all of you for completing the 21-day special training workshop. You are the first class of this special training workshop in the seventh millennium in providential history, third millennium after the coming of Christ, and the 21st century, ushering in the new age of the realm of the fourth Adam and the settlement age. We have entered a historical milestone in the movement. My hope is that you have learned a lot during this workshop. That which you learned I hope, will change the rest of your life: as a blessed couple, as a true family, and as a true leader. Because from that point on, God’s substantial kingdom can be manifested on earth.

Why did I create this workshop in such a manner that you would be tested in every single respect? Physically, spiritually mentally etc. You have to be the bedrock upon which God’s kingdom stands, because if the bedrock is loose then everything on top will tumble. My original intention was to test you to such an extent that even 50% could not graduate. I wanted it to be that much of a test, a trial, a time in which one is shedding oneself of one’s own skin and being reborn. Do you think a rebirth process is an easy process, or is it a difficult and grueling process? You think about a baby that lived nine months comfortably in the world of fluids in its mother’s womb. When you think about that baby being born into this world, his birth is a death and a rebirth. The life in the womb ended, so it was the death of that life. But in the process of being born into this world, one could say that it was reborn. Now you think how excruciating that process is, when that baby comes through the mother’s birth canal, a very small hole that the baby has to come through. Is that easy or difficult? It is an excruciating process.

So too should it be the process of being reborn in a spiritual and internal sense. I wanted to test you and try you in every single respect, so that you struggle physically, internally, emotionally, intellectually, so that you struggle even with your faith. Because I know that if you struggle with your faith and you make the resolution after searching through everything, the commitment that you then make is one of absolute faith, love, and obedience. Although you have graduated from my 21-day workshop your tests are not over. From the moment you make the pledge … how many of you reviewed it internally? That pledge that you sign will be the covenant that you create with God, True Parents, True Family, and especially with me. Therefore I gave you the pledge yesterday so that you can review it thoroughly, reflect on it and pray on it. That decision is going to be only your own, but if you make that commitment that pledge will be binding in an absolute and eternal way. That will be the standard by which you not only judge yourself, not only as a blessed couple or blessed family, but also as a leader. This pledge will also be the standard by which I will judge whether you are a true leader or not.

Do you understand, yes or no? That is why although this day is a day of celebration; this day is also a day of solemn promise, because it will be the first day of your true ministerial life. How you embark from this day forward is up to you. Do you understand? Those who cannot make that kind of commitment do not sign it. I’m going to make that very clear right now: those of you, upon reviewing the pledge, that cannot sign the pledge, leave. I give you permission. Please leave now. I will not give you a second chance like this. So if you cannot make that pledge, leave now. Remember that if you make the pledge the commitment that you make will be absolute, eternal and binding. Okay, then I will go on.

Why is this so important? All throughout human history never was there such a time as this. Remember that all 6000 years of biblical history has been a history of restoration. If you think about all those thousands of generations before their effort of restoration from the old to the new to the completed testament age of sacrifice has been for this time to come that has now come. Where the expectation, the ideal expectation that God had of humanity, could be manifested. Where God’s promise to mankind could be fulfilled.

Therefore the first steps are the most crucial steps, for they set the precedent for the next steps to come. Our mission and our goal as the second generation is to create God’s substantial kingdom on earth. As a representative of God, True Parents, and True Father. How fearful this is, you have to know. Right now, heavenly fortune awaits us. Whether you realize it or not, I know it. Yet in order for us to receive this heavenly fortune there is still the 5% condition that we have to set. If you cannot fulfill those 5% then however much heaven wants to bless you, that blessing will not come. Therefore I clearly explain; don’t think that I need any of you. That goes the same for the 1st generation. Please don’t think that I need you. God’s heavenly fortune moves through a direct vertical center, and that center in this generation is here with me. I’m a very bright person. I know what the situation is in our movement. I know that members are connected to their leaders and how political things can be, but if they cannot connect to that center then nothing can be established. We cannot be so arrogant as to think that we alone are the ones that are moving God’s providence. Yesterday I gave the example of Christianity as the most influential religion in the world today and how it developed to that position, do you think that that came about through human effort alone, or due to God’s divine providence?

Father was kicked out by Christianity and had to go to the lowest dregs of hell. Do you not think that Father’s life has been tattered by those who constantly failed him, and those who purposely tried to destroy his ministry? In spite of all of this, Father was able to establish the foundation that we stand upon today. Why? Because it was God’s Will and Providence. What was the end for each and every one of those who persecuted our True Parents? In Korea I explained in front of the leaders, I’m not a politician and this is not a democracy. We are here because we want to establish God’s will and there is only one Will and one Providence. The question is whether you are in alignment with that Will.

So even telling me to treat the second generation in such and such a way. Be quiet. I’ll kick their butt. My decisions were not political. Those decisions are the lowest on my totem pole of priorities. Mike, what was it that I told you when I came to World CARP? I said that it was the blind leading the blind. You had the attitude that we are so happy etc. You look at universal law. What choice did we have in who we are? The question is not how happy a life I live, but how I live my life in accordance to the will of God. So especially in America I know what the situation is. I’m not a stupid guy. Initially it is not going to be popular, but do you think that it matters to me. If I can communicate it to a handful then I can show to the rest that there is a future in this movement. You were so blind by your own personal ambitions and histories that your original minds could not be lifted to the possibility of realizing God’s dream at this time on this earth.

One thing that you don’t realize, even though when I look at you and you are lacking in so many ways, you are all that God has. How did our True Parents establish this foundation? Who do they have at this time? Who do they have? The true son or the true daughter is the one who makes his parent’s dream his own. So think about it. Especially those who only want to follow if it is done their way. Are you truly living like a true son or true daughter?

What you don’t know is that the dream came first from Heaven, for seven millenniums of providential history, one day his sons and daughters would come under his direct dominion. Over and over again in history even upon meticulous preparation that foundation eluded God over and over again. It was only that time of the True Parents where God’s dream was able to be realized. All of restoration providence has been a providence to build a condition of restoration of indemnity, so that this age can be ushered in. That is why, whether you are working or not, you are standing in the position of inheriting that dream from God and True Parents. That is why I say that this day is the first day in our new life as a true leader in our movement. You have to know this clearly.

Japanese vice presidents, stand up. I will ask you, please answer me honestly. The reason that I ask you to stand is that you are the most unworthy to be here. So you have to prove to me now that you are worthy to graduate. I know what is going on in Japan, don’t lie to me. The fact that you are here and are given this special grace is a great honor to you. Originally you should not be allowed to come. But what I care about is what kind of a person you become from now. I will take it upon myself to make true men out of each and every one of you. If you still have a resentful mind now, then you do not have the condition to graduate from this workshop. I’m sure that some of you were thinking up to this point that you have done nothing wrong. If a person cannot see himself his reflection truly in the mirror then he is blind as a man and he will be blind as a leader. You have to know yourself clearly in order to become a leader. Even though there were four, five, six of you who did wrong, then as far as I’m concerned you are all implicated. Do you know what it means to represent the True Parents and True Family to the members? The members in Japan may have a shallow faith, and they may not have a deep understanding of Divine Principle, but they gave everything that they had. You show me one Korean that did the same thing. They may have a deeper faith and better understanding of Divine Principle, but you show me one Korean who did the same. Can you think about your own financial situation when ministering to these people? I’m thinking that you were not mature enough to take on such a great responsibility. So I ask you again, do you think that you did well. (I made a mistake). You don’t know how blind you were. I want each of you to give a financial contribution back to the Japanese church. I will use this fund for the second generation in Japan.

You are all the same, even though I made an example here of the Japanese vice presidents. Forget everything, I will forget everything too, as long as you leave the past behind and create your new self. Do you understand? I know that many of you are interested in new missions, but you should have the attitude that whatever mission it will be, no problem. You should be proud to be engaged in God’s providence and work to develop the providence and also yourself. Like I said, you will all be asked to sign a pledge. I will reiterate: that pledge is an absolute eternal commitment that you are making. Not only as a man or woman, but as a leader; not only as a blessed couple, but also as a blessed family. If you break any of the pledges the certificate will be taken back. So it is really up to you. So today is your first day as a leader in our movement in the settlement age. For those who really live up to this pledge I will use them to build a new culture of heart as we are building God’s kingdom on this earth.

So I do not have to talk so long today. It is all in that pledge. Those who make your commitment to me now today, raise your hand.

Jin Man, explain about that pledge and the background for creating it.

Jin Man Kwak:

Hyun Jin Nim took a long time to prepare this pledge, a long time before the workshop started. Hyun Jin Nim prepared it during the leaders meeting and he reviewed it many times. Looking at this pledge, you will feel that after the coronation ceremony True Parents emphasized four points for leaders, and as an addition, Hyun Jin Nim has prepared this pledge for you.

I will read it.

Originally written in English, then translated into Korean, Japanese, Hyun Jin Nim selected each pledge by himself.

Sovereignty, our responsibility is in substantiating God’s will and building God’s country.

True Parents have emphasized this point of absolute faith, love, and obedience for a long time.

How to serve and support, attend our True Family is the key, so that we can eventually inherit the blood lineage, this is important as a family.

This is the attitude that the True Abel should have. What is the true Abel? It is to sacrifice for others, not to live for personal gain. Not to abuse this entrusted authority for a selfish purpose. This is entrusted to us by God and True Parents, so you should not use this authority for yourself but for the establishment of God’s will.

True Steward means that once you have gained the trust of the master you must do what the master has dictated. It is important that public assets are entrusted by God and true parents, so you must be very careful with these and be responsible and accountable

As a leader, not only the second generation in our church, but the second generation in the whole world. Of course the second generation in our church, but more than that you are responsible for the second generation in the whole world, and you need to lead and guide them.

As a leader you need to lead in order to change the culture. What to do in order to liberate God, True Parents, True Family; you need to change the whole culture. We need to guide the whole world towards that new culture.

This is the pledge to accomplish all of the other pledges, especially during this crucially important time of the settlement age and the era of the realm of the 4th Adam. We need to keep and uphold the laws of heaven, this is vitally important.

The point is that this is not something that we pledge this once and finish, but we need to pledge this every day, and we should always remind ourselves of our pledge. You pledge to work to become a true child that can finally be admitted to the True Family. You must clearly understand the important content of this pledge. This text reflects Hyun Jin Nim’s heart and the content of his direction to us.

Now we do the pledge.

34. Build A New Culture of Heart

Hyun Jin Moon
March 28, 2001
Quebec, Canada

Let’s open those windows. Please sit down.

So what should I talk about today? Have you learned many things here? What did I talk about yesterday? What explanation did I give you yesterday? I gave you an explanation of what the new paradigm means. And what is the new paradigm? It is to build a new culture of heart. When I talk about a new leadership paradigm, what am I talking about? I’m talking about what it means to be a true Abel. The individual that stands in that position does not just stand in a position of grace, but it is a position of tremendous responsibility. So you have to know very well what this responsibility is, what the meaning of this responsibility is. Do you think that I as Moon Hyun Jin can ever change my identity? If I do not like who I am, can I ever change my own identity? There are so many young people today that think they can change their identity in this world today. Because the outside society thinks that they can change their identity, does that mean that I can change my identity? Everybody else seems to think so? Why not, do we not believe in democracy? You all are privileged to know that there is something that goes beyond the dictates of men, and that is the Will of God. God’s will is made up of unchangeable and immutable principles. In other words, even if I wanted to change who I was, to deny who I was, irregardless of what I do, the fact of the matter is I can never, ever change who I am.

Can parents change their position, siblings change their position, or children change their position? Those identities and relationships are absolute, eternal and unchanging. Therefore, the kids in the outside world saying: "I can change my own destiny, I can marry who I want"; thinking they can decide everything they want. Are they smart or are they stupid? You are the ones that are smart. You are the ones that recognize that in order to be fulfilled men and women you need to realize what your responsibility is and fulfill that responsibility in front of heaven. So you have to know very well: who am I, what am I, what is my responsibility?

There are two ways in which you have to look at this: First, who are you? Are you a blessed couple? You have to understand what it means to be a blessed couple. Second, you stand here as representative leaders of those under 40, therefore I am looking to you to lead the Age of the second generation. So you have to know what it means to be a true Abel. These two points are absolutely fundamental. You have to know these two points, what it means to be a blessed couple and a true Abel. Until now you have realized that, through being a blessed couple, you have been engrafted unto the true lineage. Do you consider the True Parents to be your own parents or not? But now you have to take it one step further. If we are truly a blessed couple, if the true blessed family is a building block of heaven, then the kingdom of heaven will be the creation of a true family, that is, the collection, the construction of all these families. Right? The next thing that you have to understand is that I am a member of God’s true family. Up until this point you have understood the first two points that I mentioned, being cut off from Satan’s lineage and that the True Parents are your parents. But you have to realize that being blessed couples means that you have been engrafted into a true family. When I look at the audience today, it is mostly Asian, but I see many different faces, like white and black. I also see many Korean and Japanese faces. Do Koreans think: "Japanese are my enemy", or do they think: "They are my brothers". How do the Koreans here think about foreign nations? This is a problem, when we look at this world, there is not a concept of one family. When you come from Korea, you represent the Korean perspective, when you come from Japan you represent the Japanese perspective, and when you come from Europe you represent the European perspective, there is no concept of one family under God.

This concept of one global family under God does not exist in this world. How about in our church, does that kind of a concept exist? The concept may exist, but how about in reality? Is the reality the same as our concept? The fact that it is not is a real problem. That is why father developed the international blessing. How do you bring this type of division and separation together, how do you resolve these divisions and separations? The only way is through love. What is the most intimate and deepest relationship that a man and woman can engage in? It is the relationship between husband and wife. When receiving the blessing, did you think: "I am a representative couple of the world, and when I get blessed I will resolve the conflict that exists between my respective two nations and cultures."

Some people might have thought this way, some people may not have thought this way. Think of it this way. How do you bring about ideal citizenship and world peace? Do you think that it can be found in the corridors of the best universities in the world? Or is it that you can put the best professors of the world into a room and tell them to find the solution to world peace? Is it to get all the greatest economists in the world into one place and tell them to give equity to all people in the world? How about gathering all the political leaders in the UN and say: "You devise a solution to world peace!" Do you think world peace will come about? I don’t know. Many times you’ve heard Father say: "Principle is not a concept. It is reality." To stress my point I want to give you a story. You all know about Hoon Dok Hae conferences, right? I’ve been involved in them from the first one. I went to the first seven or eight conferences. In those audiences are political, economic, and social leaders, and the one thing they want to hear is concrete solutions to the ever-degrading societies of their nations. They are more demanding than you for concrete solutions. What do you think I spoke about? I gave them a 30-minute speech which captivated them. The theme was: the solution for world peace is rooted in the creation of ideal families. When I talk about an ideal family it is a family centered upon God. Why is it that the substantial solution to the problems of the world is rooted in the family? It is because it is in the family that people develop their social conscience. What does that mean? Is it not in a family that all the different relations that one experiences in one’s life are represented and manifested? When one talks about the intergenerational gap, does this not come from the fact that there was no good relationship between parents and children in the family? The reason that we see one nation hating another and one race hating another is that we have not resolved this between brothers in the family. The reason that we have men and women wanting to kill each other is that we have not established any true husband and wife relationships. If you follow this premise, that the relationships in the family carry over to all other aspects in life, then you can see how the distortions in the family can manifest themselves in the greater society and world.

So I told them, don’t think what I tell you is dogma, theory, concepts. It is the substantial reality that we experience directly in the family and the lives that extend from them. Do you think what I am saying is right or wrong?

So going back to my original question about blessed families. Do you think that in the relationship that you create substantially in your couple that you have found a solution to world peace? This is truly great to think about. It is this knowledge that you acquire in your relationship between husband and wife, that if you truly love each other, you are able to go beyond all the historical conflict that existed between your two respective nations and create substantial solutions. That is why I explained that those who have received international blessings, you are the agents of world peace. If you are able to achieve true love then you have found the substantial solution to overcome the two different worlds. Especially Korea and Japan, two nations that hate each other historically. Can a child that comes from a Korean / Japanese marriage hate either Korea or Japan? How could it? So is it a good thing to arrange such international blessing or not? The knowledge that you gain in your couple is more valuable than anything a professor could write on such a topic of world peace. This is because the Ph.D.’s knowledge is just conceptual, but the fact that you are an international couple means that you have found the substantial solution to these problems.

So is your blessing important or not? If you look at it from this perspective, you come to realize how important international blessings are. It is not just a man and a woman living together, but it is a man and a woman at the forefront of creating world peace by bridging two different cultures. Now that True Parents do not match anymore, do the second generation like this or not? Do you want to find your own husband/wife? If you want to find your own wife, will you go look for your enemy or your best friend? (Enemy) Don’t lie! True Parents’ concept is to go find the enemy. If you want to undo all those barriers, you have to find substantial solutions. The way to do this is in the relational context of the family. That is why if you look at some of the married couples, they find someone who is just a close friend and think: "How great it will be to be with this person" Then often after two or three years they just separate. There is a lot of that, right? Even in the outside world, they say "opposites attract" and talk about "complementary pairs" A couple should be the great uniter. The further the worlds of that couple are apart, the greater a span they will cover in their unity. If Korea and Japan want to create a good relationship, who will be the best ambassador to bring about peace between Korean and Japan?: A Korean/Korean or Japanese/Japanese couple or a Korean/Japanese couple?

How can we break down the barriers that exist between enemy nations such as Germany and France? Is it just by communications, and that’s it? Don’t be so naïve. Just because you dialogue doesn’t mean anything. Just because you talk a lot doesn’t mean that you solve anything. Will the EU be able to solve all historical bitter differences, rivalries and hatreds of its member states? If you are French and your wife is German and you develop a loving relationship, will your children be able to say, I’m only a French or I’m only a German. The historical divisions that have been entrenched within these cultural and national barriers will be overcome. So what are we doing through the international blessing? We are creating a new world order. We are developing a world in which those who have participated in the international blessing have the substantial solutions to creating a world of peace. Until now many have criticized our international blessings, right? At the Hoon Dok Hae conferences I said: "If you truly understand our concept, how can you be against our international blessings?" More important than the UN summits of the world, we are creating a grass roots movement to substantially bridge the divisions of the past and create a movement for true world peace. Whether you realize it or not, the activities that we engage in with blessed families, we are bringing about a new world order, a new kingdom which is not just conceptual, but substantial.

That is why those blessed couples that are able to overcome all those difficulties and have truly loving relationships are those ambassadors who can overcome national boundaries. It is difficult enough to understand the world of the other sex. How much more difficult is it to do that when at the same time you must overcome national differences? I’ve gotten kind of sidetracked, but your families have this kind of value in being agents for world peace, because you carry the substantial solutions to creating world peace. How great is that!

So this comes back to the question of how one learns. Why do I keep on mentioning substantial, why do I keep on focusing on that versus just concept? Who knows the theory of epistemology? (Mike Balcomb explains: Epistemology is the study of how one learns. The two schools are one the one hand that one learns through study and understanding, on the other that one learns through direct experience.) This debate has been going on for centuries. Why do I, as a religious leader, go into this kind of philosophical questions? As Mike explained, one is that one learns through understanding, and the other is that one learns through direct experience. I’ll make it very simple. You need both types of learning. However, what do you think stands in the subject role, and what stands in the object role? Have you ever thought about this? How is it that I as an individual really learn something?

Let’s say that I want to know about motherhood. Rather, let’s say a woman wants to know about motherhood. That woman may get married and have 12 children. And lets say another woman also wants to know about motherhood, and she goes to the university and gets 20 Ph.D.s on the subject. Who do you think knows more about the subject? Let’s say that she was totally uneducated, and she was not even pretty. But this other girl at the university was pretty and read every book that there is about motherhood? So which one is it? (The mother of 12.) So you have created a verdict then.

You are saying that it is experiential knowledge, something that you have direct ownership over, that should stand in the subject position. Scientist also believe that knowledge is only certain when we can experience it in reality; everything else is relegated to the area of theory. This theory of knowledge is very important in defining our value systems of where our greatest value is derived. Lets go back to that example of international blessed couples. Thinking about the husband, through his marriage to someone from an enemy nation, do you not think that he will have more knowledge about overcoming substantially the difficulties than any ambassador ever could? Why am I badgering this point?

How do you know that love exists? Through experience. If love were relegated to theory, then it would not be real. Because men were meant to be the object of love, is it not through experience that man really learns? If you were just in a container cut off from the rest of the world, could you learn experiential knowledge? Why? Because it is through having give and take that you learn something. This is what the Christians did not know; they thought that the highest love was so called agape love. You must realize that true learning comes from experiential learning. How does a child know not to touch fire? Do you explain the process of combustion to this child, or does it touch the fire and realize: "Ouch that hurts, I better not touch that again." That is why understanding what is in the subject role in the theory of epistemology is so important to our mission. If theory is so important, then it means that the individual is overemphasized, and that reason, intellect, the brain becomes the highest form of humanity.

That is why to make a long story short; the true learning process is experienced based and abstraction is in the object position. It is not institution of higher learning that one truly learns, but in the family and through experience.

Because of that the family is so important. That is why all of restorational providence was to restore the ideal family, where the Three Great Kingships and the Four Great Realms of heart are represented. In the course of one hour, we have found the solution that philosophers have been searching for many millennia! First we outlined or mapped two philosophical schools, then we established what their proper relationship should be, and then we established how man learns. So we learn through experience. Therefore what I want to emphasize to you is that the message that Father gives is not something theoretical but is something that was gained from substantial experience.

What implication does this have for the new leadership paradigm? What is the settlement age? It is the time when God’s substantial kingdom is established on earth. God’s substantial kingdom is built on the earth. That is why you have to realize more so than ever before how important your blessed family is as a building block for this kingdom. The blessed family is the building block for the kingdom of heaven. It is within the family that you, your husband and wife, parents and children, will have the substantial knowledge to unlock all the relationships that you face in the greater world around you.

Yesterday I talked about expectation. We do not define our role or our purpose in life, but we have to rise up to the expectation that God has of each and every one of us. Didn’t I start off today by explaining just that? What in our life did we truly choose? Did we choose our parents, our brothers or sisters? If you look at the things that were the most defining in your life, which of them did you have any choice in? The reason why we have free will is that we must choose to align ourselves to the universal law and to what Heaven’s expectation of us is. There is not much that we choose in who and what we are. But the question is: how do I choose to live my life according to God’s will and purpose, to universal law? That is why I have been talking about this yesterday and today, as you have to understand this in order to fulfill your responsibility as a blessed couple.

In our movement, when I see the second generation growing up in America, Korea, Japan, just as the other people in that nation, with the same cultural and historical traits and bitterness then I think: "Oh, our blessed couples did not get the point." Even though these international blessed couples were meant to bridge these gaps, their kids have just inherited these differences directly from their parents. I take the education of the second generation very seriously, but I realize that it is not jut a matter of educating the children, but also the parents. Somewhere along the way that message was lost. How then can we build a substantial kingdom of God, a substantial true global family? We need to take that principle which our True Parents have taught us and substantiate it in our families. There has to be consistency in your thinking and your actions. Do you think that as a leader you need to know this or not? If I talk about what it means to be a true blessed family it has implications for what it means to be a true leader.

As a leader you have to put God, True Parents and the members before yourself, that is the standard by which you should judge yourself. You have to live first for others. Why? Can you have a loving relationship if you just want the love to come to you or do you have to sacrifice? The only way that a love relationship can be established is by constantly investing and eventually that will be reciprocated. As a leader, representing God and True Parents, you need to invest in your members in the same way that you learned in your family. If you had really become a true couple, you would have felt this. If you truly understood this, do you think that position, money, power, and so on would have been on the criteria of things that we want to accomplish or acquire? These things are secondary. The most important would be: how do I fulfill my responsibility in front of God, True Parents, True Family, the members, and my own family.

Therefore I told you yesterday, I hate position, because I know the responsibility that comes with it, and the sacrifice that comes with it. So I asked you in my speech at the beginning of this workshop: "Now that I became YFWP president, do you think that I have more responsibility, or that it is the same?" You said more but I told you that it is the same. True Parents have already asked me to take responsibility for the whole movement. This was the weakest point, our youth, coming into the settlement age, and therefore I had to focus first on CARP. Before I came here I talked to the Continental Directors about the importance of building up the youth movement of our movement.

I’ve heard many people say that when I was just vice president of the movement I seemed to care for the whole movement, but now that I became CARP president, I just care about CARP. Do you understand how God’s providence is moving? Two years ago, as these Continental Directors will testify, Father said that even if we have to sacrifice the Unification Church we need to resurrect CARP, the young people movement. Why? Because now is the time of the second generation. Why did Father say this? All his life Father lived first for God’s Will and sacrificed his family over and over again. Do you think he would say this just because his son is now responsible for CARP?

What is the greatest challenge to God’s kingdom on earth and to the establishment of ideal families? If the blessed couple is the building block of the kingdom of heaven, what stands in the way of the building of such ideal families? What is it in this world that stands in the way as an impediment to the creation of ideal families? What led to the erosion and the degradation of the families and societies and nations in the Christian realm? Was it not all the seeds planted during the counter cultural revolution by the Christian second generation after World War II? Was it not the acceptance of free sex, homosexuality, atheism, materialism, drugs, feminism, etc? Who brought this forward? You reap what you sow. Is not what was sown the satanic culture, the antithesis of God’s culture, that is brining about such decadence today? In Nations that have previously been considered the bastion of Christianity. What is the greatest impediment then to the creation of God’s kingdom? It is the new satanic culture that was spread to the world after World War II by the Christian second generation. That is the irony of it all. That is why this is a time and an age now that we’ve entered the period of renewal, the period of perfection, that we bring about a new world culture, a counter-counter revolution, to build God’s substantial kingdom centered on blessed families. You need to have that kind of conviction! This is a period and time that we have to right all of the wrongs that were done during the last 40 years. We have to bring about the fulfillment of what was not achieved during the last 40 years. We have to start planting the seeds that will bring a total revolution. This is a task that we are about to undertake. Do you want to undertake this task? Yes or no? (Yes!)

If we undertake this task with the level of sincerity with which you said yes, then truly we can bring about substantial change. Purposefully, I have avoided any comments about my substantial vision on how to bring this about. Why have I avoided this, why haven’t I explained that to you yet? Even though I do not explain it, do you think that I am not thinking about it now? If I explain the concrete vision then you will all get up and start working right away because you will realize that eventually we will win. The workshop is about understanding the new leadership paradigm, about the new culture of heart, the heart of a leader and the heart of Abel, so you need to understand this background first in order to be able to unite with the external vision later on. Otherwise you may interpret the external vision in many different ways. So I wanted to see whether or not you will be able to follow my direction absolutely first. (Yes, we will follow!) We will have to see whether you will be able to do this.

So the onus is up to you. What you make of this workshop is really up to you. You have no one to blame but yourself. Do not think that the tests have been in this workshop alone. The real test will be what kind of leader you will be from now on. Remember that it is the internal base, or foundation, that is the most important. Each and every one of you has to be a person that I can trust intimately with my life. Only if you can be that kind of a person can you have the right to stand as a leader in the time of the second generation. Don’t think that once this workshop is over, everything is done, and therefore you can resort back to your old self again. You need to make a break from your old self and from this point forward lead a totally new life based upon the standard of the new leadership paradigm. If you can do that, please raise your hand.

All of the people gathered here hold a lot of responsibility in our movement. I was told that in Asian nations, if you are a president, you can never hold a position beneath that for the rest of your life. Is that right or wrong? (Koreans answer right.) That’s true right? That’s a totally new concept for me. A totally new concept for me. Is that the case also in Japan? (Answer not clear.) My first question is: who made this stupid rule up? Who made it? What is True Father’s way? If someone is in the highest place, he also needs to be able to come down to the lowest point. Is that true from a Divine Principle point of view?

Lets say that you become president at the age of 36. But because naturally you have not developed to the full extent of your abilities yet, you would still need to learn many things. But because of this stupid rule, from then on you stop growing. That means you stop developing yourself at the age of 36.

Where did I come from before I got to UTS? Harvard Business School is the hardest school to get into in Harvard University. I met some people at that school. Top politicians, top business people, people who ran not for profit organizations, generally just the most successful people in the world. Do you not think that they ask you questions like what made you so successful? What did they all say? Do you think that those people would have been that successful, that capable, if they followed this stupid rule based upon positions? They had different positions in a company, and sometimes they went down and then back up again, so from the age of 36 to 46, they became even more capable then they were when they started. I really love Korea, and especially the Korean familial model, but when I look at Korean companies they are a laughing stock. This is because you do not develop your people. The only way to do that is to constantly challenge them. Once you master one thing you go do something else. So you constantly grow and develop your ability. So with this stupid rule, there is no recognition of the need to develop. I had a few Korean friends at Harvard Business School. None of them wanted to go work for a Korean company. Not one person. You want to talk about creating change? This is where it starts. You have to change the culture of leadership. Who made this stupid rule?

When I came to UVG, Ken Bates was the president. But because he was used to working a certain way, he just didn’t get it when I was talking so I constantly demoted him to learn more and more about the company. But eventually I sent him to Columbia Business School and now look at him. When I started he probably could not have gotten a job in the outside world at all but now he can get any job that he wants.

I do not believe in that stupid rule. With that rule you cannot make a person like Ken. The first generation may have acted like this, but how about the second generation? You cannot develop under that structure. You cannot learn under that structure. A true leader has a certain level of humility. He can assess what level he is at.

Mike Balcomb, what did I first say when I came to CARP? You would not listen to what I had to say, and you just gave me the same reports that I had already heard before. Your attitude was: I don’t need your help. But did you ever think that the CARP organization could be like this? You used to be the president of World CARP, but where are you know? (Mike answers: I am the General Secretary and it is much better this way.) My philosophy is not based upon right now; it is based upon what could be. When I came to UVG, who had heard of UVG 8 years ago? Nobody. It was a small insignificant group of companies. But I did not mind that. Because I knew that it would change in the future. Just wait and see where UVG is going the next 10 years. You should not be so concerned about where you are right now but where you could be.

I don’t put any emphasis on position; it means nothing to me. Do you think that when I meet someone with a Ph.D., that I am necessarily so impressed? I’m 32, but I’m not moved by whatever credentials that politicians have. I’ll tell you one thing right now. Someone with a position now who is not willing to learn will be surpassed by someone with no position now but who is willing to learn, and that within 10 years. When I look at young people I look at their potential development over time. In our movement we seem to think that we can turn a person into a leader within one or two years. That’s total BS. It takes at least 7 years. From now on we should have the tradition that my own desire to have a certain position is not the most important thing. The most important thing is that I learn and develop so that in future I can become a great leader. The best leaders are those that are the most rounded. That means that you need to have many different kinds of experiences and knowledge. Do you think I’m right about this or not? I’m sure that there are people who do not believe amongst you, but just wait and see. Watch those who follow my direction and see in 5 or 10 years. I wanted to make this workshop far more rigorous originally, so that 50% of the class would not graduate, so that I could pick the best ones, so that in 5, 10 years they would be able to do greater things. Do you understand what I’m saying?

Do you know what is the most important? It is a person’s conviction and determination. Only that one individual can decide that what kind of conviction he has. That is your 5% of responsibility. You have to realize that your coming here is a tremendous grace, the fact that you are able to participate in this workshop. To come within my radar screen. You have to know how precious that is. It is from this workshop that I was thinking to choose the future leaders for the settlement age. What have you done to be in this kind of position? That is why I created the condition that you rid yourself of your past life before you came to this workshop, you throw that past slate away, and that you re-determine what kind of a person you become.

When it comes to your responsibility in this movement, think about how you can grow and develop the most in this movement. Especially this stupid rule, throw that out the freaking window. Do you Koreans understand this? It goes for all of our movement, unfortunately that kind of thinking has existed within our western movement as well. We have to know and find humility. Let me tell you my honest feeling and observation. For me it is easier to work with outside people than with members. Did you know that? Remember what I told you, we have to have humility and be honest with ourselves. In the outside world, people take you at face value, and so they know where they are at. You don’t even need to talk about all of these other issues. Our members do not accept it when we tell them that we make mistakes. It is more difficult to accept criticism from your family than from members outside your family. In the outside world, do you think that a person will listen to his president or not? If he doesn’t he will be fired! But what about between brothers? The brother will answer to criticism that there is nothing that he’s doing wrong, because it is someone from within the family that is criticizing him. That kind of criticism is more difficult to accept. Why am I giving you this example? Because you are like this. That is the advantage that outside people have.

If one of the siblings is much more qualified than the others, will his brothers and sisters follow him or be jealous of him? In the same way, if we set up capable people as leaders and they expand the total foundation of our church, is that good or bad? Through the brother that can do great work, benefit comes to the whole family. Why is it that America is still at the forefront of everyone else amongst nations, looking at the United States as a large family. What kind of a system do they have in the development of their people that allows them to excel economically? Do you think that it was good that Microsoft developed software or not? What happened as a result? The economy grew at a tremendous rate, bringing benefit to all Americans and also beyond that to Asia and Europe. Why is it that America constantly produces these kinds of people like Bill Gates? Or Intel and the microchip. Why? Without America, would that come from Japan? Because America recognized that by allowing people with ability to take responsibility that the whole pie would be enlarged. Is it not ironic that a nation that celebrates equality also values individual achievement?

That is one of the reasons why I have always told leaders: they are always concerned about what piece of the pie that they are going to get. They are thinking: how can they get a bigger piece? People, money etc. All that is, is just a reallocation of resources. I’ve never cared about this, because that is not the point. The point is not how you reallocate the pie; the point is how to make it bigger. Right now there is an emphasis on witnessing in our movement. This follows a period where there was an emphasis on Blessing up until 1998? Why is this? Mike, did you even think about witnessing? (No Hyun Jin Nim, hardly at all.) I can tell you what World CARP was back then, which was just PLA and STF. So what did I explain? The process of the CARP organization just focusing on second generation education will lead to the eventual decline of the whole organization.

Was our church continually doing witnessing or not? Just look at the age gap in our members, and you can see that we have not been doing that. We had no concept as leaders on how to enlarge the pie, how to spread parents movement as a movement around the world, but we just focused on the institutions that we were in charge of. So especially when I visited Europe, in Hungary, you can see at which point the witnessing stopped, because the age of the members just capped off. I can tell you by the age of the members when the witnessing stopped. If you look at the Unification Church as an institution, as leaders you will be fighting for every single crumb of the pie. However, if you look at the Unification Church as a vehicle with which we will bring about substantial change, then you will be positioning yourself to contribute towards that change in the future. That is what changed in CARP, and that is what is going to change in YFWP.

I took an organization that was focused totally inward and turned it around to look outward within one year. I look at CARP as my frontline soldiers to conquer the whole world. They are the ones that should take our message to young people on the campuses and young people around the world, so that in 10 years time they can bring about substantial change in this world. I created two goals for CARP last year. The first was to create A-type members who can inherit the tradition. The second was to create a mass movement that will create political, economic, and social change in the world. Our leaders have been struggling with these two very goals because they saw them as contradictions. How do you make a mass movement to follow the strict standard that we expect of Unification Church members? It seemed like a contradiction. I said it is not because you do not understand what I’m talking about. That is why I created this thing called different membership categories that will give us the numbers as well as the people that will be able to inherit our True Parents traditions. When I think of outreach I do not see it just in terms of video centers. We need to develop specific programs for specific targeted groups. First because we recognize that we have niche markets, not everyone is the same. In the past we used to just copy our models all over the world. It is very difficult to implement such a thing because people from different parts of the world are different. So we need to recognize that there are different markets and that we will develop programs to cater to each of them in time. We will use CARP as an evangelizing organization, you just wait and see. There are different types of people; just as in the family all brothers and sisters are different from one another.

So we are developing several different programs that will connect with these different types of groups. All of these are new ideas that will transform the CARP organization. These are all things that were done in one year. Another thing is the CARP convention and conference. We need to have the educational material as close to the frontline work as possible. Many of you don’t realize this, but I am a very practical person. I can make practical solutions. The problem with the educational systems we have until now is that they are too far removed from the frontline work. So, the whole idea of the CARP educational system is to make the education as close to the frontline activity as possible. Once again, this goes back to the fundamental principle that education should be the support system of our activities in order to make our leaders more efficient and productive. For this continuous education in CARP I created the 3 pillars of education based on the model of a tree. The three are first of all the root, which is the Divine Principle and Settlement Age Hoon Dok Hae. Secondly the trunk, which is existing materials, programs, and best-practices that can be adopted within our movement. Thirdly, the branches and the buds, which is existing programs and technology from the outside that we can develop.

That is why when I look at all the different organizations in our movement, wait and see, not only because of the providential viewpoint, but from a substantial, practical viewpoint, for what CARP will be. In one sense when I look at CARP, although there are a lot of things that I don’t like, for example I think that the leadership of CARP in Korea is still young and inexperienced, I know that the seeds that are being planted now will all go in the right direction. I know that for a fact. Because all the conditions have been set until now. All of this was accomplished in less than one year. Remember, when I first took responsibility over World CARP, it was just America CARP, not World CARP. Now there is a worldwide structure. In other words an organization exists. Just wait and see. Especially all of you that gathered here, some of you will receive a new mission, some will continue their previous mission. But irregardless I want to you to have the mindset that whatever you’re doing you are learning to do more in the future. Remember position doesn’t matter, what matters is what type of person and what type of leader you become. Those of you who willingly want to participate in this new culture of heart, raise your hands.

Let’s have three cheers of Mansei.

33. The New Paradigm of Leadership for the Settlement Age

Hyun Jin Moon
March 27, 2001
Quebec, Canada

We start by doing our cheers, first our workshop cheer, then group by group.

This (the cheers) has really become good. It seems as if everybody is coming together as a team. Since everyone is coming together as a team there is great hope for what we can accomplish in the future. You have been engaged very diligently in this workshop until now, and although the workshop is coming to an end I want you to keep your spirit until the end. I don’t know if you remember the first time I talked to you I looked at the lake and I said that this is the time that the blossom of spring should sprout forth from the lake here today. You will have to set the precedent of a new type of leadership coming out of this workshop. Can you do that? Remember the standard by which we gather here today. Although we come from different backgrounds, I created one universal standard for all. You have nothing now, but you have to build something from now on. Just as the snow is white and clear outside, and there is something underneath with all vibrant colors waiting to sprout fourth. So should you be like this, and sprout forth the vibrant colors of our movement. Do you think so or not?

The change that you now have should be eternal and everlasting. Have you made that kind of commitment? What then, I ask you, is the new paradigm of leadership for the Settlement Age? In order for you to be reborn as a leader of our movement, in order to have a new commitment based upon the standard that I outlined, please tell me what the new leadership paradigm is. (Die for revolution!) Die for revolution? (Responsibility, accountability, initiative) These are all part of the puzzle, but what is it that we are really talking about here? As young people you like concrete directions, do you not? Do you think that there is more to concrete directions? We might look at the American democratic model, and we might say that it has good and bad parts, but what is the underlying principle of that democratic state? The manifestations of a democratic state has attributes. But what defines these attributes is the underlying principles by which that state was formed. Do you agree with this?

Let me say something else. The explanation that I’m trying to make is that: for you to make a substantive change, you have to understand the motivations behind that change. America is built not on just what you see today, but a comprehensive worldview and philosophy. Is that not true? Is that not why, although Korea has a democratic model, it is very different from the American democratic model, because behind that is a different culture, worldview? Is that right or wrong?

In other words, what is truly important when we talk about a paradigm is not the manifestation of this paradigm, but the worldview and principles beneath. Are they not the guiding principles by which you then guide that paradigm? What are we? Are we people that believe in heaven or not? In True Parents or not? If we really believe in heaven, we have to recognize that God is working through providence. And we have to recognize parents’ importance in that providence. Are not these two definitions guiding that paradigm that we are trying to set? Yes or no? Why is this workshop different from past workshops?

Up until this point this paradigm was not complete. What was the message that I gave you on the second day? What was Father’s original mission? To establish a true family, because that is what God wanted from the beginning of history. 6000 years of biblical history have been the work to restore one family. God as a parent, as any parent would do, wanted to prepare a foundation before he sent his son. I explained about the Israelites and their failure to receive Jesus. After that failure it took 2000 years to prepare for the Lord of the Second Advent. So when I talk about the history of the Unification Church, it begins with the failure of Christianity to receive Father. But you have to remember that the foundation of Christianity was prepared for 2000 years for the coming of the Lord of the Second Advent.

Do you know what the largest religion in the world right now is in terms of numbers? (Buddhism) No. (Mormonism) No. (Islam) No. It is Christianity. The Catholic Church has something like 1.2 billion members worldwide. You are talking about all of the people in South America and people in Africa. No religion has ever penetrated this much of the human population in all of human history. If you think about the story of Christianity it was a faith developed by the followers of a person who only had 3 years of public ministry. Please think about that. Do you think that Christianity could have risen to this worldwide level without God’s Divine Providence?

How many Koreans are here? Raise your hands please. Asia? Europeans? Westerners? Most of you here are Asians. We come from nations that suffer from the imperialistic powers of Europe. But do you know when Christianity really made its inroads in the world? Historically it was the 400 year period of European expansion throughout the world. Do you think that there is a clear line between "I’m a church leader" and "I’m a business leader or secular leader"? Huh? Is there such a clear demarcation line between religion and politics and economics? Did this European expansion not encompass a whole culture? Many of the European historians and thinkers will tell you this: Christianity missionized the rest of the world not just through a religion, but through a whole culture encompassing economics, capitalism, politics, democracy, and so on. They transferred a system through their expansion. The point I am making is that it was a transfer of culture and a way of life that affected every aspect of the way of life of those nations. What is then the new leadership paradigm? Do you think that it is one-dimensional? That it is just conceptual, theological? Or that it is all encompassing, culturally based and rooted, that represents God’s original culture of heart. Had Adam and Eve not fallen, what type of culture do you think would have expanded from that first family? Do you think that from that original first family only a political or economic transference would have taken place or that everything would have been encompassed in that culture. What do you think?

When you understand the three blessings, the only way that these blessings make sense, practically make sense, is if that culture resonates through all of the different aspects of humanity. This is absolutely right. In other words, from the original first family would have been a true culture of heart that would have been substantially based. Until now you have worked to attend True Parents, but what does it mean, the realm of the Fourth Adam? Rev Hwang says that it means that we pray in our own name, but what is the implication? It may be nice for you to hear this, but why is it that you have the ability to pray in your own name, as a central blessed family. What do we mean by central blessed family? The meaning is that you have engrafted upon the lineage of True Parents, that you stand in God’s direct dominion, as part of God’s direct family. That is why you have been given the blessing of having being able to pray in your own name as a central blessed family. When you receive a blessing there is certain responsibility and expectation that comes with that blessing. What is that expectation? We have three days to get into that. The important thing is that we realize that it is time to build a new culture. When I talk about a new leadership paradigm, I talk about building a new culture.

As leaders of our movement, what position do you stand in? You stand in the Abel position. Up until now many people did not understand the real meaning of Abel. The blessing was not given for Abel, but for Cain. When Cain killed Abel, did not Cain say: "Am I my brother’s keeper?" This phrase is telling, because it shows the crux of what Cain failed in. Siblings are born for siblings. The parental heart is to give the blessing to the one that will take care of all the other siblings. That is the true Abel, that is the heart of a true elder brother. When Cain said that it was indicative of what he did not understand. The younger brother should live for the elder. The most important is the one who has the responsibility. The responsibility of the Messiah is to restore the position of true elder brother, of parents, and of kingship, because these are the positions that were lost in the first family. During the restorational course, you as leaders were infallible, right? Condition for Cain was to unite completely with Abel, right? We always talked about Cain uniting with Abel. But Abel, as a true leader, also has responsibility. So when I talk about the new leadership paradigm, I’m talking about a culture of heart, I’m talking about a true leader, a true Abel. Before we talk about all the substantive changes, we have to understand the concept, the idea of a true leader. So what is a true Abel? Standing in the elder position. In a family, the most important position to educate the family is the elder brother position. Do you think so or not?

Why do you think that God set up this tradition in Korea? Did it come about by chance? Is that position just something you create, or is there a certain expectation to that position? There’s an expectation. As leaders in our movement, you stand in the elder brother position. Therefore, you have to understand the expectation that heaven and True Parents have of you. Koreans like positions, right? I don’t like positions. If you see it from the view of a true Abel, there is nothing good about responsibility, about position. I am also a Korean, but this I cannot stand. If you really see things from the view of Heaven, from Parents, from the true culture of heart, receiving the position of elder brother is the most difficult position to receive. There is a clear expectation because if the elder brother cannot fulfill his responsibility that gets passed down to the younger brothers and sisters. It is the same from an organizational point of view. If you as leaders don’t pass down the traditions, the members will not know True Parents heart and traditions. How have True Parents lived their whole lives? They have lived it for the sake of others. The position of True Parents, how close is that to Heavenly Father, but if you really understand, it is the worst, the most difficult position to be in, you have to sacrifice, sacrifice, sacrifice. Seen from this point of view, God’s position is the most difficult one to be in. So that is why I asked you, how can we liberate our Heavenly Father? By fulfilling our responsibility. Think about it, if children fulfill their responsibility in a family, parents are the most happy.

What you don’t know is that if we fulfill our responsibility we can liberate Heaven and True Family. As parents you know this very well. When a son is born, how much expectation do parents have of this newly born son? But if this son is not able to fulfill his responsibility, then the parents will be the most sad. Have you seen this before, or are you hearing it for the first time?

What is the role of a leader standing in the position of a true leader? It is the one who inherits the tradition of his parents. When we use the word true, we mean that the word true comes from the fact that it is connected to God. So what is the expectation that heaven and true parents have of such a leader? Do you think that that standard is based upon a leader that only thinks about himself? Or only his own members, and not about Parents? There are some elder brothers like that, no? If the responsibility of Abel is to unite with Cain, then maybe they can just unite based upon a standard that they agree upon, but not necessarily what Parents and Heaven agree with. I’m asking a question. If Abel has to live for Cain, and Cain and Abel agree on a foundation, if God and True Parents don’t like this foundation, is that foundation good or bad?

The authority that Abel has as a true leader is in order to bring the Cain type to the vertical center, to God and True Parents. You have to understand this point very well. Those compacts created upon human will have never lasted. Only those created upon God’s Will can last. The notion of world peace, economic equality, social equality, are these not all good things? Who dislike these? Yet, if you look at communism, was it not a solution to bring about world peace, social equality, and economic equality? What was the missing element? God. Throughout history you will see that men have tried to aspire to these goals. But those who have done it for humanistic reasons have always brought about greater inequality and greater injustice. Those who have done it centered upon God have been able to establish something greater. Providence has to move in accordance with God’s Will. As leaders you cannot be so arrogant as to think that you can dictate how providence should manifest itself. You cannot think: "The mood in the movement is like this so we should move like this etc." This is something you really have to be careful about. You have to understand this very well. God’s providence moves central axis line. Younger member often think as long as I accept True Parents and maintain my blessing, even though I go off and do my own thing, I am still connected to providence. Do you think like this? Maybe even you thought like this before you came.

I’m going to speak to you honestly. I explained that you now have the right to pray in your own name before I left. We have now written our covenant in blood. Why is blood important? Did you choose to be born? (HJN speaks directly to a Japanese brother sitting in the front row.) Did you choose to be a man? Did you choose any of your brothers and sisters? How many brothers and sisters do you have? (I have one younger sister.) Did you choose that one younger sister you have? Did you get married? (Yes.) Did you choose your wife? Do you have children? (Yes, two.) Did you choose them? (No.) If you haven’t chosen anything, what have you been doing so far in your life? The point is: we don’t choose that much in our life. Don’t be deluded by the arrogant way of the outside world; "I choose this and I choose that". What should the standard or criteria be by which we decide whether we lead a good life versus a bad life? I’m asking you, what is the standard? I already gave the answer away. There is a certain expectation that God has of you and your life, and your spouse, your children, your parents also have expectations of you. Do these expectations originate from you or from those around you? So what do you choose? The question should be: what can I do to fulfill the expectations for my life as a true husband, Father, brother, son. The answer can only come from God, in accordance with God’s original ideal. So what is a truly good man? What is a truly good woman? It is he or she who fulfills the expectation of God. By substantiating a true sonship or daughtership, true husband or wife, true father or mother. Qualifying true I mean in accordance with God’s expectation. Do you think this expectation can only be fulfilled by Koreans or by Japanese or is it for all of humanity? For poor or rich? Is it only for powerful men? Irregardless of your circumstances this is for everyone. It is an expectation for all men and women, irregardless of race, power, education and all the other different definitions and demarcation lines that we make to differentiate men. How do you think heaven views this? Do you think that God will value the man or woman with the most knowledge in the world, or the man or woman who has fulfilled the expectation in accordance with God’s will? How about the one with more power versus the one who fulfills the expectation? And so on… The answer will always be the one who fulfills God’s expectation.

If that is the case, if that is the universal truth, what kind of a question should we ask to become a good man? I always ask difficult questions, don’t I? Do we have to know our responsibility or not? Should we be accountable for this responsibility or not? Your conscience should hold you accountable. You need to know this well. The point I’m making is that we do not choose who or what we are, or even what our responsibility is, but we should do our best to rise to the occasion and do our best. For we will be held accountable by history. So having responsibility is not a good thing. You have to understand this clearly. Why am I talking about this? I am building a new paradigm of leadership. It is not just a political change of leadership or an economic reallocation of resources, it is all of the above. It is a change of culture. The culture of leadership in our movement. That is why you will all need to sign a pledge. For those of you who want concrete, the pledge will be concrete. But before you understand the substantial paradigm, you have to understand the concept and the viewpoint behind it. That means as leaders of our movement you have to take upon a new covenant individually, personally. That you will faithfully execute and represent the tradition set by God and true family in whatever mission or responsibility that you may have. Based upon whose tradition? Yours? Your own standard? Or that of your friends? Or the standard of God, True Parents and True Family?

If you take this seriously and recognize your responsibility in this era, you cannot turn you back on this. It would be like spitting on your own blood. Who here wants to cut off their hand? Raise your hand. I’ll cut it off for you. How about your ear, nose? The second generation needs to understand this clearly. If the second generation do not fulfill their responsibility, it is the same as this. That is why when the second generation thinks like this they really are far away from True Parents. When I hear this kind of talk, I think about all of the sacrifices that I’ve made in order to stand in this position. I’m a Moon, so when I get angry I really get angry and I could even take on all 300 in this room. Why am I saying this? Do you like hearing what I’m saying? Young members have to know this well; you cannot just live according to your own desire. When you receive the blessing you become my family. By just turning your back and walking your own way you become the worst enemy of my family. In the orient, the worst person is the one who betrays his family or his country. Why are they considered the worst people? It is like cutting of your essence, your own being. Blood relationships are absolute and eternal. It is like cutting off a part of you. You have to know what responsibility means.

Heaven must be the center, so we have to be connected to the True Family; otherwise what we do has nothing to do with God. So when I study the history of Christianity, I come to ponder on how it is possible that Jesus’ three years of ministry created such a church? It is because it was aligned with the will of God. What is our true faith, what do we really believe in? What is the substantial element of our faith? Do we want to keep the Unification Church as a denomination and separate religion forever, or is it something else? What was the meaning of the Old Testament? The Mosaic Law was set up for Jesus so that he could substantiate the true love, true life and true lineage. Why did the Jews kill Jesus? Do you think that the Israelites were used to what Jesus was saying? Jesus said: "I am not here to go against the Mosaic Law, I am the fulfillment of that law." Jesus answered this in response to the Jews who questioned him. The reason they even asked this is that they thought that Jesus was saying something different.

So too did Christianity, when Father came, ask: "Why are you teaching something different from our theology?" It is because what Father was teaching was the fulfillment of Jesus’ mission. But every step of the way the thing that blocked them was the very faith they had in the old law, and they could not realize that Jesus was the fulfillment of that law, just as the Christians could not realize this about Father. They were too tied to the institutions of Judaism, of Christianity, to realize that God was using these for the Messiah. Is the Unification Church something that needs to last forever, or is it a tool to further God’s providence? The Unification Church was created because the foundation was lost, it was created in order to restore 6000 of history. Do you think that Father’s original mission was to create Unification Church? That God intended for Father to loose the prepared foundation of Christianity? That is why the history of our movement has been restoration through indemnity. Do you think that that was God’s original intention? The incredible thing about our True Parents is that even though the foundation was lost, they were able to overcome death and come as far as they have. Our second generation: the original mission of True Parents was to do what we are now going to do, to establish the Kingdom of God on earth. The settlement age was delayed for 40 years. Principle was the restoration formula. Think about it, had this foundation not been lost, then those born in the 1960s would have been the Christian second generation. Instead Satan used this idealistic generation to legitimize free sex, drug use, homosexuality, etc. They were the Christian second generation born after 1945. Is that not the case? Where did all of these things come from? The democratic Christian nations. This generation should have been God’s generation.

What are the major problems of the world today? Many people are saying: "I wish that the cold war era would come back because it was more predictable." What is the source of all these world problems? Where were the seeds sown? You have to think about that. How many of you come from CIS and newly democratic nations? You should know that the problems that we see now were sown from that generation. And the new democratic nations have the same potential as those Christian nations had after World War II. But instead in the United States, we hear of things that were totally unheard of just a few years ago, of kids going to school and killing their classmates. Totally unheard of!

Why did I call all of you to gather here for a new revival workshop? Why am I trying to educate you on a new paradigm of leadership for the settlement age? We have to be the new second generation. The second generation Christians could not fulfill this mission, of bringing in the true Settlement Age. That means we have to bring in the culture of the Settlement Age. Let me tell you the historic significance of the age we live in. We’ve entered right now the seventh millennium from a providential viewpoint. We’ve entered the third millennium after Christ; we’ve entered the 21st Century. Three is the number of perfection, seven the number of completion. 21 means seven threes. This age numerically suggests a new era, the fulfillment of God’s providence. Especially the work that I’m initiating right now, I don’t see it as a distinct or separate mission, but a continuation of the work of God and my parents. That’s why last year I prepared the groundwork for which you can receive this message today.

What was the theme of my tour lasts year? "Inheritance and Development". Settlement age is where the family is the central model. Therefore the historical differences and difficulties between the generations should be resolved. I opened up the idea that the first generation, that you too can come to the land of Canaan. Why did I do that tour? If I did not prepare that tour, you would not be able to receive this message today. This message signifies the role and responsibility of the second generation today. Whatever standpoint you want me to explain it from I can do that. But more than the explanation, you yourself have to become the owner: An owner of God’s providence, as a blessed family. I want you to realize that today, since I’m only going to be here for three more days.

We also need a pledge to fulfill our responsibility. Are we going to win or are we going to lose? Originally I wanted to make this workshop much more difficult. What would have happened if I had been here the whole time? Probably I would have made the workshop much harder. Maybe half the people here would be in crutches, and maybe half of the sisters would even have passed away, if I stayed here for the full 21 days. You’d probably ask me to leave.

Originally I was thinking about taking all of you to Alaska for training there. In Alaska there are no roads, no lights, no food. In fact, you are the food. A bear might just eat you! The fact that you can be dead makes it so much fun. Do you want to do it? What’s more important to me is not physical stamina but rather internal strength. I don’t know if you know about the story of a workshop I had for some 20-year old Blessed Children in Alaska. Because they’re just 20 years old, think how fit they are! Jin Man Kwak, Young Jun Kim and I were the chaperones. So, I created a very very difficult schedule. Of course they had a very very difficult time. You had some special challenge days here too, right? One of the things they had to do for a special project was the following. I broke them up into teams of four and I gave them one bottle of water and three sandwiches. I gave them all fishing poles and one rifle, a map and a compass. And I told them that there’s a stream maybe three miles past that mountain, a salmon stream. I said: "I want you each to catch two fish. And I want you to bring them back. Catch two fish and come back before nine o’clock."

Actually, this was a workshop where the Korean team did really well. Why do I say they did very well? Because they got lost! There were a total of five teams. One Korean team, one Japanese team and three American teams. This is why this time at this workshop I mixed the teams. Because I realized once again how the unique characters that each nationality have matter for the teams.

Anyway, the American team went over the first mountain, and realized that there was no trail. So after the first mountain, they decided to come back. So, one of the American teams came back. I was watching them with binoculars. I saw another team coming back on the ridge, and I was wondering which team it would be. When they came back I realized it was the Japanese team. Finally, the only ones that weren’t back was the Korean team. The American team wanted to raid the fridge and eat before all the teams were back. And I said no. You do Hoon Dok Hae until they come back. And they did Hoon Dok Hae until three o’clock in the morning, but the Korean team still had not returned. So now I was getting a bit worried. I took a flashlight and a gun and I went to the top of the mountain. And I was yelling: "Yo! Where are you guys?" I even shot my gun a few times in the air. But there was no reply.

Luckily we were on an island. I purposely chose an island so there’s no possibility that they would be really lost. There was nowhere to be except on the island. So I decided to come back and take a boat and go in a circle around the whole island in order to find them, since we thought that they might be camping on the beach. We went around the island first light the next day. But we didn’t find anybody. I was like "Oh, oh." So we eventually had to call the coast guard. Eventually we found them. The coast guard found them and picked them up by helicopter. They were all the way on the far tip of the island. So when they came back, I asked them: "Where did you go? The river was right in the middle of the Island, how comes you guys went so far?" They told me that when they came to the river, they fished, but they didn’t catch any, so they went further to find another river, because of the direction to bring back two fish. But then when they reached the end of the island they became so tired with only three sandwiches and one bottle of water that they couldn’t continue and just slept. Then I asked why didn’t you come back the next day? They said they had tried, but were too tired, so they just couldn’t move. That was when the coastguard found them.

The reason why I tell this story is: I don’t care if you fall flat on your face but I want you to get up and keep going. That ‘s the kind of conviction that I want to see. With that kind of dedication nothing is impossible.

Strangely enough, the captain of that team ended up becoming my nephew in law. He married Shin Mi.

Let’s do three cheers of Mansei.
